SpoilerThe way I see it this was a Ponyville prestige thing. It wasn't life and death, if they failed to lift the water then they would probably just hire a crew from Cloudsdale and do it the next day. In that case though Ponyville would be humiliated because they failed in their task. So Spitfire didn't help because the only thing at stake was the pride of the local Pegasi and her helping would be as bad as just letting them fail.
new episode
Spoilerthe other thing i caught...
they couldnt crack 800 til Fluttershy jumped in at end
so how did dash expect to break the record of mid900?
they had 7 out with the Feather Flu
7x(lets be nice and say 15 wingpower each instead of the target of 10 wingpower) makes 105
...which would have put them at 900 flat = no record

New episode
SpoilerSo I finally got time to see the episode, but it truly was worth the wait.
It felt completely and utterly right. And I loved it to pieces.
might be my favorite this season - through I will await judgment on that until the summer, both so I can see each again and so the "new episode" enjoyment explosion has had a chance to die down.
only strange thing is what wad up with that strange pony and why did he look that way?
Genetic condition? Excessive body building? steroids? (probably not that last one)
Genetic condition making him naturally "weak" which he took as a challenge and thus muscle trained to a very large degree to overcome it? thus both explaining the large muscles and the very thin legs at the hooves together with the slightly odd shape.
That last one is going in my head canon until I hear a better explanation/somepony makes something really good using an equal alternative which then catches on in my mind.
Also I think Spitfire did the right thing in not joining in. That way Ponyville got a chance to avoid the humiliation of needing outside help, while if the failed all that would happen would be that the needed water would get there a bit later. Plus if the weather is set up smartly, they would call in the replacement water slightly before they would need it, exactly to give a margin for unavoidable errors.
As a last point, I am extra super happy about the way Rainbow as like "ignore the record then, the job still needs to be done" and the way they stuck with it and just let them complete the job and that was not only fine - it was good.
Finally watched the new ep, so can join in:
SpoilerThe way I understood it, Spitfire was there as an overseer, she wasn't supposed to take part in anything. Kinda like you don't expect a contractor representative at a building site to do any actual building. Ponyville got a contract, or an equivalent of one, for delivering their supply of water to Cloudsdale, and Cloudsdale sent their representative, Spitfire, to oversee the project.
Now, new episode thougts.
SpoilerWow. I mean, wow. Maybe it's just the contrast to the two episodes I didn't really like (Putting Your Hoof Down and Friend In Deed), but the last three episodes show a consistent ramping up of overall quality. While there again were a few things I don't really like (treating feathered wings as arms is wrong, however you present it), the rest of the episode and the characters and the worldbuilding potential all together overshadow them completely. Some moments were confusing, like wingpower/windpower readouts... I guess if you hold to the theory of Supernatural Martial Arts, where the wings are the foci for pegasus magic, then measuring total wingpower will actually work, as will directly adding it up rather than doing some fancy windspeed equation work.
And Fluttershy is a tree. That joke never gets old, does it?
Another great episode overall.
Welcome! Stick around, post a little, it's much better than lurking, trust me!

SpoilerLoveditloveditlovedit!
So many cool new BG ponies, and with names too! I really liked the dark blue one with the constellation cutie mark!
Why is Angel so nice all of a sudden?
Lotsa Derpy!
FlutterDash now surpasses RariShy as my favourite Fluttershy ship.
I really liked the slapstick moments in this episode. Sometimes they're overdone, but I was laughing so hard when Rainbow's eyes went straight through the tree! XD
Also, we now know Spitfire is the Captain of the Wonderbolts.
One of the best S2 episodes so far.
Also, new characters:

On season 2, Episode 22
SpoilerLiked it. Especially the 80's power training montage parody and the results of it.
I like Rainbow Dash's "Ok, record can't be done, lets just do the job" thing.
Also, I like how Rainbow Dash saw right through every attempt at Fluttershy trying to lie. Dash may be athletic, but she ain't stupid.
This seems like it would be very funny, if I weren't disproportionally offended by it. It's hitting me less as 'Hey, shippers get out of hand' and more as 'OMG STOP SHIPPING PONIES YOU WEIRDOS'
Probably completely unfounded.
I did! The picture was awesome, and made me look the song up. Sadly, the song that I imagined as I read it was way way better, and the real one wasn't my kind of music, so I was disappointed. xD
This seems like it should be a thing.
^=what that post read as to me
New Episode
SpoilerThis season's Sonic Rainboom. Possibly better.
All hail the OTP.
Ep 22
SpoilerA very solid episode. I love how Dash wavers between being aggressive and understanding, knowing where the line is with Fluttershy and when not to cross it. I like how Fluttershy utilizes her animal friends (who only she can understand apparently) and seeing her distraught just makes me want to hug her. I like seeing into her mind a bit more, which reminds me...
I REALLY need to get of my butt and find some inspiration to work on the Fluttershy Psychoplane fic idea that's been half-finished SINCE BEFORE SEASON 2!!
Random episode thoughts:
Spoiler...Twilight, I appreciate it when you talk nerdy to me, but I've never seen an anemometer that looks...
...Oh, wait. Right, schizo tech. Me and my fancy electronics...
There are approximately 91 pegasi in the Ponyville area, for the minimum record-breaking power output, using Dash's claims (RD tips it over the 910 mark by already beating the average 10.0 power).
Dash definitely has a mare-crush on Spitfire. Maybe not to the degree of hero worship that Scoots puts out, but it's definitely there. Fluttershy is definitely one of her best pals, though...
...Wait, WHAT?! Angel can be NICE!? Tell me that's a different bunny!
And Fluttershy really can converse with otherwise unintelligible animals. Definitely a druid. Let's see when she learns Wildshape... :smalltongue:
RD's loyalty (and/or the writer's implied support of Flutterdash) is coming through here. Beating the record is great, but she'd rather do it with Fluttershy.
Just watched the new episode.
SpoilerFluttershy workout was funny.
Responding to the last part of that
SpoilerOne aspect of this plot that was interesting is that Rainbow Dash's goals were never in conflict. At all points of the episode, Fluttershy was capable of contributing to aid the overall effort, just less than she wanted to the point that it could have been embarrassing. So for Rainbow, it's a no-brainer: Fluttershy should participate because that way they get to work together asthe show's one true pairingclose friends and whatever record they make would be higher with Fluttershy than without her.
I could easily see making this exact same premise into a Rainbow Dash episode if one wanted to do so. Just make Fluttershy less nervous but have her actually be a hindrance rather than a help to the project. Boom, instant tension for Rainbow Dash who suddenly has to choose between letting Fluttershy participate and advancing her goal of getting the highest record.
Haven't disappeared yet, New episode...
SpoilerIs pretty good.
Rainbow can't math very well apparently, that or she's just too optimistic about how much she could improve her crew in such a short time.
New episode initial thoughts:
SpoilerThat was a pretty solid episode. Nice to see some more of the mystical side of Equestria back again! Angel was being unusally behaved, too... (I think he totally deserved that smack into the tree though...)
I stand by the superpowers comment, Fluttershy aside, since thet one pony was lifting 1000 units barbells (and I bet it wsn't grams..!) And even Fluttershy accidently managed to crash through a tree at under 2.3 wingpower...
Lot of new characters - and a lot of Derpy in the background, huuzah!
Wonder how long it'll be before somebrony starts calcualting the physics numbers...!
Also nice to see the ponies acting in a fashion that was not unreasonable jerks for once. I suspect those pegasus girls that giggles at Fluttershy might have been a bit taken aback, given how badly reacted (as they didn't strike me as being malicous about it - because let's face it Fluttershy is naturally funny...
Also BonBon has one, possibly two twin pegasus sisters... Pony genetics at work? You decide!
Also, when Dash was grabbing Fluttershy, when she said she'd do it, I thought to myself "so many ponies are go to totally take that out of context...
And now back through the thread to catch up. (As I'm posting at my mate's house, where I'm spending the weekend, and we've spent most of the playing a mod on Civ IV, which among other things, allowed me to play to play as Undead...!)
New episode! (I'm early this week, wow)
Spoiler
Was great. I love flutters and even though it was REALLY predictable I still had lots of fun. I wish there'd have been some twist at the end but meh...
I'd like to say the show doesn't support Flutterdash shipping... but it so does!
No matter what anypony says, Spitfire should have helped out. It was an important thing to do. Nobody would have gained anything if it failed. Yeah, she was just there to check on it but it was still an important thing to do.
What else... the training montage was fun... must have been some of those super strong butterflies that saved Flutters back in the days.
... maybe it's just me but... that sounds dirty.
New episodeSpoilerOh, there have been enough spoofs, parodies and allusions (especially in cartoons) to those things to be recognisable; and besides, that style is hardly unique to America (a lot of British stuff on the same a slightly earlier era was just as silly...)
SpoilerYes, I agree (no weak points (except maybe Spitfire not joining in, but as has been discussed, that is possibly debatable), though conversely, nothing was really extremely funny either; it was a good, solid episode overall), and very much yes...
S2E22
SpoilerWasn't she going for 1000 WP? That would indicate 100 pegasi in Ponyville. That also implies that more than twenty pegasi got infected by the feather flu. That assumes that total WP is just the sum of everyone's individual WP, which is implied by in the climax.
S2E22
SpoilerWhy would anyone need to do that when we've got a perfectly servicable scene where Rainbow Dash desperately exclaims that she "needs" Fluttershy while melodramatic music plays in the background?
S2E22
SpoilerI can accept that Spitfire's staying out of it because it's mostly a matter of Ponyville's pride; Cloudsdale has enough pegasi of its own to generate tornadoes if they fail.
On an unrelated note, is it just me, or does that pegasus with the bow sound a lot like Spike?
Spoileryou know, if i still had a soul, this episode would be touching.
also, must ship flutterdash, so much
SpoilerA good part of that minute or so is perfect for out-of-context videos. Consider that Fluttershy runs off crying that she does not have the "courage" to do "it". Dash then waches her run away, then kicks the ground and sulks off. Next thing we see is Fluttershy getting help from hersassy hairdresserpet rabbit.:smalltongue:
SpoilerShe's going for 1k WP, but she said that in order to break the record (which was ~910 WP), they'd need to each put out 10 WP each.
Also, nonlinear WP output would mess up the entire episode in terms of kid friendliness. They'd need a scene of Twilight running dimensional analysis on test tornadoes, staying up all night running the math because Equestria doesn't have computers to do that for her...
...Also, abacus.
SpoilerSearch your feelings, you know it to be true!
That sound you are hearing everypony? Its Australia. Crying in joy that a season 1 box set is coming to their country.
You may also be hearing my cries of jealous angst.
