Correction: it was the hardest for him to learn. We've never been told that an Avatar is better or worse with some elements than with others once they've mastered them.

New episode thoughts:
SpoilerPersonally, I thought it was a nice thing to have a reasonably silly/lighthearted episode after the high drama of the last two. Makes for a nice breather. Had some of the funnier moments of the show so far, too, which means I give this one a thumbs up.
Me and my friends were laughing throughout the entire episode.
Part of me wants to believe that this was them sinking all the ships in a single episode, but I doubt we've seen the end of the love triangle subplot.
And I doubt even more that it will stop the shippers. NOTHING will stop the shippers.
clearly not in avatarverse...
guys.. I appreciate accurate depiction of reality as much as the next guy but...
it's a cartoon.. let's accept they've made an effort and given us reasonably plausible mechanics to what happens in universe, shall we?
applying real world physics and medicine and ..stuff.. doesn't work, in cartoonverse.
then maybe we can both hope they're mostly done with it in this one episode.
I really don't understand why people would want there to be a reproduction of the chemistry and "roles" the Gaang was based on in this new series.. with identical roles and everything.. who cares if Bolin isn't quite on par with Sokka..or if he takes a slightly different role? yes, Sokka may have been funnier and Bolin is more competent (well..duh..he's a bender, Sokka wasn't). So?
I say let's give them the time to develop their own chemistry
Loved the episode. I'm a bit of a shipper at heart, so I'm excited to see how this will turn out.
SpoilerI've been worried about how Naga and Pabu will stack up to Appa and Momo. This episode showed the animals a bit more; I'm actually liking Pabu more than Momo, and Naga's got the whole "loyal dog" thing going on. Not much personality at this point, but I might be expecting too much out of an animal.
Bolin got some much-needed depth here. I hope that they can remember that he's a full-on character, and not just comic relief.
Official prediction: Korra will use airbending for the first time in the match vs. Pretty Boy. It'll be unexpected enough to get a KO, but the team will be disqualified.
Also:
As I said earlier, I'm perfectly happy with how it's depicted in the show, along with its design compromises and inaccuracies.
It's when people start extrapolating and drawing incorrect conclusions due to not realising that these design flaws/differences are there, that I have issue with*.
*Well, not until they start them in capability arguments over the internet. :smalltongue:
agreed.. however, if you accept that their premise is flawed because it's using real world stuff to support (or criticize) in-world stuff, then you should agree that thats the main problem with what they're saying.. because otherwise you're finding yourself confuting real stuff with real stuff..both of them slowly creeping further and further away from the in-world stuff you're debating in the first place.
read it again..it will make sense, eventually
I don't think anyone wants a complete reproduction of the original team. But a lot of characters in many team shows follow the same basic pattern. The Tropes calls it the 5 man band, or whatever variant for however many people there are. And the original show roughly followed that pattern as well.
Aang was the lead roll
Katara was the team mom
Toph was the tough guy
Sokka was the comic relief and the smart guy.
Zuko was a brooding anti-hero
Iroh was the wise mentor figure
And so on.
In the new series, I don't think anyone wants to see that exactly repeated but in the general sense the rolls pop up. Bolin is now the comic relief and he is definitely a different character than Sokka. Sokka was smart, for instance. So if we are going to compare the comic relief of both series for simplicity I'd just compare him to Sokka directly, where frankly I find he comes up short (it's still early yet though).
I think I might be evil since
SpoilerI laughed at how Bolin react to Katara and Mako kissing and Bolin drunk on Noodles.
P.S- Is anybody thinking about fanfiction (no the shipping) but about Pro Bending Fanfiction (just thought about a part on Tsun Zu Art of War that
)Spoilerno escape= more fighting prowess, especially how the team will fare in the last zone of probending.
I think judging Bolin by Sokka's standards are improper, because he's very much not Sokka. He doesn't have the inferior position of a normal human, he doesn't have to keep his sass up in order to take place. He knows that if **** gets real, he can literally tear the place up. He can afford to let people have their victories.
Also, he's not really weak. We saw him solo a full probender team this episode.
Hmmm, that might be a different approach to take the next time something flares up about an aspect in the show - point out how it deviates from real life and what design choices/inaccuracies the writers have obviously made, then their argument based on these fallacies should just collapse like a house of cards.
And if that actually happens, pigs might fly. :smallsigh:
stranger things have happened
It was nice to see Korra use different styles of waterbending in the Probending, but then she got penalized. Seriously, the game lacks flexibility.
Just like how boxing (as I understand it, I'm not much of a boxer) doesn't allow grappling, kicking, or throws. It's a sport, and its rules are designed to test a certain skillset, and the game needs to be somewhat safe.
Beyond that, they're fighting with a deadly weapon. There need to be rules against unnecessary roughness. Even with the existing restrictive rules, we saw a broken helmet in the eye-area. Just think; when using that much force, what if the waterbender hadn't been using the 1-second-stream rule?
EDIT: Ninja'd.
I loved this episode especially as I am in a bet with a friend on who is going to stay with whom at the end of the series.
She wasn't penalized for using different styles of waterbending, she was penalized for unnecessary roughness.
She hit one of the opposing players by bringing a geyser up from the water source (most players just throw water at each other, mirroring what their fire and earthbending teammates do). That wasn't the problem, the problem was when she geyser-juggled the player in question, just knocking him around without gaining any real advantage.
Is the difference between an (American) Football player tackling somebody, and the same player tacking somebody then kicking them in the shins.
Watched the episode. WHY MUST ITUNES GET IT A DAY LATER!?
So... apparently you can shoot any sized stream of water, as long as it's not wider than it is thick.
And the penalty wasn't for using the water to trip, it was for constantly bringing up a jet of water.
Yeah, I think rules against unnecessary roughness are necessary in a sport like this. Wonder what sort of line skirting the Wolfbats did to get around them, though.
So far as I remember, the rules for streams are 1: Not wider than thing (So you can't just knock out the entire other team with a single wave) and 2: Streams cannot last for longer than six seconds (so you can't fire a constant "hose" to push them back).
Korra's triple-knockout at the end there apparently fell under the six-second limit (maybe they measure from when the attack is released, not when the water itself is drawn up from the source), and the entire other team was stupid enough to line up for it.
Unnecessary roughness is tossing around your opponent with no real benefit to you winning. The wolfbats just hit them with increadibly powerful attacks, but they were all directly linked to helping them win and not just to hurt the opponent.
Ah, so the Wolfbats were playing with totally necessary roughness. Awesome :smallcool:
are we seriously debating a match we haven't actually seen? is that a thing now?
