Re: Avatar Battle Royale Discussion Thread XIII, No Plot for YOU!
Since we are talking about education systems, I thought I could complicate matters and add in the dutch education system!
Begin elementary school at age 4.
- Elementary school lasts for 8 years/grades. We call it "basisschool"; translation is "basic school".
Begin middle/high school at age 12. We call it "voortgezet onderwijs" or "middelbare school"; literally "continued education"/"middle school". The first year is referred to as the first grade, second year as second grade, etc. (First grade is also referred as the "brugklas", translation: "bridge class", due to its bridging function between elementary school and secondary education.)
There are three different trajects of which you only follow one within middle/high school:
- vmbo, lasts 4 years/grades. Called "voorbereidend middelbaar beroepsonderwijs"; translation is "preparatory middle-level vocational education".
- havo, lasts 5 years/grades. Called "hoger algemeen voortgezet onderwijs"; literally, "higher general continued education".
- vwo, lasts 6 years/grades. Called "voorbereidend wetenschappelijk onderwijs"; literally, "preparatory scientific education".
Begin tertiary education at age 16-18.
There are three different trajects again, usually following up from the previous trajects. These are not compulsory. You can continue to study advanced trajects, but after any traject you can go on the job market.
- mbo, Called "middelbaar beroepsonderwijs"; which literally means, "middle-level vocational education". Lasts 3-4 years. Many people with a vmbo-diploma go to mbo.
- hbo, called "Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs"; or in english "higher professional education". Usually lasts 4 years, leads to Bachelor's Degree. Needs havo, vwo or mbo.
- wo, only taught at the university. Stands for "wetenschappelijk onderwijs"; literally "scientific education". Lasts 3 years for Bachelor's Degree and an additional 1-2 years for Master's Degree. Needs vwo or hbo. With a Bachelor's Degree from hbo you can study for a Master's Degree at the university.
Where I am? With 22 years, I am an early student at the end of the list; I finished University (3/4th of a year early) and will receive my Master's Degree mid-december. I studied Artificial Intelligence and my Master is a 2-year master. Now the job searching has started..
I do not really feel like going for a PhD/doctor's, which is a possibility after a Master's Degree. Going doctor/making your PhD usually takes 4 years.

Well, let's try to make you feel awkward by trying to figure out your name, address, interests, hobbies, and everything about you over the internet. Then we can meet in real life and.... Yeah. Not really.
So you're Tom S, 16, who lives in England...

Re: Avatar Battle Royale Discussion Thread XIII, No Plot for YOU!
Lol, it looks sweet!
As for public schools being crap, the kids in my high school can, and usually do, graduate with at least four college credits, where a credit is the equivalent of doing a semester of college. Not that all the colleges accept this, but it gives you an idea of the kinds of classes I can take (and am taking).

NOOOOO!
I've been ruined!
@Mem: Lucky you. At least you don't live near Detroit... That place is the epitome of 'screw school, I'm gonna get a hydraulic car'. Luckily, I don't live in Detroit, only near it. Just driving through there makes me feel like I'm gonna get shot... Through the windshield of the car. I'd love to see the average person in my neighborhood decently smart. I only know one kid in a 1-mile radius who actually tries to learn.
My Kindergarten (I went to a public school for one year) teacher thought I was special and hated learning because I already knew how to count, and the other kids were struggling with it. Hell, I knew how to do four to the fifth power, given twenty seconds to think about it.
Basically, we would get simple projects. I would finish mine in thirty seconds tops, and it would be one of the best. Rather than looking at the work, however, my teacher looked at the amount of time put into the work over the quality. It sucked.
Because I made the switch to private schools, I'm six semesters ahead of where I would have been math-wise, and four semesters ahead in every other subject.
Don't ever move to or near Detroit.

I've only implied that it isn't. :smalltongue:

Rand: I know, I'm just lazy.

Re: Avatar Battle Royale Discussion Thread XIII, No Plot for YOU!
Alright, we'll just have to eliminate any Tom Shaers we find to be sure.

Re: Avatar Battle Royale Discussion Thread XIII, No Plot for YOU!
@Tnd; Yeah, but this kind of thing lead to the fact of "If you have a 3.7 GPA (out of 4.0), then you are in the lower half the class" :smallannoyed:. My class size is about 550; that means there's about 550 people in my age group at school.

On a completely unrelated topic, I've finaly learnt the main riff to this song, which is supposed to be played on a Hurdy Gurdy, but I do it on guitar. :smalltongue:

Re: Avatar Battle Royale Discussion Thread XIII, No Plot for YOU!
I think it's from FFTA2. That's where I've seen the name "Hurdy-Gurdy" before.
-
Re: Avatar Battle Royale Discussion Thread XIII, No Plot for YOU!
The Hurdy-Gurdy is a mechanical violin, where instead of a bow a crank moves a wheel over the strings and keys are used to hold down strings.

Well, considering I can't read music...
What does it sound like?
Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me.

Re: Avatar Battle Royale Discussion Thread XIII, No Plot for YOU!
Well, as all the strings are played at once, it has been compared to the bagpipes.:smalltongue:
