Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
Valve, I am dissapointed with you this time. Yes you gave us weapons, and yes you gave up many payload maps, but you know what? No one plays tf2 for those things. WHERE ARE THE HATS VALVE. Tell me, where are the hats!

Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
Instant setup sentries are decent ninjas, but not very good.
Instant setup machine gun nests are aawwwwright. Though not as good as the levelable ones.
And.. Yeah.. Where ARE the hats, Valve?

The Wrangler pretty much allows the Engie to do ranged support fire. Pesky and nigh-unavoidable hitscan dakka. It's effectively a machine gun emplacement that can keep the opposition pinned down. It can also pin Snipers.
There is a bit of drawback though. Wrangler Engies tend to be over-focused and won't react as quickly as the sentry AI to enemies showing up at point-blank. Stab-saps are easier because of the three-second window and the tendency to tunnel-vision.
Still, I forsee problems on some maps since what was once may have been an uncontested Sniper overwatch can be threatened by an Engie spamming dakka into his nest ceaselessly. Doubly-so if a pocket Engie gets involved.
Also, Valve needs to nerf the ability of the Engie to pick-up and move somewhat, since it can be done defensively. Is your level 3 about to die? Did an Uber show up? Pick it up and run away. It can be a very effective way to save the Engie's metal-expensive toy.
Level 3's take longer to re-deploy. Depending on your situation, carrying a level 2 or a level 1 is more effective because they re-deploy more quickly.
You don't necessarily need extra firepower to get the effect you want:
1) You just need the few kills to power up your Frontier Justice when your ninja sentry inevitably dies.
2) You're are using the Wrangler to pressure the other team, while your team is making a push. Again, I cannot overstate the power of ranged hitscan dakka. It is *very* annoying.
Very good assessment. I concur with all of the points listed. Wrangler + Mini-Sentry is brilliant for offensive Engies, good support fire from range and cheap. Set up a dispenser and a Mini-sentry. You won't be disappointed.
Question is, does hiding in the bubble allow you to avoid being sniped? We must test this, FOR SCIENCE.

Good God. Valve, what kind of hatless horror have you unleashed upon the world?

All of which is beside the point.
If the the Gunslinger sentry gun eats some enemy health before it dies, then it has done it's job.
They're basically the zerglings of sentry guns. They're spammable and expendable. And Engies can stay mobile and do a lot harassment without staying invested in a nest or spending a lot of time upgrading sentries at spawn. (But since he has metal to spare, he can still upgrade *your* sentry.)
Comboing it with Wrangler isn't even the worst choice. It can eat about 40 health at long range in about a second. And do it accurately.
My big complaint with the Gunslinger+Wrangler is that it really reams the Pyro. A few seconds under this combo is enough to kill him.

And Lurker, don't forget the unlimited fast-travelling rockets with no falloff and unlimited range and enough damage to one-shot 125 health classes.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
Actually the answer is no, the bubble is for show. You can be sniped through the bubble if the sentry is not in the way.

Aww man... so disappointing.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
I'd like to add that, while many people are focusing on the sentries, and rightly so, I love moving dispensers and teleporters. They never were terribly expensive, but I really like being able to move them around so easily. Stick the exit close up, move it around a little, fall back if you must... I enjoy playing support, and it's fun to be able to keep players coming and ready for combat. Sapping a teleporter gets more difficult when the only one that isn't moving is the one beside spawn.

Can you pick up a building that's being sapped?
-
Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
Yes, and it removes the sapper as well.

I heard it redeploys as a level 1 building.

so engineers can sentry jump now

Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
I am SO glad I'm going away this weekend...TF2 is nothing but a headache for me at the moment.
The Wrangler and moving sentries may well be balanced, but not when each team has 3+ engies moving together.
Also, the fact that the Wrangler has no damage fall-off, can out-snipe a sniper, out-damage a Heavy, out Tank a Heavy/Medic combo, out-rocket a Soldier, AND be healed and reloaded is WAY to powerful.

It does, but it then upgrades itself to 3 without any metal, so it really only adds the time it takes to do the upgrade animations to the normal redeploy time.

I think that's really the part that matters. Every bit of what you said at the bottom is true, but not a huge deal if we were playing normal games. You have one engineer doing this? Two-four people on the other team will take him out. Two engineers? They're going to have to work together, and play smarter. And on any given team, you typically only have one or two. When we have 3+ all running around with sentries and such, like this update, Engineers are a force to reckon. I'm hoping that, with the post-update fall off of Engineers, things won't be such a pain. (The Wrangler is fun, but I already wasted a number of rockets as Soldier against one of those. I don't want to continue to face multiples.)

Yes, this is annoying and makes me want to play anything specifically to kill sentries.
Like Spy...
I don't think I've ever had so many destructions, especially in 10 minutes or so.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
Well, I like all the Engie chaos. I doubt I'm going to get another opportunity to run around Robo-Rengie punching Mini-Sentries and feeling this badass.
What I find absolutely strangest though is the appearance of a Misc 2 slot. What the heck do you do with it?
Oh, and why does the Gunslinger have absolutely no achievements linked to it?
-
Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
I finally managed to break myself away from Just Cause 2 to try out the VS Survival mutation for L4D2 last night and I must say it's quite a blast. It's probably my favorite mutation so far. I'll have to see about getting a mutation selector on the server.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
On a slightly related topic, I need someone who knows how to have demo files export from a third person perspective. We had a tower of taunts before the update. It was awesome.

I guess Valve just thought that due to the fact that the Gunslinger is an honest-to-god power fist, it was enough of a reward in and of itself and didn't need any additional achievements to go along with it.

Okay, how long before someone makes a Luke Skywalker skin for Robo-engie?

Effing Misc 2, how does it work?
Most likely more stuff to do with medals/hats/player props. What ever this means, I want Valve to make it possible to wear the Camera Beard and the medals at the same time.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIII: The World's #1 Forum-Themed Hat Acquisition Simulator
Fun fact: The only Spy achievement I need is Sap Auter for destroying 1000 buildings.
Spy is INCREDIBLE right now.
