The Bodleian thing on medieval romance manuscripts sounds good as well.
Time machines.
The Bodleian exhibit also offers some lunchtime talks (also free), although I don't think there are any during my favourite optimal window.
Linky to the site about the exhibit. If you scroll to the bottom of the page and check out the 'Theme' and 'Object' scrolly sideways thingies you can see some of the things being displayed.
Including a manuscript of The Wife of Bath's Tale, the Oxford manuscript of The Song of Roland, the First Folio edition of As You Like It, The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnall, the only manuscript containing Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Cretien de Troyes Search For the Holy Grail, some quarto editions of Pericles. And The Faerie Queene (an original printing of) as well as C. S. Lewis' personally annotated version of Gawain and the Green Knight. As in, his personal copy. Amongst many other things. Such as a medieval manuscript containing a nearly full text of Dante's Divine Comedy dated to around 1350 (30 years post-writing).
. . .
Oh, and Terry Jones' personal screenplay of Monty Pyton and the Holy Grail including notes and revisions.
So, any takers?
Oh yeah.

Re: UKitp 11 - Y'all should join us in the fun!
Maybe if this turns into anything approaching a full meetup we go with the 10th or the 17th of March? If only because weekends generally lead to getting the maximum number of people available.
(Watches as Coorly panics at the suggestion of the maximum number of people:smalltongue:)
Connection between Milton Keynes and Oxford being what it is (at least until 2017/18 when I could just get a train), I'd probably be there no sooner than 8:30-9:00 am in any case, but the Stagecoach X5 runs pretty late, so I shouldn't need any accommodation- particularly since I'd have to make it back for the sunday anyway- ongoing responsibilities at the church I attend (no further details due to forum rules).

Re: UKitp 11 - Y'all should join us in the fun!
That reminds me, we need to get Serpy in front of a TV with a copy of Going Postal since I remember she was extremely interested in 'Jeff', whoever he was.

I'm away from the forums for 12 hours, and now I have to resort to a wall of posts...

The tenth it is then because I'll be going home early on the eighteenth. As in, before noon.
And yes, I am going to begin to panic. But from the way it looks to be panning out it'll be another weekend meetup, and Serpy staying longer to check out the sights?
Can do that.
At least the venue should be easy enough. My rooms. And the JCR. And the JCR kitchen. And the JCR TV room. And the bar. And other pubs nearby. And restaurants nearby. And Fellow's Garden. And Christ Church Meadows.
But if it gets to ten plus people I'll need to get a permit because then it becomes a Party.

Oi! Anyone driving down (although what are you doing trying to use a car to get to Oxford?! Absolute nutters the lot of you. I don't even know where the nearest actual car park is in Oxford) remember to pop by Grlump's palce and stuff him in the boot.

Of course, that happens to be the day after my birthday, so it'll end up being something of a joint not our birthday but close enough to it celebration:smallwink:
On the other hand, being 27 on the 9th, my birthday is obviously so much less significant than Coorly's- plus she's the host and thus gets precedence.
As said before, I'm perfectly willing to contribute towards the spread of baked goods and other edibles (though I'll likely stick to simple things that will travel relatively well, like scones)...
Considering Coorly's potential need for permits, it'd probably be a good idea to get a firm grasp of numbers (or at least as firm as possible) fairly soon (I have no idea how long the red tape for these usually takes, but I'd always be in favour of getting it out of the way as soon as possible- if only to prevent the last minute buildup of jobs from being quite so big).

No trouble, we just make sure we put them in back to back- to prevent certain misunderstandings.

Ah, that's when it is. Hmm, that may be not out of the question for me.
Also, that reminds me, I found the dates for Gondoliers, it's the week after that. 29th - 31st of March, with a matinee as well as an evening performance on the Saturday.

Though it's obviously good to have the fairly unified meeting time where hopefully most people will be there, I still like the idea of it being a general "Drop in any time during this time" thing. Like a birthday party one of my friends had a couple of years back, only a bit longer and further away.

I will most definitely be there, though I think I already made that clear enough.

Re: UKitp 11 - Y'all should join us in the fun!
As stated, I'll definitely be up for this.
I plan on staying overnight on the Friday and Saturday, heading back on Sunday. Will anyone else be staying at a Travelodge or Premier Inn or something? Just so I can book it in advance and get a cheaper rate.

Wow.
I didn't even know those existed in Oxford! That's how little I venture anywhere near the outskirts of this city.
Had the best part of three years of my life centred around this place and I don't hardly know it at all.
General Oxford Meetup Information:
I'm assuming one night - I have no real preference which - we'll be going out to dinner?
To stall our prevaricating before the meetup, have a not very complete list of restaurants, cafes, take aways and sundries in the immediate centre of Oxford. By immediate centre I mean ten minutes very lazy walk away from my room. THIS IS NOT COMPREHENSIVE. AT ALL:
Spoiler
Show
On High Street:
The Indian Place - I forget it's name, only been there once
The Thai place - never been, know it exists though
Harveys/Taylor's (x2) - a panini/sandwich place, shuts early though
Queen's Cafe - good food and ice cream
The Grand Cafe - cocktails, champagne meals and things
That Cafe by the lights at by Magdalen - what? I've only been there once since first year
Patisserie Valerie - very expensive but the dessert are to die for. The window displays are like food porn!
Achmed's kebab van - Merton, Oriel, Teddy Hall, Univ, and Queen's (and probably a few other's) unofficial official kebab van; good fun and friendly family
Mehdi's kebab van - it's another kebab van; nice food
Pizza Hut
Cafe Nero
Turn left at Carfax Tower and we're on St. Aldate's:
G&D's - ice cream parlour; very good ice cream
Some cafe type things
That kebab van I've seen by Pembroke Square
(Yeah, I don't need to go down St. Aldate's very often
If you turned right at Carfax Tower you're on Cornmarket Street:
MaccyD's
Burger King
KFC
That milkshake place
Wagamama's (down the street Superdrug's on) - I like it, but it's a bit impersonal and you can't really get individual tables
If you turn right at the top of Cornmarket you're on Broad Street:
Hassan's kebab van - I love this one and Achmed's about equally
Morton's - a sandwich bar
Some cafe type thing
If you turn left at the top of Cornmarket you're on George Street:
a kebab van - not very nice
Bella Italia - and the Italian onslaught begins, cheapish and good quality food
Ask Italian - a little more expensive, but very good quality
Fire and Stone - a pizza place - it's nice, and I adore their pannacotta
Jamie's Italian - never been, but it's an Italian
GBK - Gourmet Burger [something]; amazing milkshakes and good burgers too
Giraffe - expensive, but it does a wide variety of meals from all over the world
Pizza Hut - this is a nasty one, only went there once and it wasn't so good
Nando's - it's Nando's
If you turn right at the cinema you're in a little square containing:
another couple of kebab places
A Thai maybe?
Noodle Nation - a Chinese
Some other things? Never really been here looking for food
If you went straight past Carfax Tower you're on . . . I forget the street name:
Another kebab van (you can tell this is a student city can't you?)
Maxwells - a fantastic burger bar
That weird maybe SPanish-ish cafe?
A lot of clubs and restaurants including, yes, an Italian
AND WAY MORE PUBS THAN YOU COULD SHAKE A STICK AT. Including a bar about fifteen seconds from my room.
That enough options for people to bicker about?
EDIT:
And I'm very fine with this being a drop in any time kind of week as long as you call me beforehand. I actually have university work tentatively scheduled for this week (assuming I get my vac. res.) and I don't want to leave someone hanging at a station because I'm in a tutorial or something.
For the sake of things, have some arbitrary rules about coming down during ninth week for this extended kind-of meetup that's really only about hanging out with our Serpy and watching her discover Oxford:
If you're thinking of coming down - even if you're not positive you can - say so here. This will help me decide if I need to book a Party Permit for Friday/Saturday/Sunday hanging out in college. If I can't get one it's no biggie though.
Post in this thread the day before you come down. Hell, you can even post the day you come down, but I can't guarantee you getting pertinent information.
You will be PMd some numbers and things.
There will be pick ups and whatever from stations or places by me or [designated person, maybe Serpy?] or directions, whichever you prefer.
Things will happen.
When I have university things, shouldn't be more than three hours or so over the week you can't come to my tutorials. Sorry, but that's how it is. If I could I would. Not that you'd be interested anyway.
So during tutorial times go do things and, just like back in secondary, we will have a prearranged time and place to meet back up.
No sex in my rooms. No seriously. That nearly happened once.
Writing notes in my academic books is perfectly acceptable, but try to keep it mostly to annotating my texts. (Don't abuse this)
I only have one bathroom, and it is really quite small. Be careful where you put your things. And I only have two towels now.
Help yourself to my tea. And if you need another cup tell me. The kitchen won't let you in without a fob. A fob none of you have.
No, seriously. No sex in my rooms. It's loud and distracting.
AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!
I can maybe get the curator of the Medieval Romance exhibit/some other expert to give a talk/discussion when we go see the exhibit. But I'd have to email now and fix a date.
If anyone wants this, say this and argue amongst yourselves for the best time. And I'll do what I can.
Oddly, I actually know the curator (Dr. Perkins), I had him last term for some classes.
My world.
-
Re: UKitp 11 - Y'all should join us in the fun!
Ok - I've had a look and it seems that the Premier Inn is the closest to Koorly at 2.7 miles away @ about £70ish a night. There's a Holiday Inn and Travelodge but they're 4 & 5 miles away respectively.
-
Re: UKitp 11 - Y'all should join us in the fun!
I believe my working schedule is forbidding me from laying down any extensive plans as far as oxford goes.
Serp, I'm working for a bunch of when you're here but I'll try and see you at some point!
