I am fairly confident that your issue is the norm and not an exception. From my tech support days, it seems even the same spec of ram isn't the same if their ages are more than 6 months apart. Fickle things that they are. Guh. I always recommend just replace it all at once. :/

Phone call at half-one in the morning to say that Bampy's getting worse. Mum and my sister are heading out to see...
I... figure I ought to go to, even... if... else I might regret it. I... might regret it anyway, but...

Yeah, go see him. Better to go through it then to years later constantly think about what could have been and regret it.

Re: My Little Pony LXXXI: All Of These Ponies Are Crazy!
By the time we arrived, but half-an-hour after my sister getting the phone call, Bampy had already passed.
Mum and my sister had been to see him just this afternoon, and he'd had a look at photos of all the family; he'd asked after everyone, and he knew that Mum had been going to bring Nanny to see him tomorrow and that all was well. He'd spent some time looking at photo of me and my sisters as children in particular. We think he decided somewhere that it was time to go. They went to tell Nanny in person (and to bring her so she could see him) - bless her, I think she's handling it better than the rest of us: that war-time spirit, I think, personally.
I stood vigil, the last duty of the Necromancer to family, friend and ally, to stand watch over the body as the soul goes on.
He was not alone at the end, at least; the nurses were with him, he was well cared-for. He looked peaceful in repose... but to my eyeglows, so very fragile and... worn, a far cry from the round-faced jolly man I knew as a child.
It caught us all a bit by surprise - we knew it was invetiable and sooner rather than later, but none of us (us or the nursing staff) had expected it to be quite so soon. But at least he managed a reasonable quality of life until really the last year (Mum took him and Nanny out to dinner every Thursday until then), and we made an extra-special effort at Christmas and Easter (whe my uncle and his family came up from Austraila).
Like all of these things, you know it is coming, and it some ways the waiting is bad but the actual event is worse... But then you rally around and get on with dealing with the aftermath, which is some ways is a little relief; the worst has happened, and now you can get on with dealing with it, rather than the uncertainty. (It's very British - and very much a facet of the extended Handley/Dowding clan come to that.)
So. Now meditation, as it is half-past four in the morning, though I almost dread the dreams that will no doubt come; but we shall see what the morning brings.
Hopefully a plethora of Hilarious Pony Fanfiction, but one doesn't keep one's hope up much in the current pony drought...
Ah, you must be feeling slightly better, your natural cynicism is re-establishing itself.
Indeed. Sometimes one does need to vent, to order one's thoughts a little more. Now... to meditate, perchance to regain mana.
Actually, no, first, I'm gonna finish that story I was reading before this started off, where Blueblood is making an idiot of himself trying to woo the Mane Six to get married so he doesn't have to be cut out of his family money or something; because Blueblood suffering always cheers me up.
What? I am still Evil...

I just want to say that it's good to hear that he was still so intact at the end, that he was able to ask after everyone and look at photos. I'm not sure there's anything more brutal than watching someone slip away a little further mentally, day by day and month by month. To talk to them and see that they recognise that what's happening. To see that panic, or worse that gratitude when you can reassure them for a moment.
I never viewed the body, but I knew how much he'd wasted away by that point, I'd been helping him get around the house and so on for a long time. I'd held him that night when we were waiting for ambulance and he was struggling to breathe and I'll never forget the look of panic on his face and how he grabbed at my hand, how I had to keep him from removing the device from his finger as they took his pulse. I squeezed back and I smiled for him to let him know it'd be okay. That was a chest infection too, but we were lucky enough to have something like another six to eight months with him. But he was just so weak by then. He'd been so strong when I was a boy. Even when he got old, he'd still been the one to carry concrete fence posts around the garden on his own while my stepdad and me managed one between us.
Your Bampy was sound in his own mind, he knew his family was nearby and that they were going to be okay and he was calm and at peace with it.
That's a pretty good way to go, really.

We do count our blessing in that both my grandfathers went with their faculties intact. My other grandfather's lady friend deteroirated mentally when she had to go into a home. When my parents last visited her, she didn't really remember them (despite her being effectively a second grandmother after my paternal grandfather died when I was about three), though she recognised herself in the pictures of my sister's wedding they took to show her. It is a grim thing to witness, and you have clearly has to deal wit it much closer than I have - so my condolences to you for that.

He would appreciate that, I think. He liked a bit of brandy or whiskey, right until then end. Mum had taken to filling a little bottle (one of those mini-whiskey bottles) and pouring him a little tumbler when she went.

My condolences. My own grandfather passed recently, and the circumstances of his death were much less pleasant. He died alone after suffering from severe Alzheimer's and having the love of his life divorce him after over 50 years of happy marriage. I wasn't allowed to go to the funeral. As far as deaths go, your Bampy had a good one.
The prospect of turning one year older today suddenly doesn't feel anywhere near as happy as it used to.
Having said birthday in August when nearly everyone I know is out of town doesn't help matters.
