The OotS Soundtrack Project (is back!)
Hey guys,
I've been reading OotS since comics were back in the double digits, and I've connected with it a lot over these many years.
I've also been playing music for the past half-dozen years or so, and though I'm no maestro, I (and a bunch of you!) have written some OotS-inspired compositions us all to listen to and enjoy. If any of you want to take up my challenge and write a piece of your own, be my guest and share it here with all of us.
Current pieces:
Quarion Nailo:
Othesmo:
Incom:
ScubaGoomba:
Curtis:
The Underlord:
Jzadek:
Vesth:
Ninjadeadbeard:
petersohn:
Howler Dagger:
Drahcir:
Todd Ingram:- Familicide(Download) New!
Philip Engdahl:
Requests:
Malack's Theme- Redcloak's Theme
- Roy's Theme
- Linear Guild Theme
Composing Software:
- Noteflight. Online music editor. Simple, easy to learn, easy to share, free. Unfortunately, not very powerful, sounds very artificial.
- Musescore. More powerful music editor (though not online). Free. Much better than Noteflight, but probably a little more sparse than Sibelius or Cakewalk Sonar.
- Sibelius. Paid music editor. Very powerful, all-around capabilities.
- Cakewalk Sonar. Technically an 'audio workshop', it has very strong music creation abilities as well. Allows transcribing keyboard or electric guitar notes into MIDI files by plugging them into your computer, then recording. Also paid.
Possible Soundtrack Competition?

I'm considering holding some sort of "open call" for OOTS-themed music sometime in 2013. The details are still very fuzzy at this point, so I can't really answer any questions, but it's something I'm interested in trying. I'd probably put forth a series of categories (i.e. "Roy's Theme," "Xykon's Theme") and let people submit tracks in any or all of them, with a catch-all "Name your own theme," category. I'd select one from each category and put together an album, which we would distribute to the masses somehow (possibly involving money). Copyrights will stay with the creators, with probably some sort of distribution license for GITP.
I'm mostly telling you this because I know this stuff takes time, and I thought you might all be interested in playing around with it now. The only other thing I would add is that I don't want any lyrics; I'm looking for an instrumental soundtrack only.
So, I guess keep that in mind. Also, keep in mind that I haven't listened to any of the tracks posted here and am going to deliberately avoid doing so until then, so posting them here will in no way color my opinion, one way or the other.
(Oh, and this post is in no way a guarantee that I will get around to said project, or that I will do so in 2013, or that I won't change one or more of the ideas above. So don't hold it against me if you compose 300 hours of OOTS music and then I crap out on it. Compose at your own risk.)
I'll write more pieces as time allows. If you're interested in hearing some of my other tunes and ditties, you can find them here and here.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Oooh I love this idea! I will have to save this site and mess around with it sometime.
And I absolutely love your song! It's very fitting for Greysky City I think!
-
Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Nice track man! Although being honest it doesn't really evoke Greysky City to me; it sounds way too positive for that. Greysky is Not a Nice Place™, after all! The clarinet just doesn't fit that vibe to me. I really dig the tune anyway though.
I don't have time now but I'll definitely try and whip something up a bit later. It's a nice idea for sure.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
I'd be more interested in seeing themes for characters and particular moments then locations, personally.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
I think that the only right thing to do would be to put together a crack team of composers and musicians and release an album, kinda like what the Cave Story Remix Project people did. If this is going to happen, I want in.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Yes, the challenge of sleepy is currently being accepted now, so if someone seriously wants to get some people together, shoot me a PM.
-
Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
I'll see what I can get done.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Are we allowed to make specific requests?
-
Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Omg I love Head to Head @ laughed out loud when Thog's part started xD

If anyone wants to request a song (on a character, scene, location, anything), just let me know (PM or post).

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
The second one feels like a Monkey Island theme... :smallwink:

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Damn, I am having great difficulty getting past the "drum machine" vibe. Cymbals don't work well at all with electronic music...
However, the composition is very nice.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Dad GUM you are talented. Those are pretty sweet compositions.

This thread gives me hope.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Well these are rather brilliant! I must have a play with that, see what I can come up with...

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Hah! This is some neat stuff.
Well done and thanks for bring it to us.

I wrote lyrics to Elan's song from #692

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Hey guys,
I just finished Head to Head, so that means if anyone wants to request a song, now is the time, because it might be a while before some divine inspiration hits me next.
-
Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Request: Theme for one of the villains!
(redcloak is preferable because he's pretty great)
-
Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Hmm. Head to Head doesn't really sound like an epic fight with collapsing buildings and sudden OH **** moments to me. I think it could work for sometihng else, but as that fight... I dunno.
I like the other one though, it's cool.
Suggestions, hmm, Elan's leitmotif maybe. That'd be interesting.

Awesome!
The Greysky one made me think of two buddies (a pair of theives or maybe Haley and her daddy) walking around in the gloom, up to no good. That seemed to fit.
The other one didn't work as well for me, I think because the pitch and/or instruments didn't say "Big@ss Fighter and Bigger Half-Orc" to me. It was a perfectly fine tune, perhaps for Belkar battling waves of goblins, but for Roy & Thog I felt more like something a little deeper and slower seeming (but not really slower).
But hey there's no accounting for tastes. Play on!

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Upon some more listening, let me say I've a better appreciation for Greysky City now. SOme think it doesn't fit, but hear me out.
It strikes me as a sort of Guy Ritchie/Elmore Leonard caper beat underscoring a Robin Hood medieval theme. I love it.

Would that I could, if Noteflight could make music that epic. There are only a couple of actually decent instruments: guitar, piano, clarinet, drums, bass.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
Thanks for posting the link, I'm going to use this as an excuse to try composing out.
As for requests, can you try to make one for Roy's death at the hands of Xykon and/or the battle of Azure City?
Edit: Oh yeah, and, I'm obligated to tell you that you are made of pure win for thinking of this idea.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
I compose a little, but I generally compose for string pieces(mainly viola, since thats what I play). If anyone wants me to, I can see what I can make.

Hey, I play viola too! Unfortunately, Noteflight's strings are kinda crappy. The cello is ok, the violin mediocre, and the viola just plain awful.

Re: The OotS Soundtrack Project
So ScubaGoomba and I are interested in starting a full-scale project here, getting a whole bunch of different people involved and pumping out tons of music. You up for it OP?

What kind of composer would I be if I wasn't? :smallwink:
