Saw my paternal grand-parents for the first time as a woman. It went well. I didn't get gendered correctly, but they used the right name and they were nice with me. Also, they thought I looked like my female cousin on my graduation picture.

Writing a letter is a good ploy. You can show it in person if you prefer. Or you can give them in a sealed enveloppe, and invite them to a get-together at the same time.

It's funny, but when I hear Dutch I get the feeling that it's on the edge of understanding...

I will need a ride, so... yeah.

Well, thank you everyone for the suggestions. I like the physical letter idea, it feels a lot more 'real' than a simple facebook message, yet not so terrifying as the gathering everyone in one room idea. I think I'll go with that.

Now that I think about it, I don't think that showing pictures on the internet would raise the chance of being kiddnapped up very much without any other relevant information.... its not like a kidnappers going to stalk and kidnapyou just because they saw a random picture on the internet right?
I'm going to keep my pictures off for other reasons, but still.
And not to make you feel bad Pringle, you look great!

I've mentioned that I'm a criminal defense attorney. Since February, I've been working in a paid Fellowship for a local Public Defender's Office. The Fellowship program ends at the end of May.
I found out about 10 days ago that there is a permanent position opening at the office where I am working. Since I love the office, the people, and the work, I'm applying. I updated resume and cover letter, then gave them to a senior attorney in the office to review. (She's a friend and I know she supports me getting the job.) This weekend, I made the changes she recommended, and just uploaded my application.
And now the waiting begins. The posting closes Thursday at 5:00, so I have to wait until then. I know most (if not all) of the people there would like to see me stay. But the one person that matters is the Public Defender herself - and I don't know her take on the situation. I'm pretty sure she likes me (she did offer me the Fellowship, after all), and I think I've done a good job working there. But I don't know what the competition looks like.
My biggest concern is certifications. The state where I'm licensed has 3 levels of certification in order to represent indigent clients. I have the cert to represent misdemeanor clients, but not felony or juveniles. As my father-in-law pointed out, it's possible a defense attorney with 2 or all 3 certs who is working in a rural part of the state would want to transfer to the urban/suburban area where I live. If the option is between me and someone with more certs, I'm not sure I'd come out on top. Especially since the attorney I'd be replacing has all 3 certs, and the attorney who does a lot of the juvenile work in the office is going on maternity leave at the end of June.
Yeah, so, happy..? :smalleek:

:smallfrown: Sorry for the drama bomb. I was just feeling alone, and... my problems are so far very much small compared to being harrassed, which I haven't yet heard any first hand, yet. And I do go out in public.... a little. But so far, I've only gone into three small restaurants. Nothing like walking around inside a grocery store, or at the mall or anything. Oh, and I rode my bike two miles with my breast forms in. But I didn't look to see if anyone was pointing at me.
Friday, a co-worker did whisper into another co-worker's ear, and she (the 2nd) turned to look right at me with something like fear and not wanting to miss seeing what the 1st had witnessed. It made me kinda laugh .
My question was about name changing. See? Small. I want to change my name to Alexia Katarina. I love the name. It makes me feel beautiful. :smallfrown:
My birth name is Bobbie. Yes, on my birth certificate I am Bobbie, not Robert. :smallwink: I find it slightly amusing, since generally speaking, Bobbie is the feminine spelling of the name. It was like I was born to feel this way. But anyway, I was named after my Grandfather, name spelled exactly the same way. And it's one of the things my mother objects to, me legally changing my name to Alexia.
My mother has stated that I will always be Bobbie to her, which I understand. I just asked that she not call me such in public. To which she said 'no'. She gets real emotional about it, and again, I understand why. So I was thinking, that I could name myself Alexia Katarina Bobbie ______. But, it just doesn't roll off the tongue. It's not beautiful. I would hate it. Which I guess answers my question. But I was just wondering how you guys felt. And then I started feeling unworthy and alone. Again, sorry. :smallfrown:

Pictures are fine, as long as you don't give out any other pertinent information. But you have to be careful. Because sometimes even small things can help pervs figure out where you are. Just make sure not to reference your school, or the name of the city you live in.

I think all those names are pretty, but if you can't put in the "Bobbie" I understand. Did you choose Alexia Katarina together? That might be why it feels wrong to have "Bobbie" invade on it. Try this, imagine a favorite fictional charecter? Got one? Good, now change their name to something else. Can you do it? keep going. Once you assign a name to something it gets hard to change it. Maybe after a while "Bobbie" will roll off the toung like a hot pepper. Just give it some time okay? No need to make decisions yet right?

Your problems are not "small". Your mother not wanting to use your preferred name in public is quite an issue, really... It's an invitation for random strangers or less random acquaintances to misgender you and also use the wrong name. Or it may out you as trans and expose you to unpleasant things, which I hope you won't have to experience.

Hum, if she doesn't use the name you want, your mother is not recognizing your identity. When she says it, it will be ambiguous, because it sounds the same as "Bobby". If she uses the name in public and people hear it as the later, whatever consequences their might be will be on you. Being emotional about it is fine. Not using it in public? No. Your parents influence people around them, and she'd effectively interfere with how other people perceive you, imposing her own idea of you on you and them.
You're right to want to be called with the name of your choice (even if it's normal she feels strongly about it). You have the right to have your identity recognized. I'm sure your mother will understand at some point -- maybe not now, but give it some time. Eventually, if she's the only one to use the wrong name, she'll get in line.
My mother did the same thing at some point, with bizarre reasoning behind it, but at some point, she caught on. Of course, my name was entirely masculine, so it's different, but still.
And your name is beautiful
