Here's a silly first gym suggestion - Dragon
All the starters (if fire/water/grass is used) can't get a good same type attack bonus, along with the relative power of dragon moves, means you'll likely have to rely on using a number of pokémon to get through the gym.

Virbank Gym is... novel, isn't it? I think that's the first time I've heard vocals in a Pokemon game...

There are also some in the Nimbassa city gym. I was surprised too.

DEEEEEEENNNIS. DEEEEEEENNNIS.
Unless Ghestis' theme is instruments cleverly disguised as vocals.

Must have been too busy during the final battle to pay that much attention to the music...!

This doesn't actually sound totally unreasonable. I mean, if you want a good reason to force people to use some non-Starter Pokemon, this might be it. And low-level Dragon-types aren't insurmountable, so you could challenge them with some of the low-level Normal-types. I consider it at least an interesting thought.

I like the level cap expansion idea. =D

It would also have the advantage of not punishing one particular choice. There aren't many other types that don't interact specially with one of either fire, water or grass and not the others (fighting, dark, psychic and ghost, assuming no secondary types like Bulbasaur).

I considered it my earlier list, actually, then thought maybe dragon-types were a bit hard for bottom level. Then I thought how pants Axew is in terms of stats (only marginally better than a starter), so it could work. (Especially if you added a few new Pokemon in as well.)

The most obvious one (and I'm surprised it took them this long to come up with it) is, of course, Normal-type.

Re: Pokémon Thread XIII: Our Ponies are ON FIRE!
Brycen-Man vrs Riolu Girl made 20 billion after one showing? With, like, four people in the audience...?!
But... that was nonsensical and terrible!
Movies in Pokemon World must be really ba...
...
...
Wait.
Lights, Camera, Quacktion.
I forget, Cleavon Schpielbunk was supposed to be one the "good" directors...
Their movie industry is nearly worse than ours...!
On the plus side, that diversion is at least more entertaining (i.e. short and doesn't require any kind of hand-eye-coordination that I suck at...) than some of the other minigames, so maybe I'll go back and make a few more bad movies later. Maybe if I do a bad enough job, I'll get reviewed by ThatPokemonWithTheGlasses...!

In fairness, that is about equal to $250 million. For comparison, Ghost Busters made... $290 million.
Okay, yeah, people in the pokemon world have terrible taste in cinema.

Problems:
1.) Low-level dragons are few and weak. One of the reasons why all the Dragon specialists are late-game trainers is so that you see what the type is capable of... a team consisting of a Dratini and an Axew isn't exciting at all. (Really, this is especially why you don't see many Dragon specialists before level 30-ish and rarely before 40s... Dratini and Axew just don't threaten most Stage 1-2 Pokémon)
2.) Dragon type moves are really rare. There's a grand total of three attack moves that would be appropriate for a first gym leader to have on his party, and yes, two of those are/have been TMs, but aren't really first-gym-TM material. Twister is the only one that's normal for that level of Pokémon, Dragonbreath doesn't deserve to be made a TM again unless it gets a boost (at which point it shouldn't be a 1st-gym-TM), and Dragon Tail isn't really appropriate, considering that it's both of at least middling power and has a special effect. Dragon Dance is not only way too OP for a first gym to have at all, but I really don't think Game Freak should give it a TM. Dragon Pulse/Claw/Rage, Dual Chop, Draco Meteor, Outrage, etc. are simply too close to OHKO territory at a 1st level gym.
3.) The reason 2 is a problem is not only because most gyms try to have STAB attacks on the Pokémon, but also because they need to have a TM, which is the gym leader's "signature move" and generally of the same type as the gym's type focus.

In that case, should I send you my script of Plan 10 From Battlefield Earth Pail Kids Geniuses 2?

Re: Pokémon Thread XIII: Our Ponies are ON FIRE!
What about Ghost as a first Gym? Sure, it's got that handy immunity to Normal type attacks, but Normal types are just as immune to Ghost moves. You include an early mon with Scrappy, something else that learns Bite or something, and you've got an excellent first gym team right there. We could also get Night Shade as a TM again.

A signature move could be difficult to manage. Ghost type has a pretty messed up power curve- astonish one one end, and shadow ball on the other. One possibility would be Hex- low base power, but useful pretty much throughout the game. Alternatively, Shadow Sneak and Shadow Punch could both be interesting, though a bit simpler. That aside, it would be pretty cool.

No, why not Night Shade like tonberrian said? Flat-damage attack that scales so it's not too OP at one end, and not too UP at the other.

Re: Pokémon Thread XIII: Our Ponies are ON FIRE!
Terrible taste in cinema needs to be somehow involved in the next thread title, even if it is 8 pages away. On that note, I still need to get White 2.
I currently have a blank copy of Emerald, but I have no motivation to play it, even though I love the game. Any interesting ideas on how I should play it out? I'm thinking maybe an Anime based run, but if I do, what character? Ash? May?

I've never actually known someone to use Night Shade in the games. It's only ever really useful for breaking substitutes when you're running a stall team, and that doesn't really come up that often in the actual game. Unless you're running something like Blissey, an actual attack will almost always be the better option, and even if you are running a Blissey, you don't need to be able to do instantaneous damage outside of competitive battling.
The only other use I can think would be to bypass cosmic power spammers or some such, but even then I think that it would be preferably to just give out Clear Smog or Haze or some such.
-
Re: Pokémon Thread XIII: Our Ponies are ON FIRE!
I've used Night Shade. Specifically on my Smeargle, to help me damage things more than False Swipe does. Or to actually KO them when they're owned by Trainers and not things I want.
-
Re: Pokémon Thread XIII: Our Ponies are ON FIRE!
Oh, right, the other use! You can be sure you won't crit so you can't kill stuff by mistake!
-
Re: Pokémon Thread XIII: Our Ponies are ON FIRE!
There is the other option for a TM in a Ghost type gym- curse... it would most likely be overpowered for a first gym though...

That would be pretty sick, though. I could finally get a Curse Umbreon without bothering with breeding.

Re: Pokémon Thread XIII: Our Ponies are ON FIRE!
So, my revised gym order then.
Ghost
Psychic
Fighting
Ice
Ground
Rock
Bug
Dark
Grass/Fire/Water
Hmm. Elite 4, then.
Electric
Steel
Flying
Normal
And Champion is another wildcard - pokemon of varying types.
Would play this game.
-
Re: Pokémon Thread XIII: Our Ponies are ON FIRE!
Oh man, a Normal-type Elite 4 member. That sounds interesting. Just leaves out Dragon and Poison as types.
-
Re: Pokémon Thread XIII: Our Ponies are ON FIRE!
The normal-type Elite 4 member should have no-plate Arceus with a Silk Scarf :smalltongue:

Nah. Give him/her a SmashPass smeargle.
