I'd say "Sorry, man, you are too old to be useful, now get lost" is an insult to pretty much anyone, no?
That, and the fact that it's an insult to anyone takes the oath of Kingsguard. By letting him retire (from a position that's for life) and giving him land (which they can't do as members of the Kingsguard) you're sending the message that it's fine for him to break his oath because his oath doesn't matter.
So it's really less a message of "reward for service" and more a message of "you are now useless to me".
Finishing up A Feast For Crows now and eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series. Personally, I'm rooting for Daenerys to wipe all of the remaining factions off of the face of Westeros. Go House Targaryen!
Yo hey all my post is about my theory on what the series is about wrapped in spoilers naturally.
SpoilerThe series is about the rise of the White Walkers as a threat and the Rise of the Dragons again to fight them (Song of Ice and Fire part). The other cool parts are that i reckon Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targaeryan and Lyanna Stark and he will Marry/Join with Daenarys to fight the White Walkers.. This is all after the south has been dealt with by whatever means.
Anyone know any places on the web I can watch the episodes for free legally? A friend of mind recommended I check this out and he said I'd like it.
I know HBO has a service called HBO Go or something like that and if you have the channel, you can watch it on that.
If you don't get HBO though, you're probably going to have to find it through not necessarily legal means that cannot be discussed here.
Yeah HBO makes all their money off subscription fees, not advertising. They aren't going to put original content out online for free. My best advice is find a friend who has HBO and see if you can watch it at their place. Assuming you're not the sort who gets uncomfortable watching naked women on screen around friends, cause if you are, then that may be a bad idea.
Hah, that would be a little confusing, wouldn't it. Unfortunately I don't think there's really a better acronym, so we'll just have to hope we know when we're talking about GoT and when we're talking about the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth. :smalltongue:
The NerfNow Game of Thrones minicomics are great.

SpoilerWay too tidy for this series, but I agree about Jon's parentage, and that he'll probably team up with Daenerys at some point.
It recently occurred to me that the person to find out about Jon's parentage will probably be Melisandre. You know, so the whole stone dragon plot will still be running now that Mance Rayder's son is safely out of her reach.
My thoughts on what's going to happen re: the Others-
Spoiler
We know that the Dorne, Victarion, and now the Night's Watch (thanks to Samwell) are all seeking out Daenerys to gain her allegiance. Furthermore, with the discovery that Daenerys should be the true wielder of Lightbringer, it seems almost certain she will join Jon and Stannis at the Wall sooner or later.
My money, personally, is on Tyrion joining up with Daenerys during his flight east. He is a virtual repository of information on the happenings of Westeros, and would serve as a valuable aide and counselor. Furthermore, him joining with Daenerys would also be in accordance with Cersei's prophecy. Tyrion will return to King's Landing with Dany and her army, topple the crazy [expletive deleted] from the throne (she'll never surrender it) and kill her himself.
In short, I think we'll see Dany thrashing the remnants of House Lannister and then leading an alliance against the Others.
Also, on the subject of Lady Catelyn,
Spoiler
I think I hate her even more than Egwene now, and I didn't think that was even possible. God, she is just an absolute moron. Made awful choices in life, terrible counsel for her family, got killed, and now is making even worse choices, and carrying on with murderous bandits. Please, can somebody just put her out of her misery? Beric was way more awesome, can't believe we lost him to get this sorry excuse for a character back.
*Whistles innocently*
*drops link to a cool 8-Bit version of the Game of Thrones theme song*
*Leaves quietly*
Awesome, but one thing bugs me... Why would they use a SNES cartridge (16-bit) for an 8-bit remix?
SpoilerThat seems an overly optimistic view of what's going to happen, remember there are far more peolpe than just the Lannisters who are going to stand in the way of Daenerys' rule. I'll be surprised if Jon survives till the last book. I'd also bet that it's Jaime who kills Cersei and not Tyrion.

SpoilerI take it you're a Brienne fan?
Cat is an interesting character.
SpoilerI think part of it is with the information she has, she generally makes rather well informed decisions. However almost invariably she is not listened too or something she has no means of knowing about makes what she says wrong.
Theon was a terrible choice to go talk to his father, using him will not end well. It didn't.
Claiming King in the North will not end well. See above.
Walder Frey is a piece of **** so we better try and appease him a bit because they need him. Robb was an idiot, plain and simple here.
Tyrion's a Lannister he sees me and will probably report to the Queen about what's happening. Also it was his blade that tried to kill my son. She didn't know Tyrion was framed or her childhood friend could no longer be trusted.
Someone I barely knew is now back her mission incomplete and wearing expensive one of a kind gifts from the enemy, she obviously went turncoat.
Hey Renly, idiot, you're behaving wasteful and could use allies. You up for it? Also you really shouldn't be organizing your army as you're doing, winter is literally coming it's time to gather your resources not throwing tournaments and feasting. Ignored.
Now eventually she does crack, releasing Jaime was stupid. Not as stupid as Robb marrying Jeyne, but it's fairly hard to get that stupid. To match that you would have to tell the evil queen your plans to overthrow her or something.
What Dienekes said.
SpoilerCatelyn gets a bad rap simply because most of what she does ends up badly. But if you actually look at what she does, she only made a few legitimately bad moves, and usually they turn so bad as a result of things happenings she has no control over.
Trusting Littlefinger was an out and out mistake, I won't lie, but it's not a mark of extreme stupidity, it's a mark of thinking someone who once loved you and obviously still does would not lie to you, especially over something this huge. Plus, the Starks are not consummate politicians; Catelyn is no longer used to mistrusting everyone by default, if she ever was to begin with. Life at court seems to be far more treacherous than life elsewhere, a fact she has pretty much no experience with.
Kidnapping Tyrion? Running into the man she thought was her son's attempted murderer AND his retinue while virtually alone and incognito in an inn, she quite likely feared for her own life; if Tyrion had simply had her followed when she left she could have easily been killed by "bandits" on the Kingsroad. She might have been a little hasty, but while we know that Tyrion's a cool guy, she has nothing to go on but his reputation and Littlefinger's word, which don't exactly suggest she'll be safe.
Tyrion's imprisonment without trial or questioning and subsequent trial by combat? How the heck was Catelyn supposed to know that, far from being an ally against the Lannisters, Lysa is playing without a full deck and won't even listen to her sister? The truth might have come out if Catelyn had been allowed to talk with him; she was already considering his defense and how Littlefinger's story actually didn't make much sense. But she wasn't.
Releasing Jaime can pretty much be considered temporary insanity; she did it literally the same day she found out that her sons had been murdered. Again, a bad move, but I can't honestly say I would never do the same thing in her position.
Her counsel on how to deal with Frey was pretty much spot-on; Robb ruined that himself. Even when they went back, Catelyn was quick to advise Robb about protecting himself, and correctly thought that Frey making them leave Grey Wind outside was a bad sign. However, she didn't think that Frey was enough of a treacherous bastard to break guest-right, pretty much one of the most sacred traditions in the kingdom, and get himself and his house branded pretty much forever as treacherous bastards in the eyes of even their allies.
As Stoneheart, there's no temporary about it; she's insane. She went insane before she died, as the text took pains to point out, and rotting in a river for three days before being brought back did not help at all. Lord Beric was cool, yes, but you could see the signs of his wish for death much earlier; he was not going to last long, being brought back so many times. And anyway, you knew that somehow R'hllor would find a way to screw it up. R'hllor is not a good guy; Stoneheart is perfectly suited to the god's absolutist doctrines.
Birgitte's pretty cool, and surprisingly I find Tuon very interesting. And Nynaeve has gotten much better as the books go on, and especially when she was no longer spending so much time with Egwene and Elayne, who have both been gits since around book two. But even they are getting better recently; I only grind my teeth at their stupidity and arrogance once or twice a chapter.
*squints at conversation* Who in the world are you guys talking about? Are these characters from the next book or another series entirely?
Why I hate Cat.
Spoiler"It should have been you."
I don't like that character any more than she did, in fact, I think he's a Mary Sue larva. Even if she was mad with grief, she kinda crosses the MEH there, for me. He was never her enemy, and only wanted her to not be a complete psycho-***** towards him.
SpoilerI mean, another character tried being that mean to all their life, and ended up getting shot in his junk for their trouble.
SpoilerYeah, that's a horrible thing to say... But you try living each day with a constant reminder that your loved one cheated on you. It doesn't forgive her saying that, but it does make why she hates him more understandable.
