Re: Have anyone tried this?
Isn't this the exact premise of Easy Lee's Breaking Beastmaster thread?

This is true, and although I think Easy Lee was completely wrong here, many people did this. There are way better ways to use the Beastmaster.
Re: Have anyone tried this?
i'd sooner use a str class with a str race if i wanted to use a str weapon, and have a large mount to give me advantage half of the time with the mounted combat feat.

the idea with a small race is that your mount is medium tho letting you take it inside dungeons and stuff easily I think. :)

It's that you can't choose a large creature as a beastmaster companion, so you have to choose a small race if you're going to ride the companion. Beastmaster is restricted to medium or smaller CR 1/4 beasts.

That too ofc, just a medium mount fits in more places too which is a bonus. :)
Re: Have anyone tried this?
Bit off the topic but if you cast awaken on your animal companion what exactly would happen as per raw? :)

Intelligent ridden creatures can either be controlled or uncontrolled. If they are controlled they act on your initiative, do what you want and can only dash, disengage or dodge. Basically the same as not being awakened. If they are uncontrolled then they act on their own initiative, do whatever they want regardless of your input and can take any action, including attacking.
