Indie Thread VII: Kids In a Basement Drinking 40s Trying to Look Cool
Indie Thread
VII
Welcome to the latest iteration of this refuge of all things lofi and DIY, if not punk rock. No enthusiasm allowed.
Let's establish some ground rules:
The Breeders are better than Pixies.
The Olivia Tremor Control is better than Neutral Milk Hotel.
Sebadoh is better than Dinosaur Jr.
Guided by Voices is better than Pavement.
Indie Rock ended in 2002 with Source Tags and Codes, anything after that is Fake Indie and should be mocked.

I don't even really know who that is.

Me neither. It must be something obscure, known only by true cultists.
edit: all hail the new thread!

The Enterprise don't start 'til we walk in. Also lol. That guy has a super long, super poorly rated discography.

Thanks for providing me with a very amusing couple of minutes
Although you kinda have to feel bad for the guy. All he wants to do is make some meaningful music, and all that's standing in the way of that is his apparent lack of talent.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
I can sympathize, but still, damn. Reverend J.R. Preston of Tjolgtjar is similar. He makes a lot of BM and really cares about it and has some crappy releases, but at least a good chunk of his music is good.

Oh my, let me count the levels of irony....

So Sonata Arctica has been streaming their new album. Gotta say, I'm sad that it didn't impress me more. Only the Broken Hearts (Make You Beautiful) is pretty good, as are Cinderblox and the two Wildfire songs. Besides that though...meh.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Sonata Arctica has been rather mediocre for a while, (weighing in the fact that that particular aspect of metal doesn't appeal to me, so looking at it objectively is a tad bit difficult).

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
I reviewed the latest Lunar Aurora on my blagh. For those of you who haven't touched it but might be interested, I've also reviewed the newest Sigh and Revenge thus far.

Yeah, they haven't exactly been great since Unia. Still, I was hoping for some change. They show an ability to write good songs, they just don't seem to be able to carry it through a full album.

Well, it is Sonata Arctica.

I've never been a particular fan of that really wussy power metal for that reason. ;\

Agree with you there. However, power metal doesn't have to be wussy.
Also, found a cool unsigned prog metal group, Watershine. Check 'em out.
Their demo.
The instrumental version.

Anyone fans of Eluveitie?:smallamused:

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Eluveitie have never really impressed me. Turisas have always been more impressive, even though recently they seem to be reveling in their success a little too much.
For those who are unfortunate enough to be in the hot Californian sun, here is something to help you stay frostbitten.

I haven't listened to much Eluveitie, but I do know that Of Fire, Wind & Wisdom is an outstanding song.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Hey all. Even though I listen to a lot of stuff these days, I still consider myself a metalhead at heart. I'm an old fart though, so don't expect me to be up-to-date on all of it

Manticora are one of those bands that I'll pass through when looking through youtube for new music, and just not really register until someone specifically points them out to me. I like what I'm hearing, now that I'm bothering to pay attention.
Pharaoh have been on my list of things-to-listen-to-more-of for a while. I've been fond of Tim Aymar since hearing his work in Control Denied.
It would also be remiss of us not to mention that Iced Earth are still the biggest and meanest in the Power Metal playground.
Blind Guardian used to be a bit more aggressive than they've been on their past few albums, but even with the recent pepperings of prog/symphonic/synth elements in the music, they still have a fair bit of bite.
On the more obscure front, Persuader are solid, the album that Pyramaze did with Matt Barlow was pretty cool, and Cellador are decent.

So me and my friend decided to create a band after spending some time together at a band camp (in the words of my friend "you can sing, i can play lets go!"). So far its coming along really well. We have two finished original songs and ideas for more, mostly folky death metal, as well as some really sick covers; Phantom of the Opera (nightwish version) and The Trooper.
Nothing really serious, one or two afternoons a week, but i think we sound really good. We are looking at eventually getting some gigs once we have a few more songs, but there aren't too many all ages venues around my city and we are both too young to drink (technically :smalltongue:)
I was wondering if the Metal Thread had any words of wisdom about making metal.
