This is more what I had in mind:
http://www.kinogo.com/victor/maps/planes2.png
Yes, but both the Abyss and Baator are bad places. I prefer that chaotic and lawful have no bearings on the afterlife, and that the destinations are Celestia or Baator. The lesser planes (Bytopia, Arcadia, Gehenna, and Acheron) would be the middle ground.
However I still prefer my schematic, in D&D the outer planes are the afterlife, in case you didn't know. Hence why when Lying died he went to Baator.
Yes. But the abyss and baator are, in DnD terms, both horrible places. Here's their one line description:
Baator
A realm of oppression, torment, and diabolical plots
Abyss
Evil lands of shocking perversity and unpredictable horror.
What about those saints, paladins, and even regular joes? We need a good place in the afterlife, and possibly a neutral one.
Saints and paladins go to Celestia, since they are directly blessed by the gods.
Here an (outdated) schematic of the Main Afterlife:
http://www.kinogo.com/victor/maps/planar-thing.png
Ignore the Arborean Zone; the Dimidian Zone covers its previous range. The False Abyss is your Abyss, the Baatorian Zone is (obviously) Baator, while the regular Joes (not pious or wicked enough to go to Baator or to the False Abyss and not chosen by any god) go to the Abyssal Zone, where they turn into crustacean-like creatures, most of which resemble krills the size of a cat. They don't do much in the Abyssal Zone.
Crustacean-like horrors? That doesn't sound quite fair. Remember, as stated in Remember, that Baator has nine layers.
Avernus
Dis
Minauros
Phlegethos
Stygia
Malbolge
Maladomini
Cania
Nessus
Yes, but are they included horizontally, vertically, randomly placed (like a solar system) or another way?
Why is the Chaotic Evil zone above the Neutral Zone? Isn't it descending in order of Good to Bad?
The order should be:
Dimidean
Baatorian
Abyss
False Abyss
Hadean
Dimidean sounds like Diminuitive, like small and weak. Maybe we should change it's name to something more powerful sounding?
Chaos doesn't equal evilness. I'd rather say that the Neutral Evil is far more evil than Chaotic Evil. It is even called sometimes True Evil, you know.
/\ He meant the zone which was neither good or bad (just neutral).
They're in that order to prevent the demons of the False Abyss from reaching the Hadean Zone and releasing its horrors.
That would be a good idea. Dimidean was inspired from latin Dimidium, which meant half. In my original ideas, the Arborean Zone was supposed to be good and the Dimidean Zone was to be half as good. I say we call it... the Agathean Zone ?
How about:
Abyss
Baator
False Abyss
Agathean
Hadean
That way, the just and noble guard these horrible beasts, imprisoned by them so that they can't reach the material plane.
I also made them in that order because the Agathean Zone was supposed to be land, Baator and the False Abyss caverns and sea, the Abyssal Zone deep sea and Hades below sea bottom, and because it the Abyss was not easily accessible. And an Abyss at the top sounds weird...
Ah, makes sense now.
Now, the Plane of Shadow is parallel to all the planes, whereas the astral plane is parallel to just the material.
However, could we keep my planar scheme, and still have the afterlife? We could rename the Baatorian Zone "Malefian" and the Abyss and false Abyss "Desolatian" and "Medianus" respectively. That way, we make the afterlife totally separate from the standard D&D planes.
The special cases, are that certain fiends, celestials, modrons, etc. will make the case of a particularly important being, and then a vote is taken with the archdevils, clockwork lords, etc. If they agree, then the soul is taken into a specific plane
(e.x. Joe, a very devout druid, is the sheer brilliant example of an avatar of nature. He's saved countless forests from being chopped down by the moonelf empire for their machines of war, but was killed in his most recent attempt. The beings of the Beastlands decide that he is worthy of being brought into the beastlands). Fiends can't simply decide that they want a soul, they have to have a strong enough connection (i.e. a blackguard, or lich)
The Baatorian level is actually a section of the layer Dis, a large iron prison. Dis slightly overlaps with the Afterlife. If Dispater agrees, he can send worthy souls in the Iron prison to his own layer, or even other layers. The 534th (Random number not taken on Wikipedia) layer of the Abyss overlaps with the Desolatian (Abyss) layer, and is a large inescapable landscape. Celestia overlaps with the Agathean layer.
EDIT: My new Avatar, Smexy, no?:smalltongue:
I love all these ideas. But we need an Ethereal Plane, to explain a certain deceased ethereal filcher. How about the Ethereal Plane is where the souls who are not at rest go? When a ghost wishes to 'materialize', he leaves the Ethereal Plane. And if he is 'slain', but not put to rest, he is trapped back in the Ethereal Plane until he can muster the strength to return.
Also, I'd really rather the planes not be planets. You shouldn't be able to hop into a spaceship and end up in the afterlife.
Planes aren't planets, but there are planets within a plane. You still need a plane shift to get through, but once you are there you can visit the other planets (i.e. one must plane shift to get to a planet of Celestia, but can then go to Bytopia, one of its planets)
My idea for the ethereal plane is that it surrounds the material plane, and it is essentially the plane of shadow for the material plane. You go through faster movement throughout it.
Shades, care to enlighten me as to why I am in your avatar saluting the US flag? :smallconfused: :smalltongue:
EDIT: I'm American? But I'm British. *drinks tea* see! SEE! O_e
Adding to kp's "Library" universe; plane of shadow would be surrounding each of the universes (each batch of rectangles). The afterlife would connected to only the material plane as if both are opposite ends of a wormhole through 6-d space (4-d from this perpective).
Picture
Given that we can show 4-d shapes' shadows, a wormhole going from material only to afterlife only in 6-d makes some sense.
Also, the planes would be infinite in size and a point in one plane would be in the same position in all the other planes (pin going through a stack of paper all lined up) if that wasn't clear before.
Pros; can add planes as needed, no need to throw out out planes, fits in with description of shadow and afterlife.
Cons; still need to work in elemental planes (fire, water, etc.)
BRC; It's nameless' time of the month (cuz of the boobies), so nameless is a little crazy right now. :smalltongue:
Well, you can either keep your country, or keep your gender.

Your choice:smallamused:
I did it because I was bored. I was making a hooded character, and realized that I could use the hood for Nameless. Then I was fiddling around with fill effects and I found a "White stripes" option.:smallamused:
