Stefan and Talsarios sling stones down the hall but both careen off the stone walls. Jeanne's arrow fares no better.
Nathros sets his spear against the charging bugbear, but the beast pulls up to swing his sword and avoids the dwarven spear. Brandon cuts a great gash across the beast's chest.
The beast, up close apparently a furry goblin standing almost eight feet tall, staggers back a step but lashes out with his own sword and puts a serious dent in Brandon's fine armor.

Lead Bugbear Seriously wounded
Bugbear #2 uninjured
Currently, Lead Bugbear mostly blocks up the doorway and his fellow is trapped behind him. Brandon and Nathros stand toe-to-toe with the lead fellow. Attacks through them by others seem unwise, though I haven't looked up the exact rules on that yet.
PCs win Initiative.
Nathros draws his sword and drives into the fray.

Brandon cries out, "Aagh!" as the bugbear's weapon dents his armor. He's sure he's dead - again!
But then he looks down and he's not bleeding. Angry at his own fear, he grits his teeth and shouts, "Die, you filthy huge gobbo!" and tries to cut the bugbear again with his sword.

The young Thyatian scholar bobs about, looking for an opening to sling another bullet. Frustrated, but choosing his words for complexity - and hopefully incomprehensibility to the primitive goblinoid intellect - Talsarios calls out:
"Feign fatigue and withdraw - they are only encirclable if they are exposed!"
Edit: moved formatted rolls to new post.
SpoilerTalsarios, MU 1, HP 1 (max), AC 9, THAC0 19
Only when there is a clear opening will Talsarios sling his bullet. Here are the rolls for if/when that happens.

Brandon and Nathros both lay into the bugbear, and Brandon's blade finds flesh again. The beast is gravely wounded. He swings his own blade feebly and tries to back up, running into his fellow.
The two manage to exchange places, squeezing past each other in the hallway.
Spoiler
No clear firing line appears for Tal, Jeanne, or Stefan.
Leader Bugbear - critically wounded, retreating down the hall
Bugbear Two - uninjured, now blocking the doorway
Foes win initiative and use it to reposition themselves.
PCs turn.
Nathros presses the attack against the new assailant.

Brandon Bor
Sweat appears on Brandon's forehead as the new and unwounded bugbear comes up to kill them, starting with him and Nathros. Fear clutches at his belly.
He wants very much to retreat and give the job of killing this monster to someone else, but he's been having luck so far and he doesn't want to give the job entirely to Nathros either. So he presses the attack, swinging his sword even as he incoherently shouts, "Gobbo, gobbo, gobbo! Die, you big fat turkey!"

SpoilerTalsarios continues to watch and wait for an opening to attack.
The bugbear shies away from Nathros's attack but right into Brandon's. Brandon opens the the chest of the second bugbear in much the same fashion as the first, and its guts begin to pour out of the wound. He begins to retreat after his fellow.
Both bugbears back away from the doorway and try to clamber over the remaining debris.

Exultation burns through his veins as the badly bleeding bugbears retreat. Brandon shouts, "Get 'em!"
He puts down his sword, draws a dagger (one of three acquired from dead goblins the other day) and throws it at the other bugbear.

Not sure if Strength bonus applies to a thrown dagger, so I've left it off the roll. Please apply it if the bonus does apply.

Brandon curses as his throw goes wild. Belatedly, he remembers that he has companions who are much more competent with missile weapons than he is. He curses again.
As soon as the gap opens between the bugbears and his fighting friends, Talsarios lets fly his sling bullet.
Nathros runs down the fleeing bugbears and cuts one down as he tries to step onto the junk pile. The large goblinoid crashes to the ground in a heap, blood spilling profusely over the remaining trash in the hall. Brandon's dagger falls short and into the wreckage and Talsarios' shot careens harmlessly off the bugbear's furry hide.
Jeanne and Stefan stand back from the entrance, waiting for a shot to clear, and the woodsmen watch anxiously.
Nathros gives chase to the remaining bugbear, though not so far as to pass beyond any doors!

SpoilerI'm assuming here that the last bugbear can be attacked via missile weapons if Brandon just gets out of the way. Someone please tell me if this is incorrect.
Brandon ducks down by kneeling and crouching, yelling, "Shoot it! Fill 'im fulla arrows!"
While he is down there, he retrieves his sword.
Stefan takes a shot at the bugbear if he's reasonably certain he won't hit Nathros or Brandon.

"Good work, Brandon! Don't go too far, Nathros!" he calls as he regains his breath.
Nathros clambers after the bugbear as his allies fire missile weapons over and around the dwarf.
Stefan lands a perfect blow and the bugbear stumbles forward and crashed to the stone floor.
SpoilerOut of combat
"We've got to be thinning their numbers. Let's press forward before more come snooping around."
"Agreed. Let us investigate the chamber they came from."
Nathros was most of the way there already and could see the door ahead, once closed and locked, now hung wide open. The large room beyond, or what could be seen of it it from the hall was empty. The smell of smoke still hung in the air, but none clouded the vision.
Brandon Bor
As the battle ends, Brandon breaks out in a cold sweat. His voice a little weak and sounding distracted, he directs the workmen to continue dismantling the barricade.
Then he turns to Talsarios and Jeanne and yells, "Why didn't you c-cast at them? Didn't you see how BIG they were? They coulda killed us!"
He sounds quite angry and upset, but a strong undercurrent of fear makes his voice break a few times.
"It was just pure dumb luck that we got them this time! If they were anywhere near as good as the goblin sergeant, we'd be dead-dead-dead!"
Then he starts to search the bodies, handing the bugbears' weapons to the hirelings to carry them and keeping the coins and other valuables himself, but only after showing all the items to his party-mates.
SpoilerHow much treasure did they carry, hmm? I hope more than the goblins did. Or maybe each of the goblins actually had more.
Each bugbear carries a sword and has a dirty golden clasp on their grimy shirt.
Stefan kneels down to steady himself. "Wow, those were some huge goblins! What did you call them, Tal? Antbears?"
"My guess is those guys were just a part of some honour-guard to this king. Who knows, maybe the king himself is an antbear!"
Stefan wipes his brow, then stands up. "Oh, is everyone ok?" He notices the huge dent in Brandon's armor and rushes over to help.
"It's a good thing you're built so solidly, Bran. Otherwise those things woulda had us for dinner."
He attempts to administer healing on Brandon's wounds.
