Dark Shadow's Surprisingly Well-Lit Random Banter #217
It doesn't have an alliterative title, but, here's a new Random Banter. Apparently I'm supposed to say something here, so... play nice, enjoy each others company, and... follow the rules, I guess. I don't really know that there's much more to say that can't be said better by anyone else.
Let's all have a good chat, then. :smallcool:

Random Rules for a Random Banter
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.
2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.
4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.
12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.
13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.
14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.
15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.
Re: Dark Shadow's Surprisingly Well-Lit Random Banter #217
Huzzah. On the topic that we left off on...
I both like and don't like my new job. Lotta walking, lotta "my feet are flat and it feels like my calve bones are gonna burst from my legs" feeling, but overall actually good?
Re: Dark Shadow's Surprisingly Well-Lit Random Banter #217
It's nice that it's good, at least. And, hopefully the leg situation'll get better, as time goes on and you get used to it. But, yeah, I understand you on the feet pain especially. The non-slip shoes that I have to wear are not made for walking in...

That's nothing. I've been listening to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhU5dSZZfSc for about three days straight now because it's the best cover I've ever heard of the theme.
In other news, so my sunday D&D group (I run three groups) has complimented me on my gaming style and one of them said "You should start up a patreon, and run seven groups, one for each day of the week. You've got a guy streaming your stuff with quality equipment, so why not?" Then my saturday group this evening said the same thing.
Seven groups of five players each in a shared universe? Uhhhhhh...
Let's see. I'd have to heavily streamline my homebrewed rules (which are extensive)...
... I'd have to find seven groups of people that wouldn't be *******s or "immature kids" (like most of my saturday group) to both me and each other...
... I'd have to advertise decently (something I'm quite terrible at when I'm not mumbling about it here)...
... I'd have to make sure their paths don't cross because such things would be a nightmare to resolve if it went to something other than combat...
... I'd have to make maps for every city and town in the world (all 40+ major locations) for lore/background reasons... (I was considering this part once, and have various discords and forums hop on a stream and dictate how a city was built based on themes)...
... I'd have to design patreon rewards even though I have no artistic talent, talk like a stroke victim, and sound like a kid with too much sugar in his system...
... I'd have to set up my camera and be live, and I don't "photograph well"... (I don't do video, only audio streams)...
... I'd have to keep the guy streaming my games happy, else I lose the stream...
... I'd have to figure out what music to use so said stream wouldn't be flagged for copyrighted works...
And a host of other things.
While I'm flattered that my players love me... seven days a week asking for money? Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah, no. D&D is play to have fun, not play to make money, donations be damned.

You may want to consider different shoe inserts or nice cushiony socks if you can make either work with the required shoes. I used to always wear fancy hiking socks on the days I had 3 hour choir rehearsals in the evening because the extra cushion and support made standing for an extra three hours feel better.
I now have a variety of foot and ankle issues that mean I wear custom orthotics in hiking boots with good ankle support whenever I leave the house, so I'm really only loosely in touch with the world of "things normal people wear on their feet" these days. (On the bright side, my very expensive hiking boots last for years and can be resoled when needed, so I haven't had to go shoe shopping in a very long time.) Luckily, I live in the Pacific Northwest, and there are enough people here who wear hiking boots as a fashion statement and/or lifestyle choice that I'm not seen as too odd for doing so.

There was an old Scout Handbook in the house when I was a lad (no idea who'd been in the Scouts) and I recall it advising to wear two pairs of socks when hiking. The idea is that the inner pair moves with your feet while the outer pair moves with the shoes/boots, so less chance of causing blisters due to chafing the skin.

I'll keep that in mind, look into it. I don't think I'll go the cushiony sock route, if only because I get far too warm at the best of times, but looking at inserts would probably be a good idea.
Also, hello from elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest!

There was some discussion sorta related to this last thread. Let's see... Ah, here we go:

The figure for threads #170-189 is the mean average of all threads from #90-189, truncated here for space. Figures assume that all threads went to the maximum number of posts (i.e. 1500, except thread #200, when it was 3000). Figures for thread #216 are taken up to the end of 26th May BST.
Looks like, with an average of 100 Posts/day for the busiest, taken to 1500ish posts, it'd be 15 days.

Aed is a cool guy, and is a tabulator after my own heart. I miss when I had time to interact in the same projects as him. It was fantastic...
But so is being married, so I suppose there's nothing to complain about.:smallwink:

You can actually buy "sock liners" for this purpose. (They are really thin socks designed to go inside hiking socks. I got mine at REI, but I pretty much get everything related to being outdoors at REI.) Back when I was first breaking in my boots, I was using anti-chafe stuff (looked like deodorant), sock liners, and socks. (And duct tape over the blisters I had going from before I bought the aforementioned sock liners and anti-chafe stuff.) Now that my boots have been beaten into submission, I just wear a single pair of hiking socks and no sock liners. (I know it is the boots and not my feet that got broken in because when I bought a second pair of identical boots I had the whole thing to do over again. This is another reason to buy resole-able boots if you plan on wearing hiking boots a lot.)

I eventually ended up with custom orthotics from a podiatrist (I developed a sesamoid lesion that made it painful to walk, then later got some that were also designed to help with my ankle problems) but there are certainly a variety of things that you can buy on your own with various kinds of cushion and support. I think of this as the difference between people who need complicated prescription glasses and those who can get by the with the "readers" from the store.
Yay fellow Cascadian! I know there are a few of us around here. I would suggest trying to have a GiantITP meet-up at one of the local gaming cons someday, but I have yet to get to a local gaming con myself and really haven't had time to game in a long time. (Maybe this will be the year...)

Well, I'm certainly the former (for eyes, not feet). I can practically see the dollar signs in my optometrist's eyes whenever I need a new set of lenses, because they're pretty bad. :smallamused:

Unfortunately, traveling anywhere is a tad inconvenient for me, since I'm stuck on an island. A big island, with plenty of amenities, but it's a pain (and expensive) to have to leave it. :smalltongue:

Don't worry about the thread title not being alliterative.
It's not a very funny joke.
Re: Dark Shadow's Surprisingly Well-Lit Random Banter #217
Howdy folks!
On Saturday, I competed in my first strongman competition it was absolutely awesome! (Although probably not awesome enough to deserve it's own thread). In any case it was pretty awesome. I hadn't been able to train for it for about six weeks, so this was going in cold, which was a lot of nerves. I didn't zero any events though, which was pretty awesome, even the car walk which most folks zeroed I managed to complete, so that was pretty exciting.
The events were a deadlift for max weight with a 60 second time limit, max reps in the minute, with 50 lbs added per rep. I managed three there, but only got counted for two (I got excited and pulled before I was given the up command by the judge). A block press with four increasing weight blocks. I managed three, but had to press the first one twice (since again I got too excited to pay much attention.) I probably could have done a lot better there if I'd worked more on cleaning rather than just pressing. There was a car walk with a 60 second time limit. I had the car set too low and it kept dragging and they'd make me set it down and pick it up. I also apparently can't drive straight, since I veered off course and hit a cooler. I finished that in in just over 58 seconds, so right at the limit, 58.2 I think, but don't quote me on that. And then there was a pick and hold, 230 lbs per hand, I held for around 30 seconds, give or take. And then finally a keg load, but I'd burned myself out too much in the previous stuff to actually do well on that, also my technique was pretty awful.
In any case, if anybody's wondering how my lifting has been going since the Fitness in the Playground thread faded in obscurity there's your answer. And I'll be competing in more of these in the future, so I'm pretty excited about that. In any case that's probably enough bragging from me, I'm just completely excited about the whole thing.

I... don't know what you're meaning. Alliteration isn't a funny joke, or the current thread title?

Geez. That's quite impressive. :smalleek:
Any one of those things is admirable, but all of them together? You have my respect.

That one. That's the one I meant.

You're just saying that because your name can't be alliterated. :smalltongue:
In all seriousness, the title was refreshing and fun! Great job Dark.

Impromptu culinary arts - should get a patent on it:
Last weekend, was stuck in a meeting and didn't have time to get some groceries, so I had to raid my fridge, which is notoriously understocked.
Let me present you: The Hamburgerdon! *tush*
A "Don" is a kind of japanese dish that you eat from a bowl, but unlike the ongoing "one bowl" craze, it´s more something you´d actually have on a plate and look good than that mix in front of you.
So, basically:
Lower tier of the bowl: Sushi rice with green peas and Sake.
Middle tier of the Bowl: Japanese style cole slaw, roasted sesame and all that
Upper tier: Hamburger patty with Panko crust, deep fried and sliced to go with the chow sticks.
Top with: Tonkatsu sauce and hot mustard.

I'll have to try this. It sounds weird enough that I'll enjoy it, and nutritionally more sound than raw Chinese-style noodles eaten by the handful. :smalltongue:

Mmm hmm. Good lighting is important for productivity.

Ah, I see. I mean, I don't think alliteration is meant to be a joke. Just fun to say.

Thanks. (Even though I think you're over-complementing it.) Apparently the secret is having to come up with a title late at night. :smalltongue:

And important for casting shadows. :smallamused:
(Can't be too good, though. Otherwise there are none.)

Either way I wouldn't bother with it at all, honestly.
It's played out.

I end up doing that quite often, but I'm not much of a musical explorer and tend to run out of songs to pair together for a proper playlist.

Actually, we haven't had an alliterative thread since 2015 (I'm not counting the previous thread since it didn't alliterate on the creator's name). Not to negate the freshness in other aspects, just pointing it out.

Well, either the above confirms your statement or you have no idea of what you're talking about, seeing as there hadn't been an alliterative thread for over a year when you joined up. http://i.imgur.com/ZRHtTJs.png

I do explore. That's what makes this troubling.
