Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Welcome to twentieth GitP thread for Hearthstone. For anyone who doesn't know, Hearthstone is a video card game from Blizzard, based on the Warcraft series. The game is free to play and available here, so if you're interested, give it a shot. You've got nothing to lose but your free time. :smallwink:
For new players, something to be aware of is that there are a number of hidden "quests" you can complete which will give you free gold, dust, or even a pack. A complete list can be found here. Be aware that not quite all of those are ones you'll be able to complete quickly though.
And here is a list of Playgrounders currently in the game, for both NA and EU servers:

I haven't run into a single patches deck in the brawl, yet. How am I supposed to counter patches decks when I'm not seeing any?

There's only three ways the card was likely to get balanced.
1) Increase number of bounces.
2) Increase mana cost of Crystal Caverns.
3) Decrease the stats on the quest.
Of the 3, I think 1 was the best. Increasing the mana cost makes the Rogue win if they have Preparation and lose if they don't have it. Decreasing the stats is very hard to balance - if you don't do it by enough it's pointless, and if you nerf the stats too hard the entire deck becomes non-viable even if the quest is completed.
Increasing the bounces by one is the best compromise. It slows the quest down a bit, doesn't allow cheating like Preparation, and keeps the explosive lategame power. It just makes it less likely for the Rogue to be completing the quest on turn 4, which I don't think was ever intended.
Of course, I may be a bit biased here since I hate Quest Rogue with a passion. Regardless of balance it is the least fun deck to play against I have ever seen, even including OTK Warrior. The Rogue just sits there playing solitaire without even trying to interact with your board, and then suddenly explodes and you have no chance of winning.
I agree, Quest Rogue was one of the annoying decks to play against; the other really annoying deck I hate is Freeze Mage.
However, I think Quest Rogue was a pretty skill intensive deck to play properly, especially if the Quest Rogue doesn't get the god draw of a couple shadowsteps + prep. There are a lot of interesting lines of play I see from people like Kolento, who likes playing Firefly turn 1 instead of quest to contest the board against aggro decks.

Run forbidden healing? Counter priest as well which is nice and can survive pretty well against a few. I also ran dirty rat for a bit but that was pretty meh.

Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
With the new free packs promotion, anyone have advice on who to vote on?
While "best player" or whatever may very well be subjective, I'd imagine "just barely got in to this rank" might have lower odds of winning...
But I also don't keep track of competitive Hearthstone, so I don';t know who falls in to the
"just barely made it" category, if anyone.

Right, I don't have a problem with it being easy, or even particularly imbalanced from a meta perspective. It's a good deck that requires a lot of skill that can run into hard counters. From a pure competitive balance perspective, it's pretty decent.
It's just utterly painful to play against no matter what deck you're playing, and like Jade Druid last expansion it strangles out certain deck types in Ranked. With Jade Druid simply waiting for set rotation was sufficient, but there's no rotation on the horizon for Quest Rogue. Hence the nerf.

Jade Druid's still a good deck; it's just absolutely miserable against Quest Rogue and some of the Quest Rogue counters (Token Shaman, Aggro Murlock Paladin, Secret Mage). However, you can crush the soul of Quest Warrior, any kind of Burn Mage, and any kind of Priest that's not Silence.
Jade Druid's seen a lot and is more common in tournaments.

Personally, I'd just go with someone you want to root for. Last time we'd have told you to pick Thijs and he got one pack or Pavel and he only got one pack.
Looking at groups, I'm personally picking between Kolento (C9 player and someone I like watching on stream) and Muzzy (NA pride and he's supposedly good).
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Yeah, there's no one from Canada this time around, so I just picked Kolento because he was the only one I recognised.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
I don't think Quest Rogue will be dead because of that. But it's cards will shift towards Midrange a bit. Vanish was pretty popular in the decks anyway and I personally enjoyed the games vs. Quest Rogues where I legit had a chance. Example actually being a game with Dragon Lyra Spell Priest because the deck has enough discover effects and spell generation to keep up with the Quest Rogue as well as enough Tempo due to the Dragons present (and double/triple Dragonfire if needed).
But I think people on ladder will refrain from using Quest Rogue for a bit and either rush towards now playable Control decks or play the OTHER cancer that is Token druid.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Well, this is a one and done brawl for me.

wait, what free pack promotion? :smallconfused:
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Vote for some competitive guy and for every match they win during this event, you get a pack.
...but I also don't watch or read anything on competitive gaming, so I know virtually nothing. But if it seems unpredictable to people who do track this stuff, then I guess I'll go with a random pick.

You have until July 4th to pick one of 16 competitors and you'll get a number of packs between 1-4 depending on how far they advance. You're guaranteed a minimum of at least 1, so feel free to pick someone at random.

Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
It'll be interesting to see what effect the Quest Rogue nerf has on the game. Maybe there's a way to make it less auto-fail against aggro, and it'll morph into a more rounded deck. That's the best case scenario, admittedly. My current deck has redundant bounces, so 5 is perfectly doable. Just that it will take one bounce more than usual and that could be a big deal. We'll have to see.
My dust is all but depleted at this point, and I'm not looking forwards to crafting another rogue deck.

I already use a slightly anti-Aggro bent to mine, with Bilefins summoning taunts. May need to drop my Engineers for Glacial Shards, but we'll see how it goes.

Also known as "pick the guy that has been doing the best recently, then watch them crash and burn in their first two matches".
Last couple times I picked people from other countries based on how good they were, and they sucked. This time I'll stay loyal and pick someone from the US in the hopes of averting my horrible luck.
I don't even remember getting my packs from the last couple tournaments. They were only one or two packs each so I think they just kinda got lost in the free packs from set rotation/new expansion.

Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
I just had what was possibly the greatest Brawl matchup of all time. Crystalline Oracle mirror. I don't know what his 8 non-oracle cards were, or what mine were. I know he had Lyra, Holy Nova and Mind Vision. Excavated Evil got involved somehow, from somewhere. Probably me. I had an Auchenai and the priest C'thun guy. It was madness. Absolute brilliant madness. By the end of the game both our hands were nothing but excavated evils and holy nova. I won by fatigue.
Needless to say, I got my 'play deathrattles' quest done.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Well I tried to clear a win daily in the Tavern Brawl. Though random, you can usually tell how the match will go in a few turns (or even just the first card) so the games tend to end quick.
Saw a few people messing around with Kabal Courier. Didn't go so well for them, even when I was playing weird things like the 1/2 Combo Cultist (for a Combo daily).
Patches was pretty much autowin in a lot of cases. Even when I was running Voidwalker, the enemy still won. Though that was a close one. The one time I tried Patches the enemy conceded before I knew what their card was. So I decided to not be that guy and simply hope I got a good match if I conceded enough games. Not even sure what counters Patches in this meta.
Other decks I ran into were Explosive trap, Mind Blast/Sinister Strike face decks, Jade Druid and those 1/1 buffwolves. I think somebody actually tried that 2/1 with the divine shield deathrattle, but I was playing Forbidden Ritual and they conceded.

I have large numbers of duplicate minions, the Fire Elemental package (2x Igneous, 2x Fire Fly), and six bouncers. I still sometimes have trouble getting to four bounces during the early turns. Having to draw into three of those bouncers probably breaks the deck. As one person put it, you're giving it a 25% nerf on its trigger condition, just like what happened to Molten Giant (which no longer sees play).
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
I ran patches for the one and done. Got into a mirror match; so thankfully didn't intrude on anybody else's fun too badly.
I was Mage with Patches against a Warrior with Patches. Was actually a surprisingly close match with a lot of back and forth, nearly lost due to one of his random 8 being an Armorsmith, but I wound up pulling a Hazael from Unstable portal, which gave the extra health cushion and board presence needed to swing the game. It helped that like 3 of his 8 were weapons (I saw an Ogre Warmaul, Fool's Bane, and Tentacles for Arms, so not even any really good weapons out of that). All in all, not something I'd play again, but surprisingly fun considering I deliberately played the scumbag deck to get it over with.

My favorite game of this expansion was against a quest rogue with my dragon priest deck. He never overplayed his hand because he knew what he was going against. What he didn't count on was me playing dragonfire potion FOUR times (shadow visions is the bomb, like literally in this case) and Ysera Awakens once.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
only reliable counter I have seen to patches so far is priest using power word glory as his picked card..and just never kill a patches..you will stabilize around 8-10 hp and then you just fatigue him

You should keep the Novice Engineers because you'll need that card draw to get your bounce effects.
You should cut one of your 1 drops for Glacial Shard; Glacial Shard is stupid good at delaying aggression from medium size creatures. I've seen people cutting Swashburgler because it draws Patches before you get the 5/5 or Hungry Crab now that Murlocs are not as oppressive anymore.
I think we might see more of the defensive Elemental Package from Quest Rogue (if it even still sees play). I saw people like Kolento playing Tar Creeper and Stoneshaper to protect against aggro. Bilefin is also a solid choice.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
I missed the Patches train by getting my brawl in early, I picked Babbling Book, my opponent went with Naturalize. I didn't even get to fatigue by the time I burned him out.

thanks, wasn´t aware of it.
As for the brawl, I´ve been running curse of raafam and it seems to be doing really well against card generating picks, haven´t found a patches deck yet but this one clearly loses to it.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Ran into a Shaman running Maelstrom Portal as his Patches counter. Generally solid... except against Jade Idol, which is what I was using.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
I needed 30 mage cards for a quest, so I crafted Glyphs. Went into Mirror. Bad news, I lost. Good news, I finished my quest in one go.

I'd already been running Southsea Deckhand over Swashburglar (because 5/5, get a random card is way worse than getting a 5/5 charger that can summon a 5/5 charger), as well as Bilefin (not just because it stalls aggro, but because it puts two 5/5s on the board post-quest. And double Glacial Shard. And I still struggled against aggro.
If Quest Rogue didn't figure out how to deal with aggro before, it won't figure out now.

15 minutes ago Blizzard Korea shared that July 7th will be the announcement of the next expansion.

Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Warning: Random jumble of thoughts
Anyone else get really bored because of the rank system? I know climbing to legend is pointless because it's many hours of my life that go away at the end of every month, so I just go up to rank 5 because that's a reasonable amount of playtime for one month. I'd feel way more incentivized to climb the ladder if I didn't feel like it was just running up the down escalators. Sure, each month I can make progress, but Hearthstone isn't a deep or rewarding enough game to justify the amount of time it would take to go from rank 5 to legend.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
*shrug* I haven't even been to rank 5 in quite a number of months. I'll play a handful of games per week at this point, partly to do quests, partly for Brawl, partly just for fun, and that's about it. I haven't thought much about my rank ever since I decided that it would take too long to reach legend, and even reaching rank 5 for the end-of-month golden epic hasn't felt worth it since maybe the second month after that reward system was introduced.
I do play ranked when I play, but basically because I don't have a reason not to. Ranked offers minor rewards, but casual offers none.

I hit Legend once to prove that I could. Other than that, I hit Rank 5 regularly for the reward and don't really have to play more than what's necessary for daily quests. Any decks I don't feel are top tier or I don't know how to play well I play in Casual until I master it so I don't disturb the win streaks I build up.
I know there's a level of Hearthstone that I haven't hit in that I don't play Control decks or Combo decks particularly well; I'm more of a tempo/aggro player. Whenever I see streamers play something like Miracle Rogue or Quest Rogue, they often make lines of play that I don't see or wouldn't do.
The monthly ladder reset does feel like bad, especially for people who have to grind all the way to Legend every month.
P.S. Here's decklists for everybody playing in the HCT tournament so you can pick someone based on more than "hey, I like that guy!"

Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
I only play ranked, even if it's with a terrible daily quest deck (75 Murlocs? Challenge accepted!). I feel that Casual tends to have too many surprisingly serious decks, so it's not that much easier than Ranked. Unless you're high up the ladder, I suppose. The last time I went super try hard (as in, only playing my best deck in Ranked) I reached rank 10 and then realized you need rank 5 to get the epic at the end of the month. Then I stopped trying. So it's just Tavern Brawls and daily quests for the most part.
Inching closer to golden heroes is a motivating factor as well.

I am finally getting close to my first golden heroes. Both Warrior and Priest are now over 400, so working my way there slowly but surely.
But yeah I'm in the same boat as everyone else, basically playing enough to complete my daily quests, plus maybe a handful of extra games if I am having fun by the time the quest finishes (sometimes the quest is just such a drag I lose all interest, other times I'm on a roll and keep going for another 5-10 games). Highest I've pushed so far this way was rank 3. This month I'm currently hovering around rank 10, I kind of want to push towards 5 for the improved chest, but don't know where I will find the time in the next day and probably will not unless I get an awesome win streak during my playtime tonight.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
I generally get up to around rank 10, just from doing the quests and playing here and there for fun. The free stuff is a nice bonus, but getting to rank 5 is almost too much of a bother.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Dropped down to a safe 10 because people seem to only play Tier 1 decks in the last week of a season.
But I shall enjoy a laddering binge tomorrow during the saturday morning. Will prob a bly push my last hero to gold and will hace to resort to Quest Rogue before they rightfully nerf it. Alas 31 to go.

I climb up to 20 every month to get the card back, and that's it.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Last night's win record was a bit under 50/50, so looks like I am ending the season at rank 10 with 0 stars. Ah well, I will live without the extra dust.

That's pretty much it for me too, but that's because I've mostly fallen out of the game in favor of other competitive games.

So.... Is ice block any good in this brawl? As your card?

Not so much, TBH. You still die to fatigue, and it takes FOREVER.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
I'm not sure you could reliably trigger Ice Block before you fill up your hand with ice blocks you can't use.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Barring the 8 cards giving you something, you also have no way to kill your opponent. You just...sit there. The Iceblock decks worked in the Pick 2 because you had a burn spell to accompany it. Sooner or later, you just burned your opponent to death. To win with pure Ice Blocks, you have to ping 30 times. And thanks to fatigue, that simply isn't possible even if you don't consider only having 22 Iceblocks a hindrance to that plan.

With Patches anything, Jade Idol Druid, and Mind Blast Priest knocking on your door starting around turn 4-5, burning ice blocks that aren't triggering won't be the problem. Drawing one of the 8 other cards in your deck instead is.

So they're gonna be selling old packs and adventures again. Though they haven't confirmed(nor stated otherwise) if gold will be usable.

About time.

Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
All heroes in gold. Now I can finally ignore all classes except Mage. =)

Congrats! I'm still not level 60 in all classes. Currently gold in Warlock, Hunter, Warrior, and about 20 wins away from Mage.

That is a ton of ranked games. Wow. Especially with random classes. I play the meta, but way fewer games than are necessary to get gold heroes in most classes, even after years of consistent play. I think I'm maybe halfway there at best.
-
Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
Yeah, I've been playing since the beta (before golden heroes were a thing), and still no golden heroes here. Heck, I'm still not even to level 60 on my Rogue, since that class just hasn't had a competitive deck that I've liked yet, and my attempts at Rogue decks don't generally result in anything I play a ton of.
(Not to 60 on Hunter either, but I'll never be much higher than I am now on that, since I don't play it except when Brawl gives me no other choice, which I think has only happened once.)

And of all those times I never hit legendary. =/ It's really not THAT hard over the course of years.
GvG Tempo Mage, Zoolock and Midrange Hunters sort of played themselves towards gold.
Shaman was my first golden hero (back in 2015 me thinks so before the whole Tunnel Trogg aggro thingie) because I REALLY love the fact that classic Shaman lives and dies with board control. Old Paladin lends itself to Midrange (my favorite playstyle) and Druid has a few interesting archetypes and aggro beast druid was and is disgusting. :D Priest and Rogue were a [female dog] to level though. Warrior was very enjoyable (first 350ish games were controlish, last 150ish were Midrange Dragon Warrior).

If I hadn't found Black Desert Online as my new time sink in gaming, I would probably go for Legend this season. Because I like the cardback and also I want the validation. But alas, I am VERY driven by cosmetic unlocks such as this. It still makes me mad that I couldn't buy Khadgar due to not having an Apple device. I have probably spent 500-800 Euros on HS over the course of the years. And different than buying HotS heroes and WoW subscriptions/expansions I do not regret the money spent here.
Just saying: I am probably a far more aggressive nerd than you. I am one of those netdecking try-hards. =)

Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
I've got Rogue Quest card and I've looked up a budget rogue quest deck and put ti together best I can um......tried it some and I want to be good with it but I kept losing, any advice on how to do it better? Because other decks keep outpacing me and buffing up their monsters too fast for me to respond or control the situation effectively.

Many decks run counter cards or entire strategies to counter Quest Rogues. You have to play....patiently. Always have your duplicating card in hand. Know which card you want the counter to go to 4 with. As all rush decks the mulligan is extremely important.

Share your list? The deck is pretty budget generally, but if you're making substitutions, it could really be hurting you. The difference between getting 3/4 and 4/4 a turn earlier is huge for quest Rogue.
As some general advice, mulligan for the things that give you extra cards, return to hand effects, or flame elementals. A starting hand with quest, shadowstep, apprentice brewmaster is great. So is one with 2x Fire Fly, or even Fire Fly and Novice Engineer. What you don't want are boars and pirates clogging up your hand right away. Those are 5/5s later, but if you've got nothing else, you'll have to waste them to help keep the board clear.
You want to aim to complete the quest quickly, but not at the expense of screwing yourself. If you need to return something to your hand to complete the quest, don't leave it naked on the board to get killed, hold it for another turn. Making a dagger turn 2 because you don't want to play your novice engineer yet is fine if you're holding 3 ways to return that novice engineer to hand. On the other hand, if you've got 2 novice engineers in hand, play the first one immediately and pressure the opponent to kill it.
Once you complete the quest, never play it into an unknown mage secret. Try to hold onto a prep to check for counterspell. Once you've played it, think about what removal the other person has. Against priest, who has dragonfire potion, you don't flood the board. Instead, you play 2-4 guys, just enough to put heavy pressure on them. Especially since you can have a couple charge guys in hand (or charge guy plus bounce) to turn 3 cards on board into a one turn kill. Against Mage, do not choke your board with more than 5 cards. They'll frost nova and you'll wind up dying with a bunch of charge guys in hand that you can't play because your board is full. Against warrior, don't overcommit into brawl. Against druid, play everything you have as fast as you can.
Hope that helps.

From a more cynical perspective, it sounds like you might be queuing into Aggro decks like Aggro Druid, faster Token Shamans, Aggro Murloc Paladin, and Pirate Warrior. These decks have extremely favorable matchups against Quest Rogue, which is noted for its heavily polarized matchups. These Aggro decks are in fact a big part of the meta because of their strong performance against Quest Rogue. There is only a limited amount you can do to improve your deck's chances against these fast aggressive decks.
If you aren't playing it, put 2 copies of the 1 mana 2/1 battlecry freeze a minion elementals into your deck and mulligan for them against decks you suspect will be aggressive, especially those that are likely to rely on mid-sized minions or giant weapons to deal their damage. Bouncing this minion several times can prevent damage while advancing your quest completion. This is less useful against decks that kill you with wide boards + buffs like Token Shaman and Aggro Druid.

Depending on what exactly you mean by that, I may be too. I do typically use deck lists taken from what's known to be effective in the current meta - I find I like playing the matches, not so much building decks, so I'd rather have something that I know works than something that I made myself. And I certainly try to play as well as possible at any given time.
That said, I'm neither super-competitive nor a completionist - I gave up on getting to legend a long time ago simply because of how much time I would have to put into the game in a single month to get there, and I don't try to collect all of anything, whether that's cards, golden heroes, alternate heroes, card backs, whatever.

Is it the nerfed version yet?
You're basically playing as much stall as possible until you get your bounce combo together, which is usually a pair of identical minions plus enough bounces to get your total plays together. At that point, you aim to overwhelm their board with your board, using chargers (Southsea Deckhand and Stonetusk Boar) to remove enemy minions and deal bursty face damage.

No, the nerf isn't out yet. We're waiting until at least after HCT, which is this weekend, because some of the players have brought quest rogue.

Re: Hearthstone 20: What is your Quest?
You know... I actually really like that stonetusk is finally seeing play, even if it's in a niche/gimicky deck.
