Re: The Post-Kickstarter Discussion Thread: Bask in the Afterglow
My two favorite things in life--The Original Series and OotS--together at last. To say I am overjoyed would be a terrible understatement.

The gold wrist-stipes indicate rank. Captain=2.5, Cmdr=2, Lt. Cmdr=1.5, etc

I believe it was just that they thought Patrick Stewart looked better in red*. The "redshirt" stereotype may have been involved too.
*That was definitely why they redefined Data's role from the intended Science Officer to "Chief of Operations" - apparently, no-one thought the blue shirt worked with Spiner's makeup.

To be fair, the kiss in PS was awkward *anyway*, given that mind control was involved...

Hey, by that standard, Haley's wearing a "male" uniform! (Besides, in the pilots women were allowed to wear trousers...)

Another fun detail... see that yellow display next to the door? Is it a side/top view of the Enterprise, or a stick figure lying down? You decide

Heh, that's cute! I didn't even notice that.

Very obviously a laid down stick figure in the high res versions.
Also if Mr Burlew is reading this, in response to a twitter comment visible on the left:
The Redshirts = Doomed was an accepted fact back when TNG first aired as i recall.

Re: The Post-Kickstarter Discussion Thread: Bask in the Afterglow
In fact to add to that i've taken advantage of my new systems monitor to review the old images and spotted the following things that i missed previously:
The Temple picture has the words "After Trampier" written on the steps
The Snowman Picture has a small winged snail in the background, presumably half dragon.
The Beach Picture's O-Chulu is covered in the same scars he got from the shark tank indicating there are Sharks in the water, no wonder he looks so unhappy.
The forest picture in addition to the little drake that i didn't identify as such at the time also has a pair of ogres in the background and an Earth Elemental in the foreground.
Oh and another Trek one. The lights above the turbolift make the ship look like some sort of elemental....

IIRC, the "female" uniform is called a Skant, and it's supposed to be unisex, although only women wore it in TOS. But there's a shot of a man wearing one in the separation/evacuation sequence in Encounter at Farpoint.

Yes, half-dragon, and also vampiric half-troll lycanthropic and fiendish...

There are a lot more males wearing dresses un TNG if I recall. I always thought they looked extremely fancy.

The Red Shirt Curse also applied to the bridge crew. Scotty was killed, by Nomad (and then fixed, likewise). And Uhura was brain-wiped (also Nomad). It's no wonder that they all went on strike until Starfleet agreed to swap colors with Command.

The skant was discontinued for both men and women, outside of flashbacks, after Season 2. Don't ask me why.

This of course ignores the times Kirk and Spock died. Why, it's almost as if having contrived manufactured drama was a staple of storytelling! :smalleek:
Rich's poking fun at the power of acquiring a name is far closer in spirit to the original use of redshirts, though even then there were minor exceptions. It is only through the hazy mist of time that the supposed rule of red = doomed came into being. And even then I figured most people were joking and knew it was more about New Unnamed Extra than anything else.

I was actually thinking about the kind Picard wore in fancy occasions, which was a bit longer. And I believe appears after Season 2.

Your reffering to Dress unifourms that included trousers, they're at the bottom of the link given ;).

Well, he did get tired of doing the Picard Maneuver...

So the origin pdf stories, will they ever be viewable by non backers or available for purchase? It kills me knowing there is story content I wont ever get to know.

It will probably be published one day, I think Giant said something about it. But I'd like to purchase them as well, right.
Since I already had the books, I had little interest in those.
It's a pity that BRitF doesn't have a code that allows you to download the pdf...
-
Re: The Post-Kickstarter Discussion Thread: Bask in the Afterglow
It's pretty unlikely they would get published before they're all finished, though...you'd need to bundle them all together to make such a thing cost-effective.

Rich said multiple times that he plans to print hem one day - though he hasn't envisioned yet how (e.g. whether in one book or across multiple).

Since Rich said that How the Paladin Got His Scar is "clocking in well over 50 pages at this point", I guess after that we come to a total page-count that starts to begin publishable (O-Chul, Haleo&Julian, Belkar and Therkla combined will be longer than the current print-only books), but we will just have to wait what Rich will do.
[I personally like the Idea of "Book K" that contains all of the Kickstarter stories, even if it entails even more waiting.]
-
Re: The Post-Kickstarter Discussion Thread: Bask in the Afterglow
Yeah. We're good at waiting. Sometimes.
Other days we're like kids on Christmas morning, trying to decide if the parents really need to sleep past five.

And, despite legally having all the PDFs on my computer, I will still buy that book, even if it doesn't have so much as a pixel of new content. :smalltongue:

Next up is a wikipedia paget that doesn't give the chorus's lyrics.
So there is some dispute on that point. Both Boldly and Only have multiple pages, Boldly makes more sense, but Only is what I hear when I listen and what youtube which actually has the music says.

I would disagree. Only makes more sense. "Well, we would go in reverse, but we can't find it, so we're only going forward because we can't find reverse.

"Only" makes some sense, but "boldly going" is a widely recognized phrase relating to the Star Trek franchise, and with the use of Star Trek references in literally every other line of the lyrics, "boldly" is the logical choice.

Plus there's "Dim Sun" to come at some point as well.
On a related note, does anyone know if there's a plan to print all the Gygax magazine comics?

I would seriously doubt that Rich has the rights to do that--depends on private details of his contract with Gygax Magazine, of course, which he's not likely to tell us and nor are we entitled to know them.
