All good comments, Elagune. Shun these naysayers and unbelievers!

YOURS IS THE FANWORK THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS!

Well, after all, everyone who will see these pages will have read the comic anyway, and they'll know it's Roy. So I wouldn't worry too much about it in this instance.
I wish I had a rabid fandom...
Hey, FoE, stop giving me inferiority complexes!
Fair enough for the black thing. To be honest, I know most manga are rather... restricted in their features, so I didn't expect you to make him look black through features only. Manga though does have a range of colours/shading (can't remember the name in English for the screen-thingies they use), but your reason for not using that makes sense too, as colouring over it might prove tricky.
(Although, since you're doing things digitally, you could do it on a separate layer and change just that layer if you do colour them, I guess).
At any rate, thanks for the explanation, it makes sense.
I love Xykon's face and expressions.
I'm seriously considering asking for an avatar of Xykon's "Oh Crap" face.
As for what I AM sure of, you should definately get into the comic-writing scene. I mean, you would have the readership of everyone who posted in this thread, at least! I definitely want more of your style!
Has anyone introduced you to the fanservice thread yet? I'm sure the two of you will get along swimmingly.
I would love to add myself to the ever-growing chorus of fans - your work is fantastic, both on a technical level and on an artistic level. By re-imagining these scenes you've made them your own, which takes an eye for the narrative, an eye for the style, and considerable chutzpah. My hat is off to you indeed.
If I may put in a request, however, it would be for 392 or the duel there beginning. Because Elan becoming competent (and swinging from a zeppelin through glass plate in order to cause grievous bodily harm to Nale for daring to harm his Haley) is one of my favorite moments, bar none, and would really fit with your style.
Oh, also the sixth panel of 20 specifically, though the whole strip would be nice.
Lissou, you made a point about using tones. It's true that I could simply throw on a tone over Roy's skin, but the problem with doing that is escalation. If I just put it on Roy, he'll stand out too much. To lessen that, I'll have to tone over other parts, which means I'll have to tone over even more, and then the end product is basically a grayscale piece that'll remove some of the energy. Grayscale comics are often hard to figure out because of the shading (coloured pieces are better because you can tell things apart), which'll make it harder to read.
The artist of One Piece, for instance, is a master in the art of using only black and white for his drawings. The only times he uses tone are when he wants to dramatize a scene or split the foreground and background. I look to Oda for inspiration whenever I feel lost.
Anyway, I decided to make another avatar. Here's Xykon.
If anybody wants, they can take my old V one. I'll probably make more of these things anyway.
EDIT: To the poster who earlier mentioned Xykon's eyes. Well, yes, it's true that skulls don't have eyelids, but the way Rich draws Xykon moves his eyes around as though he does. Heck, in one strip he even closes them. I could change them, but that would take away a little from Xykon's personality, and I want to preserve all I could.
He's deciding what spell to kill us with. :smalleek:
Love it.
He should have his blinking eye be a red line rather than a blinking skull
Blinking skulls??? Not on my watch! And you, mythical creatures! You don't exist! Hey! HEY! You with the pointed ears! There is no such thing as magic!
Huh?
What? Oh... the setting?
Umm...
*aherm*
Right then, as you were.
More!
Spoiler
Making these avatars is so fun and easy. Won't be doing any that haven't shown up in my pages yet, though. Need to iron out the designs first.
Ya know... I've always considered comic 449... with the Ghost Martyrs... to be the most awesome thing to happen in the entire comic so far...
I have never been able to read that one without feeling an overwhelming chill at how epic that second to last panel is.
Seeing it in manga form... just as epic. I struggle to find the words to tell you just how awesome you are.
I'm loving your Xykon, man.
I saw this thread a few times in the arts section. "Hey, looks like a fun idea, probably won't actually end up doing much, as with most cool but challenging ideas..." Then today I actually came and looked at it.
:smalleek:
Wow. These are amazing. Not only fantastic transitions from the comic into this style and form, but also just a really great job with all the little stuff, the additional detail and look you can get out of the more full manga style than you can out of the stick style. Really fantastic. I applaud extensively, and will be regularly checking in to see if there is more.
Couple of thoughts/suggestions/whatever on what other people have mentioned.
Xykon's eyes: I got the impression from the comic that it was more the bone being remarkably flexible (for purely artistic, expression-forming purposes) than some sort of bone eyelids. Dunno how hard it'd be, or even if it'd look any good, in this style, though.
Roy's face: He looks kinda... girly. He's meant to be reasonably big and tough (for example, his body rectangle is wider than, say, Elan's), but he has a distinctly feminine face. Could be talking out my... ear, but I have the impression that black people tend to have less soft features. The very narrow nose, to be extra-specific, seems to counter the black impression (if anything, it's narrower than several of the others).
But eh. If it were to be coloured, it'd probably be a non-issue anyways...
Looking forward to more!

Wow. This turned out way better than I expected.
Roy looking kinda girly is true, I suppose. Well, you guys have only seen one panel of him so far up close. Maybe decide again after I finish the next page?
I see. I'm still not familiar with the rules here, so this is really helpful.
I, for one, don't see any problem with your Roy.
My oh my, that is absolutely beautiful, great work!
It won't happen probably, but I have a desire to see them all >.>
As a request, I'd like to see the last panel of 532
