Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
What do you guys think about my idea to make arcanic magic very science based? Part of the reason I did it, a large part, is that it really bothers me when people are anti-intellectual, or believe that science is bad. I honestly cannot comprehend why people hate science, or don't want to learn. I'm smart, and I know it. I know enough to realize how much I don't know, and that just makes me want to learn even more.
So when I was working on Aequar and I realized how easily I could make arcanic magic scientific in nature, a part of the universe that could be studied (even if at this point it's a bit too wild to be reliably controlled and fine-tuned) with research and labs and a consistent scientific method and make it something like this, I jumped at the opportunity.

Thirded!
I mean, I'm usually more for magic being magic and beyond any ordered intellectual approach in my fiction, but having it be a scientifically explorable element of existence is always quite interesting when done right. So yeah, very much thirded here.
But what implications does that have for spontaneous arcane casters? Sorcerers = X-Men? :smalltongue:

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
Christopher Walken would make a good Rust. He is awesome.

Milla Jovovich for Radic!
Alan Rickman and Patrick Stewart! Dunno who as, but they're too awesome not to be in it. :P

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
I'd go for Aidan Turner as Matt and Lenora Crichlow as Janine.
I'd like to get Russell Tovey in too but I can't think of a character that fits him.

Challenge: Whom would we cast Sean Connery as? :smalltongue:

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
Fourth-ed on the part about making arcane magic scientific. I think I might have seen that idea somewhere else...but since I can't remember from where, it's obviously not one of the stock tropes for this genre. Either way, I've seen a lot of works where magic is considered too vague and belief-based to be studied scientifically. It's nice to read something fresh like this.
I also think your "Detect Evil = Detect my Deity's Enemies" idea is interesting. Just make sure to include it in the comic so all the people who don't follow the thread posts will learn about it.

Best way to do that without 4th-wall-breaking (since there is no Detect Evil) would be to rename it Detect Deity's Foes (or similar).
For example:
Detect Foes of Astrid.
EDIT: Or have a divine caster explain to an arcane caster or noncaster that the spell "Detect Evil" is based on the point of view of a deity, not an objective "Evil". Make it part of a philosophical discussion, either in the background or off-panel besides those lines.

Neil Patrick Harris is almost 40 now! I always reckoned Matt to be one of the youngest characters, like in his late teens. For age reference, that makes Justin Beiber about the right age... :smalltongue:

We'll cast him as one of the civilian goblins who dies in Lloyd's flashback. Only it won't be acted. We'll really stab him.

And Sean Connery as Tinder's dad would be awesome. 'Course, whole movie would be about Tinder then. Wait, that's a good thing. Like Dragonheart!

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
How about Michael Bolton somewhere?

Tinder's dad! Of course! I can see it now... "Tinder - ORIGINS".
Also, is it me or does Johan as depicted on the first page of the thread look an awful lot like Lloyd pre-haircut, even by stick-figure-standards? :smallconfused:
-
Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
But then who would be played by BRIAN BLESSED?

I see what you did there. You're thinking of Dragonheart arn't you. That was a great movie. Wait a minute I say that about anything with Sean Connery.

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
I'm guessing that the spell/machine thing that Serrin is working on is a way to make the Fly spell stronger. I don't know much about DnD, but thanks to OotS, I know that Fly suffered a major downgrade between 3e and 3.5e. That would explain why it's a stronger spell in all the "stories", before the universe converted to 3.5e.

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
cough:notneeded:cough
:smalltongue:
(again going by D&D 3.5 ruleset)

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
Overland Flight?
Wings of Flying?
Hmm...
@^ Cloudkill is official 3.5 core, you're not proving anything by linking the SRD.
-
Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
It is a link to overland flight... I made the same joke as you :smallannoyed:
-
Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
Yeah, I'd agree. That's the second core spell that will be invented in-comic!

No, you weren't. You were responding to TPAY by saying that there already are ways. I was wondering what Serrin was inventing. Unless I misunderstood.
