Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
I knew Nimmel had to be writing letters to some Deegan or Deegan to-be - thank Luana it's Miranda.
I love Dominion's newspapers. Are these all different papers from the same day? Half of Callan must consist of undercover reporters, given I don't think we've seen any journalists except for Buzz Beardman, who shouldn't really count.
Judging by the masthead, Miranda's favourite paper appears to be The Daily Blank. On the last page there's a large photo of the founder and chief editor, Sir Reginald Blank the Strangely Invisible.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
To be honest, that pen holding is not THAT terrible. Tried to do a sketch with something approximating that hand position (with a fountain pain) and managed a tolerable result of Nimmel-face. Not my cup of tea but can be done.
Panel 3 arm on the other hand...

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
Really? I tried it myself, and found that my wrist was left in a really akward position. :smallconfused:

Can be done =/= can be comfortably done, I say. :smalltongue:
But seriously, beyond the eldritch horror that is Nimmel's hand, there's not much to comment on that isn't standard for DD. Other than that "dogpile" is a really awkward pun in this case.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
Oh sure, you can hold a pen like that to write/draw. But who actually does it naturally if they aren't missing their two last fingers? Mookie?
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
Well I got much better results using the Mookie-hand than a left hand and I'm relatively ambidextrous
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
... I just did a Google Image search to find Mookie drawing something.
The results are pretty weird.:smallconfused:

Maybe he holds his pen with his foot. Or his tongue. Would make sense.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
Maybe pen holding is like karate kid... you have to write a certain way as training for magic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1oMC...eature=related

What.
Maybe if Mookie established as such, but he hasn't. So unless he says so at a later date, we can add holding a pen to Mookie's Doesn't Know How to Draw list.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
What is the most likely, given the track record of our dear Mookie:
- He has come up with a halfway cool and relatively original tidbit about how nerdery magic is learned and practiced, and hasn't introduced it yet despite a main cast made of 80% spellcasters;
- He doesn't bother drawing anything that makes sense anatomically speaking.

It's a photo of PrezCallan.

It looks like Mookie's evolved from making fun of jocks to making fun of frat boys. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Wait, is that College or High School? :smallconfused:

College. With a bunch of boisterous, exhibitionist werewolves.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
It's good to see members of the culturally superior werewolf race preparing to maul an outsider for being different.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
(1) I guess Mookie really does write like Nimmel :smalleek:
(2) Didn't all of the Orcs already return to Maltak?

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
Can we nickname this arc 'Teen Wolf' or a variation thereof?

Does it count when everyone BUT the teen is a werewolf?
Mookie might end up stuffing Nimmel in a fursuit.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
Er... I hold my pen that way. I mean, it's between the middle and ring fingers, rather than middle and index, but it's the same idea.
Anyways, right now I'm holding out hope that this isn't yet another act of doubleplusungood racism, but rather Nimmel's overly excitable werewolf roomie having some good old-fashioned werewolf fun. Of course, he's forgotten that Nimmel is a weak human who will messily expire in short order, but that's to be expected in these circumstances.
...I also like how Mookie juxtaposes the headlines about The Magic Fading with Miranda casually receiving a magic teleport-gram. It's as if he's outright stating, "Yeah, these people are First Caste. They're just a million times more awesome than all those other lousy losers."

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
Why the hell is Nimmel even in werewolf school? What can they teach him that Callan can't?
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
It kind of looks like the headlines are meant to be racist and unfair - the Eeebil Callanians are blaming the poor orcs - but I may be simply biased.

Because Nimmel is a heavy ice mage, and the Coldfire Academy's specialty is ice magic.
Kind of akin to the difference between getting a MD from Baylor, and a MD from, say, Florida State University.

And it makes sense when you think about it. It's kinda like in the real world, the best refrigeration engineers all come from Norway and Nunavut, whereas the leading oven brands originate from the Réunion.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
Faugh. The best icebreaker ships come from Finland, as do a lot of good skiers, and I'm willing to bet that the country has a better grip on insulation and central heating than most. The usual fantasy magic is a versatile tool for manipulating the environment, so I'm willing to grant strengths and specialization that depend on that environment.
Mind you, I still have to write that ice age fantasy story that shows how those differences developed, as well as using magic for hunting rabbits.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, MK XXI - Death is not Zombies
Yeah, as much as Mookie's stuff is usually crummy, this is more like going to Berkley to learn to be a nuclear engineer instead of just going to a more generic engeneering school that doesn't have a nuclear reactor onsite.
