Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I don't think there's any era of music that's inherently better or worse. No matter when you slice it, there has always been some interesting things being done, and there has always been some absolute crap. That said, I have more of a taste/tolerance for some bad 80s music, because that's what I heard growing up.
The music I like (not necessarily the music I think is good) tends to run towards the weird end of things anyway, so take that for what it's worth.

Well that's no fun.

Agreed, although I'll make a comparison just for fun.
10's=00's=90's=80's=70's=60's=50's=20's=(19)10's and before>40's>30's

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Woot! Just released the music video I directed that I was talking about earlier in the thread. While it's my 2nd official music video, it's the first with kind of a "big" production, even if the budget was next to nothing. I'm very pleased with how it came out, and I think it will have broader appeal than just the local market. And how can you go wrong with people running around the woods in animal masks?
Calling Out by Musical Charis and Autumn Sky

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I dunno, I never thought 80s music was all that bad. Probably also because I heard it growing up, but those synths never bothered me. In fact, coupla my favourite goth rock bands are solidly cemented in the 80s.

I'm High....
...on Fire that is.
Although De Vermis Mysteriis is probably a bad album to write a paper to.
EDIT: And I'm just not going to do any work while I listen to Old Ideas by Leonard Cohen.

+1 :smallcool:
Hrm... I actually should listen to those guys again.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Oh my god, Come Healing is such a beautiful song. Leonard Cohen's voice may not be great, but he more than compensates for that, and it actually feels perfect in this song.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Just saw this thread, and it seems pretty neat. I am not aware if anybody has mentioned it yet, but has anybody heard of Electro-swing?
For those who do not know, I have several links handy:
Perov Stelar - Catgroove
Caravan Palace - Clash
Enjoy! :smallwink:

Lies and slander. Leonard Cohen's voice is amazing. It feels like sandpaper scrubbing at your soul.
In fact, his voice is almost as good as Carl McCoy's.

Obviously Tom Waits' voice is best.

Him, and Warren Zevon is also up there, certainly.
But I still prefer Carl McCoy.

I didn't hear about this genre before, but if they did play such a music more often, I might finally be able to dance a proper (if quite fast) quickstep - especially to the second track. :smalltongue:
It's somewhat different, but it does remind me of Mop Mop.
Anyway, I had some interesting finds sitting there for a while:
1. Iron & Wine - it's a musical equivalent of whispering. They might not have the technical mastery of Simon & Garfunkel, but they do understand that sometimes less is more (plus the whole 2 guitars & 2 voices thing).
2. An old danish documentary about british folk music, which shows among other people the founders of Pentangle before they created the band.
3. A very positive song by Storm, if a bit unusual. Be warned though: it's a bit of a earworm and the lyrics might be difficult to explain, if one was to say them aloud in a public place.
4. Sigur Ros - I'm not even sure, what to say about them. Just give them a chance.
edit: plural form used, where plural form is due.

They're a group. Unless you meant lead singer Jonsi. But Jonsi's solo work if fairly mediocre if you ask me.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Hah, I was playing Sigur Ros to a few friends and they kept referring to them as a him too. Got real into them too, one of them is seeing them at bonnarroo so.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Finally listened to the new How to Destroy Angels. It was ok.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Don't know how wide spread he is/was but I just found Dr. Steel and am pretty impressed.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I've just been told the style of bassline I prefer is apparently very easy to play. It always sounded minimal but I couldn't tell for sure. Hmm... Maybe I should start learning again. The plan is to join a krautrock/post-punk group. Or at the very least a group with those influences. Joy Division and PiL, I'm told, aren't exactly difficult to play.

Welcome to the club! Or, er, Toy Army. Dr. Steel is very good (though sadly retired now). Here's more proof.

Ya, I did some poking around and saw that he'd stopped. Shame really but it happens. Steam Powered Giraffe, The Cog is Dead and Abney Park are pretty good as well in the Steam Punk genre of music.

You definitely should! Playing music is fantastic! You probably could pick up that style bass pretty quickly...I started out learning Joy Division and Cure songs myself. Lots of fun to play!
Just finished a trailer for the last film I scored. Trailer music isn't my strength, but I'm pretty pleased with how this came out.

Yeah. Their first EP is the best one so far, I think.
Although now that Nine Inch Nails are starting up again (or something?) I wonder how much time will be spent on How to Destroy Angels. I hope enough. I really like Maandig's voice.

Huzzah! My pop project is picking up steam. It might actually happen. It's been promoted from a "definitely not" to a "probably not". We have introduced some new blood to the project and it's opened up the possibilities.

To be fair, Faith No More is better than a lot of things. :smallamused:
I can't say I'm all that familiar with the Deftones, actually, so I'll take a listen here in bit.
