I certainly think so, the hair actually coming past the top of the ear makes the face look a lot less empty. Plus you've now got more consistent line thickness on the hair.
The size limit is 120x120 pixels for an avatar, anything bigger just gets cropped to whatever the top leftmost 120x120 box is.
Just finished an avatar request (about 8 hours ago :smalltongue:):
It actually only took me about 2 hours to do, including trying to figure out how to make the sword, armor and various glowy effects look right. Surprisingly, both the requestee and I were happy with it in its first incarnation, something that rarely seems to happen anymore (i'm looking at you, poniesV4final.png :smallamused:).Quote:

Thanks! This piece uses a lot of rather experimental techniques (for me) and particular attention to smaller details and coloration, specifically where two areas overlap so that each part is more identifiable.
@Mauve Shirt: This video might help, if you're still doing that piece and having trouble.
:smalltongue: Sure; the request essentially boiled down to an Illithid death knight. I figured he'd be of the ebon blade, though, or going rogue.
So, Gender Bender and all that...
An aberration has no gender per se, so...

So the Kickstarter commenters started speculating about what other OOTS swag there could be, and it got me thinking about a tarot deck. So I decided to try my hand!
I'm not very familiar with the art/images of tarot, but a quick glance at Wikipedia made me think I should begin with the Two of Swords: simple card design+obvious choice of character=great starting point.
The original Rider-Waite (I'm basing everything off that deck) design is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Swords02.jpg
And my OOTS version looks like this!
Thoughts? I'm not perfectly happy with it, but it will certainly do for a start, I think. Comments and criticism are very very welcome (I'm pretty new at this whole vector art thing)!
Thanks!
Edit: wow, that was huge. Trying a smaller version.
Sorry about the double post here, but since the main page of the Arts & Crafts section isn't showing this thread (to me, at least) as updated-- even with any of the last five or so actual posts!--, I thought I'd try again.
Plus, new card!
The Knight of Swords (Rider-Waite image here) is a card of war and wrath. He is blunt and abrasive and is associated with fanaticism and obsessiveness. So who else but Miko?
i have some suggestions for possible improvement. first, the hand holding the sword looks a bit awkward. try making it so the wrist is to the right of the sword, and the hand rotated so that it looks like its holding the sword properly (not balancing it on their hand - although that would be pretty impressive ). the only half-decent example i can find from my previous work is the elven warrior i posted earlier in this thread (look at the hand holding the spear). also, the horse kind of looks like its flying, you may want to consider bringing it closer to the ground. anyways, other than that, it looks great, and i look forward to seeing more of what you do.
Vrythas.
Here are some party portraits I've done for the two 1st edition games I am currently in.

Or should I just not worry about the background at all?
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...agmadruid2.gif
@Serpentine - I hadn't said before, but I like the lava lady. The background is pretty cool. I think the one without a background would look a bit better if the arms were black like her body.
@ella ventic - Ooh, those cards are pretty cool. Hope to see more of them.
@thepsyker - Not bad, not bad at all. Could use a bit of polish, but I'm not complaining. Perhaps try not using perfectly straight limbs (especially the legs). It'd make them look less stiff.
@Crimmy - Cool as usual. :smallcool:
And now that I've commented on all the recent stuff, I can post my own guilt free! This is just a mishmash of avis I've made recently.

Wow, it's been a while since I've posted here. :smalleek:
Thanks! I can see that, the arms and the legs are the parts that I have had the most trouble getting to look right. Hands are another area that has been a problem, but with the monk in the last picture I think I finally figured them out. With the arms I think part of it is that they might be a little to long, but I could see how adding a bit more flex to them could help. I guess my one question would be on how best to add some flex to the legs without making the characters look bow legged when they are just standing still?
Well, the only real advise I can give in this situation is to show you how I do it and you can make of it what you will. So, an example.
http://i749.photobucket.com/albums/x...2321/Irena.png
This is generally how my avis' legs look in a plain old standing pose. Her legs are just a bit bent, and her feet are tilted as well. Both feet will rarely have the same angle on them as well. Usually the foot furthest away is closer to horizontal.
As for the hands, they aren't bad at is, but they look a bit... squished? Try making the arm and middle finger all one line and then making the remaining two fingers a half circle that intersects the arm line.
Ok, I can see what you are doing with the legs. Not sure it will work on all of the figures with the way they are currently angled, but with a few of the figures that are more in profile I can see that helping.
And thanks for the advice with the arms I touched the second picture up a bit following that suggestion and it really improved the dynamics of things.
I also see what you mean with the hands. The squished look is what I was getting at when I said I didn't think I quite had them down yet, but I finally figured out how to use the curve line function to make proper half crescents when I was working on the last figure for the second picture and after adjusting the rest of the party to have them I am happy with the results.
Thanks for the feedback. I'd return the favor, but I can't really think of any improvements to suggest for the stuff you posted.
edit: Here is the touched up version of the second picture

OK, my Google-fu is weak, as is my Search Forums-fu...
I am trying to find an old pic, consisting of all the major female characters splashing and having fun at the pool. All but Miko are wearing bikinis, whole Miko is wearing a totally non-sexy official Japanese High School Swim Team swimsuit.
Anybody know where this pic has gone?

I'm afraid there isn't a campaign journal, although I should note that these are just some scenes that I came up with to illustrate the cast in action and didn't actually happen in the campaign. Well, the bard did use the halfing to make a hot tub when we were in the arctic preparing to attack the frost giants, but he never used him to roast marshmallows.
I really need to get to work on that one. :smallsigh: I'm just soooo lazy when I don't really have any motivation for it...
I'm going to see if I can comment on most of the posts on this page.
Spoiler
Very nice, although lots of similar dark colours make it hard to perceive some of the details without close scrutiny. Another nitpick is that the flame could look more flame shaped. Otherwise, a superb avatar!
It's nice to see that other people are keeping up the avataring long after I stopped. Apparently Gender Bender Week came and went by.
I think I agree with Vrythas, their hands should hold their swords with the hands rotated to be gripping the hilts from the sides, with rotated wrists to get the same position of the swords.
Has no one mentioned the fire effects on the barbarian's swords looking a bit out of place? It's a good piece nonetheless.
I'm not sure what I could say about this pic. Serpentine, you are one of the most venerable avatarists in the history of Giantitp, not just because of how long you have been active. In response to this particular picture, if I might be allowed to criticize, I think the pose seems a little static. I suggest foreshortening or something to help add a sense of dynamics. I am not a professional artist however, so what would I know? :smallconfused:
Me? I haven't posted here in ages. :smalleek: For your pics, I have a vague notion that you have been avataring for quite a while, so no surprise at the quality. My tiny nitpick would be about the female body shapes, which could be tweaked just a little bit.
Kind of funny how even what Wonder Woman wears off-duty looks a lot like her hero-ing outfit. :smalltongue: I guess without the blue yellow and red color scheme she becomes less recognisable.
I think I remember this pic, although I've forgotten who made it. Good luck finding it, unless you have found it already!
Making unfinished sketches and doodles... sometimes on homework... I do it too.
In other news, I also have a thing to add to this thread, the first avatar I have made in a long time. Here it is:
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/5...uccubuspng.png
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/5729/thesuccubus1.png
I used MS Paint to make the final version (I sketched it out with pencil first), and Irfanview to resize it. This is a method of avataring I learned in 2007 from thatlankybugger's tutorial.
*peers upward* Your name is familiar, but I just can't place it. I know I've seen you arround in the past though; I just can't trust my abysmal memory. Probably before I changed my name though. :smalltongue:
As for your avi, very nice. I'm impressed overall. I actually quite like the overlarge eyes in this case, and the wings are well done. The only nitpick I'd have is a minor detail with the hair, or hairline specifically. I think it'd benefit from a line through the middle where it parts, and have the hairline a bit pointed. If that makes sense.
I have indeed been avataring for a while. Not long after I joined the forum in fact. *looks at join date* Man, time flies. :smalleek:
When you say the female body shapes could be "tweaked", what do you mean exactly? *hoards constructive criticism*
I just recognized you from the distinctive cherry blossom dryad character!
Thanks, I thought it was good to go back-to-basics on OotS style art. I think the eye position was partly inspired by the distinguished Dr. Bath, bless 'is soul. :smalltongue: I think this is what you meant by the line down the middle:Quote:

(Which I didn't make with Paint. But I'm a complete beginner with this new program.

The left figure is what the body shape of the pink glowing girl looks like to me. The right figure is how I would draw a female body shape. As you can see, just a slight difference. Of course, that's just me--there is no objective, platonic female body shape for stick figures, although mimicking the Giant's as closely as possible would be a good benchmark. Hope this helps!
Also, looking at it again, it seems the legs are a bit short-- I think they should be at least as tall as the body, and as for the succubus, clearly longer.
Yay!
Yus, that's exactly what I meant. I no longer have any nitpicks. *nodnod*Quote:

I expect that came about from the weird cutting and pasting and tweaking mess making that avi was. Looking at inkscape in the middle of making it was even more like I was constructing Frankenstein's monster than usual. :smalltongue:
Hi again!
After seeing someone mentioning the wish that the Giant would record one of his comic-making sessions I once again got the urge to film myself drawing. Since this random stranger also linked a few free programs he reduced my bother threshold enough for me to try it out.
And it is creepy watching yourself work. I highly recommend it. :smallwink:
If nothing else to reduce procrastination since you don't want that on camera.
Well, anyhow - if you want to watch too then just click the link below. It is a 2-part recording since youtube didn't allow me to upload more than 15 minutes in a go (and I'm not known as a fast drawer).
Part 1
Part 2
Oh, and here is what I draw during the clip, nothing large - just an quite simple (and slightly too detailed) avatar.

The secret is revealed!
This has made me even more in awe, Master Tsofu. :smalltongue:
Also, I will have questions as I watch, though I have not the time to completely watch it yet.
First question, what settings enable you to change the line color by clicking the color. When I do it, which is probably the default setting, it changes the fill color, and in version I have, I can't drag the color onto the stroke to change its color anymore. Knowing how you do what you do in that video would help me greatly.
One of these days I will try making a Tsofu-style avatar.
I think most of my avatars would take about 5 parts to film.
And three of those parts would be just me rubbing out random things and drawing them again. :smalltongue:
