'It would be too easy I guess...'
he tries one more and goes to the students affair office.
6. 3 to 1 ratio + water.
"Bleh, okay I can now say for sure that changing ratios doesn't help..." he mutters before leaving the labs and going to student's affairs to give them one of the normal CLW potions.
After that he goes to library and looks for some books about summoning.
In the Library, Alembic looks around for a bit, questions the librarian on the method of organization, and then begins looking up the best methods for storing and preserving alchemical components.
Since his first assignments seem to be more about learning to gather materials than about the alchemical process - because obviously the 'cure light wounds' potion was little more than an excuse to get the students into the forest - then his first area of self study should be in finding out what he needed to preserve excess gathered material.
First, find a cheap method of storing large quantities of ingredients. Likely mason jars, baskets, or other simple storage devices will suffice, but knowing what other alchemists use will be much simpler than trial and error.
Second, discover the means of drying and preserving the herbal components he'd be using. He could come back to look up means of preserving animal components after they get a potion assignment involving animals, for now herbal preservation would be quite useful to know. Especially finding out what is involved in turning his herbs into powders for simple storage and rapid potion making. Also, it would be good to know what steps are needed to re-constitute such powders into workable potions ingredients, and the keys to preserving the potency of those ingredients through the drying process.
Lastly, find a book that details the herbal ingredients he'd already used - spinacherb, blue petal and water lily. Any book that contained those three and their properties would certainly have dozens or hundreds more herbs listed, giving him a 'shopping list' of what to look for the next time he was in the forest.
You both find your books. The research on summoning shows the existence of "mana" special creatures tied to the elements.
The preservation shows that most make an alchemical substance to prevent aging. Keeping things cold, and sealing them in air-tight containers is also common.
Quill heads straight to the fantasy section (if as such exists), but, pausing, she sighs and begins to look for a set of books detailing transformations and transmutation magic, attempting to cobble together enough books to find some sort of recipe.
SpoilerLooking for basically any transmutation spell, mostly had in mind potions of enlarge person or bulls strength or related things.
Physical spells and potions tend to be tied to the earth element. Combining powered ores with herbs and so on. Often to counter the metallic taste, a harmless wind element herb called "fresi" is added to give it a taste that doesn't make you feel like you're eating rocks.
Sebastian notices how difficult it would be to rebuild an arcane spell as one he would be able to cast and gives up on attempting to convert them, instead he looks for any tomes on the effects of organic and living components in potion crafting, he pays extra attention to any passages that mention blood.
Blood tends to be tied to the level of intelligence and type of the creature. Blood from a rabbit, a wolf, or any other animal acts like normal blood, but the instant one crosses into using humanoid blood, it becomes a darker act, and often will corrupt the potion. Oddly enough almost all outsider blood will do the same, regardless of whether it is angel or demon blood. There is an odd exception to the rule however. Angel blood given 'willingly' is a powerful holy item. It is unknown to even the greatest alchemists how the blood knows it was willingly given, but some believe it has to do with the fact that angels are outsiders and the body and soul are one, therefore the blood, has part of the soul, etc.
Iron is common in my armour spells like iron body. Gold is ironically quite useless in terms of alchemy outside of certain special cases. Gems of various types go into the strongest and most powerful spells, in particular the diamond, which is key in many resurrection spells.
Gems are often powered by combining them with their synergy element, fire. Often making an earth potion involves extreme heat, and having to use careful additions of water to avoid evaporating it all. Often the simplest way is to freeze the ingredients in a block of ice, throw it in the pot and stir at high temps, but with certain plants, and sensitive ingredients this can lower the quality overall.
Alembic attempts to piece together the formula for the Unguent of Timelessness from his various researches into ingredient preservation.
After that, he heads back to his dorm and goes to sleep.
SpoilerIf you need a roll, here's a d20: [roll0], with +17 for craft(alchemy) or +10 for know(arcana) or spellcraft, whichever is appropriate.
Quill will do the same (attempt to get a recipe, then go to bed), but with potion of enlarge person.
Spoiler[roll0] Not quite the same modifier, but...
Edit: I am impressed at my own skill. I am VERY tempted to drink this now.
Aldaric looks through the books about summoning, then reads some about the laws of Calling extraplanar creatures, just the basics for now, but it is a nice and necessary thing to know...
After that, remembering that he is actually in crafting school, he looks around for some clues about recipes, mostly the art of Scroll Writing... for now he tries to find the formula for appropriate magic ink, to make a scroll... (he would be really surprised if a normal one was used for scrolls)

There is no one formula for magical ink. However you do figure out the formulas for a few of the weaker ones. Fairly easy to make too, and the inks follow a very well documented process. Fire spells use fire ink, etc, etc, the Conjuration spells are complex, and require special chalks to be used to bind the being, as well as the circle being drawn right. You rub your head, this is going to be hard. Every type of being has it's own circle.
Sebastian is getting rather frustrated with the amount of arbitrary yet essential components in the potions he has been reading about, he tries to recreate the recipe for potion of inflict light wounds.
However he adds a slight variation, he includes five drops of his own blood when writing down the recipe.
SpoilerCraft(Alchemy check) [roll0].
After the attempt he heads to bed for the day.
You all head to bed, and wake up the next day. There is a post on the dorm billboard, to equip your fighting equipment and head to the living dungeon for those in the Combat Training class.
Alembic wears the same gear he always does (with his 'lab' coat acting as light armor, a cloak covering his bandoleer full of potions and his various bits of equipment looking like things the students are usually carrying around for study, no one has thus far noticed that he's walking around effectively armed to the teeth).
However, knowing that he's likely to face a fight this morning, he diligently preps a few simple extracts of his own devising using the alchemist's kit and materials he keeps stored in his magic backpack (prep extracts of Expeditious Retreat and True Strike, this works like a wizard preparing spells, except they're in potion form and I can hand them to other people to use if I want due to a discovery, also I've got a 'spell' slot left, which I can prep as another potion off my 'spell' list if I've got 10 minutes and an alchemist's kit). He also ensures that his mutagen of improved dexterity and bomb potions have not yet expired.
Preparations completed, he heads to the beginner's combat class.
Aldaric went to sleep after checking basics of summoning small air elemental. He also tries to find formulas for some spells, Scorching Ray, Mage's Armor and ... CLW. He would like to see if he would be able to get a better mark if he got both potion and scroll as his homework...
If he managed to get these formulas, he would try to make a scroll of Mage's Armor, and if he has enough time he would make a Scorching Ray as well.
In the morning he wakes up full of energy, impatient to see what new would bring another day in the academy.
Today he wear more practical clothes instead of his usual elegant ones, he also bring his dagger and keeps Rocza in flesh as he walks for Basic Combat classes.
You approach the living dungeon and your mouths drop. THAT'S the combat teacher? She looks like a combination of a supermodel and the hulk. Looks 7 feet tall, wearing bracers of armor, and an outfit that reveals her middrift and abs that look like you could sharpen a sword on. Muscles bulge on her arms and legs, and next to her is small container. The boys in the class at looking at her with a sense of aww, and perverted stare.
"Welcome, to the first combat class, where I'll be teaching you how to use the living dungeon. Divide into groups. Group size is a maximum of 5, since the dungeon can only take 6 people at a time. Minimum is 1, but keep in mind I'm not going to be helping you during your run, outside of advice."
The class nods and divides. A boy looks up at her. "How...how strong are you?"
The teacher looks at him. "Strong enough. My clan teaches that couples should be battle couples. So the girls train up, and marry the boys who manage to beat us in combat. The duo fighting style is a dangerous one to face."
"Do....do...you have a husband?"
The teacher laughs. "Enough questions for now." She opens the box. "These cards are made to summon an exact dungeon, we call it beginners. It's a base run through with nothing super dangerous or sneaky. Take one for your group."
SpoilerDid Aldaric manage to make the scrolls? Did he have the materials or do I need to pay something?
The scrolls could be handy in the dungeon...
Aldaric looks around and walks to join his, usual already, group.
"Hmm, there is four of us... Do we look for the 5th?" he asks looking around for somebody without the group... preferably warrior of some kind... preferably a girl too...
Alembic accepts a ticket from the teacher, then immediately groups with Sebastion. After a second of hesitation, he allows the charismtic boy (his name started with Al...) and the Pokey Girl into the group as well. Being sure to keep Sebastion between himself and her.
Recalling that they now consisted of four different flavors of spellcaster, he simply says to the others, "We need a fighter. If I must, I can find mechanical traps. Need help finding magical ones." He doesn't look happy at the prospect, however.
Quill shrugs. "I'm a fair hand at fighting. But youre probably right."
She turns to the class.
"Yo guys, anyone with big muscles want to join a four-person team?" she calls loudly.
Alembic looks around for a few minutes, then shrugs as no one takes Quill up on her request. "Looks like we go in as is."
So saying, he steps into line at the altar, ready to enter the dungeon.
