I found a hero, Sniper, I can get into the play style of and been working getting better of. I like being ranged, I like being able to use assassinate and take off a big chunk of hp in one hit. It works. "Ha! You are running away? Take THIS!"
To the bots cheating: I know and thats why I like playing against them, if I can get the upper hand on some cheating bots, then I shouldn't have a big issue to facing humans.
This is also why I normally do the SP first on games and then break into MP, if I can handle the SP on the hardest difficulties, then surely I can be at least somewhat productive on a team.
Not true at all. The bots cheating in no way make up for how crappy they are. If you have the basics of the game, start playing against humans. Bots build false confidence. The mentality of DotA should never be confidence that you can handle your own and do well, it should be that fear that no matter what you do, where you are, or who you are playing, those 5 people on the other team are infinitely better and will kill you. Repeatedly, and will make fun of you for it.
Plus you learn so much more playing with people. With bots it never changes; warding spots, pushing, juking, item builds, and skill usage. No matter how many times you play it the bots will do as they are programmed. With people though? One game you see the slark go basher/Diffusal/vlads and ganked non-stop starting level six(And this guy? He knew every tree position in the game just watching him you picked up a few 'oh man! run! tactics), the next you see go Skadi/AC. He farmed in a lane for 30 mins. The third one? He went vangaurd/Heart/radience and you have no freaking idea how because you never saw him on the map, but he did it. So now you can say 'Oh, I liked the basher. Ima make that when I play him, but the diffusal didn't seem necessary since you had it, i'd rather forgo that. Maybe pick up that Hyperstone for a much later AC? And then work on heart, because that dude was unkilliable.' Bam. So much learned that would have been forgone playing bots. Plus you have 8 other people doing their own thing, it all adds up.
Any tips for a new Dota 2 player?
Always know where your towel is. Also known as: DON'T PANIC :P
Here is something I found quite informative for someone that is green:
PC Gamer 2 hour guide to playing any hero
Also, welcome to Dota, you suck.
MOBAs generate bad feelings because of the way numbers, teamplay, and win mechanics interact, in my opinion. That is to say, if there's a really crappy player on our team in TF2, then we just don't benefit very much from him. If our sniper doesn't sniper as many enemies as he might, then I just have more enemies at higher HPs then they would be if he'd shot them. As often as not, it won't make a difference to my gameplay experience.
But in Dota/LoL, if that sniper messes up, the other team gets kills, and now they're bigger. A fed character is much harder to kill than a normal one. A bad TF2 medic doesn't heal. A bad LoL medic overheals the other team.
As such, as the other team becomes more and more numerically entrenched in victory, turnarounds become increasingly impossible, but the game doesn't actually end for another 20 minutes, giving you 20 minutes to silently despise your former friends.
At least comebacks are possible in Dota due to how items scale. In LoL, the better the item, the more cost effective it is. In Dota, good items are often overpriced compared to lower tier items with comparable stats (though they have other advantages, like active abilities or requiring less slots to equip; sure you can buy three iron branches that basically give you +3 to all stats as opposed to buying an item with almost the same gold amount that only gives you +3 to one stat, but it is only one slot as opposed to three).
But then again, you often just upgrade these items, going from say boots of speed to power threads, making slots a lot less limiting. In my experience, slots matter only in middle game, in early you're too poor to buy 6 items, in late you upgrade only anyway.
Although got hit by irritating limit in Secret Shop once and had to return to base to drop one item to stash to actually get what I bought, but I don't remember what combination caused that >_<
So Steam Fall sale and such, pretty cool, deals and all that.
Also my school, Digipen, will be hosting a LAN thing and I might be supposed to help with a TF2 tournament, I was wondering if people knew of sites that might help with this, ie whitelist, configs, stuff like that.
So, I currently have an extra copy of Civilization V which I had for a friend, but he no longer wants it. I'm happy to swap it for something of a similar value (and something I'd like) if anyone has extra copies of things floating around.
Perhaps something involving the expansion, Gods and Kings, if you have a spare copy of the expansion floating around and want a copy of the game for a friend. If you need to purchase it, it's currently on sale for 50% off, but I'm happy to wait until it drops further. Feel free to PM me.
On a similar note, I'd like to pick up Sonic Adventure 2 (what can I say? Nostalgia). Unfortunately, it's region-locked. Also, I'm kind of broke as far as Steam is concerned, though that may change soon.
Any chance of a trade for Thief 2 (which I have) or something of similar value? In the latter case, I'll pick it up within the next couple of days.
Edit: Never mind. Thanks, Memnarch!
Just snagged all the Crusader Kings II DLC. :smalltongue:
Damn you, Steam Sales! I've just got £60+ of games for £30 but I just don't have the time to play them!
(maybe I could quit working... or sleeping)
Is anyone following the Saxxy Awards thing? If so, I have a few recommendations:
Spy and Engineer: The Musical (comedy)
The Wishmaker (comedy)
Bad Medicine (drama)
You Had One Job, Soldier (comedy)
Till Death Do Us Part (drama)
Would somebody be able to send me an invite to the GiTP group on steam? Name is Elm11.
Cheers.
Scrubbed out of decency.
Borderlands 2 on sale. Would anyone be interested in the 4-pack?
The Saxxys have some crazy good entries this year. Skipping ones that have already been posted, ones I especially like for the funny are
TeamFormers 2
Going to Space
and Mmph the Way You Mmph
For random badassness, there was
Midnight Power
And much as I was impressed by Death Do Us Part, I'm betting on
Story of a Sentry to take the drama category. Note: try not to cry too much at the end.
The Hairy Modfather: If you're going to exchange/trade/swap games through this forum, keep it to using the Steam trading system only. Do not advertise to sell/trade/buy any goods using real money or keys.
Indeed. The initial skepticism left pretty quickly.
Ahh, I've had Mmph the Way You Mmph on my iTunes for a year now and was pleasantly surprised to see it in film form.
Good stuff there, but I really want "Spy and Engineer" to win comedy, because singing. The animation and story in "Bad Medicine" and "Story of a Sentry" are great, so I hope the winner's one of the two.
