I swear I know where those were taken, but I can't be sure. I definitely know the ambience though.
And you most certainly do photograph well in the 2011 picture. Very handsome.
Thank you! Although, of course, these are the best from a selection of a few hundred!
The 05 and 06 pictures were all taken in Cambridge, albeit in different places within it.

Yeah, I prefer the black and white version of that photo (and a couple of others). However, there were some interesting colours going on in that picture which obviously you can't see in the B&W (described by one witness as "our man in Havana", which I'll take, although I'd have thought a linen suit would be more appropriate for that).
For a compare/contrast see these two (both from the stag do for the aforementioned wedding)
And an "album cover" shot from the same trip:

Must have been too subtle to me. Oh well, can't get them all.

True. Black and White does cut out anything interesting involving colours that may be going on.
And in this case, the black and white version here isn't very good.
It looks slight blurry and/or pixellated. (Not to mention that the first one is also at a more aesthetically pleasing angle.)
But the third one is awesome.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) Thread 30: Roman Numerals? What Roman Numerals?
Having finally uploaded all my photos from my trip across Europe onto my computer, I decided to upload a few of them, at least five from each location that I went to. There are of course a few of me, since this is the thread for pictures of Playgrounders.
Ghent:
Brussels:
Edinburgh:
Some Roman ruins and the museum dedicated to Bede
York:
Oxford
Poznan
Gniezno
It was a good trip.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) Thread 30: Roman Numerals? What Roman Numerals?
I shall now commence being incredibly jealous of Dragonprime and his travels through Europe.
Jealousy rudely thrown aside from a moment, those were some interesting musical instruments you saw in Brussels.
And the architecture of all those places is so pretty!
Brisbane was supposedly pretty like that sixty years ago before they relaxed the height restrictions. But now it's less pretty.
Oh well... Still plenty of nice old buildings to look at.
Like the Old Museum Building. (The new museum is hideous.)
Okay, back to jealousy.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) Thread 30: Roman Numerals? What Roman Numerals?
New buildings can be glorious too. And there's nothing so beautiful as a well-built-up downtown skyline.
Bonus points if you have a gigantic tower that is twice as tall as any of the rest, to keep things interesting and dynamic.
-
Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) Thread 30: Roman Numerals? What Roman Numerals?
I know that, and Brisbane is still really nice.
But I just really like old buildings and they've demolished quite a few of them. Still, plenty of old buildings that contrast rather nicely with the modern ones...
But unfortunately... We don't have anything twice the height of the rest that soars to the very heavens themselves. We're only Brisbane, not Toronto.
But we've got the Batman Building I mean, the State Law Building.
It's rather awesome.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) Thread 30: Roman Numerals? What Roman Numerals?
My band is good friends with a fairly talented photographer, so a few weeks ago the lead singer decided to get his vanity on and we did an excessively long photo-shoot. :smallsigh:
A few good moments, though.

We have the Shard now in London:
I'm not sold on it yet. It looks alright, but there's nothing near it that's anywhere near the size, so it just looks enormous. It reminds me of nothing quite so much as the Hotel of Doom.

Isn't the point to stand out and be imposing and fancy and stuff?

Well, yes. But it's not just imposing, it's out of place. Most of the buildings of the central London skyline - and pretty much all the iconic ones - aren't all that tall. South of the river, it's even lower. So you have this massive phallic... thing sticking up out of a relatively low-rise area.
I am prejudiced against it for reasons unrelated to the design, but the design doesn't do much for me anyway.

Guess I need to take it over before I move on to sink Manhattan. Or was I going to bring about an ice age and then invade Manhattan mounted on giant spiders? I forget.

Great now it's a penis. Thanks.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) Thread 30: Roman Numerals? What Roman Numerals?
Y'know, people said the CN Tower looks like a giant penis. I say that it says more about the person seeing the phallic image in the tower, rather than something about the city itself.

If someone else had one it's too mainstream, obviously.

Clearly none of you have seen the Gherkin in London. There's a number of extremely wry and political comments I could make in regards to its shape and occupant...On this occasion, I merely draw your attention to its extemely phallic shape.

I've seen that whatsit. Still just looks like a tower to me until people start running around saying it's a giant penis.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) Thread 30: Roman Numerals? What Roman Numerals?
There were once plans to make a large central tower with two smaller, domed buildings on each side of it, with the two smaller domed buildings being covered in hanging gardens and shrubbery. The construction material of choice? Pink Marble.
-
Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) Thread 30: Roman Numerals? What Roman Numerals?
Whoever called the Gherkin the Gherkin knew what they were doing (although it's not the official name). It means that when I look at it I see a gherkin rather than a phallus, which might have been the case otherwise. On the other hand, there are people who would look at an actual gherkin and think it looks like a penis, so you can't have everything.
(Does anybody know what the world record for most uses of "gherkin" in a forum post is?)
