Sweet! I can revisit my species idea of the Iquans!
(looks for old writeup)
As I said on the previous page, it's probably best to work out setting specific details before moving too deep into making aliens and such for it.
The Traveller universe had a huge spaceport on a fairly diverse planet where everyone started, and adventure hooks could be tossed at PCs. You could also go with a Deep Space 9 type space station as the hub.
In addition to the hub, the other important thing to work out is how faster than light travel works, because that impacts how the galaxy is being settled.
((I'm not likely to ever expand beyond the Nexus for my rp, but I've read a lot of space opera and sci-fi, so wanted to add my 2cp))
We could have a 40k-esque "Warp" thing that people used to travel through like portals through a chaotic plane that had the chance of making you insane or mutated, only put it in a less-serious setting and thereby use it humorously at times...
I think the problem with having ABSOLUTE freedom over where you go is that it quickly becomes too diffuse and decentralized... Space is BIG, after all. As Mr. Douglas Adams said, "Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."
Which means that either you end up with a bunch of closed-circle plots and interactions with small little grouplets of characters on one ship, mostly cut off from all the other little grouplets of characters on one ship, or else you have to trivialize space travel to the point where you might as well have not bothered with putting it in space at all... the only difference between that and the NEXUS is that you're traveling in a flying soupcan instead of in a car or on a horse.
Previously, I've toyed with the idea of having the setting be a 'wagon train to the stars' delio... the 'setting' would be a single large starship (much like the Enterprise-D) or even a small fleet of starships (the Battlestar Galactica approach) with locations within. Visiting new planets would be a setting-wide thing... every few weeks the ship would land at a new planet, and roleplay would ensue.
But even that approach is rife with its own problems. Space as a FFRP medium really is a hard one to pull off... this particular subforum is littered with the scattered remains of failed attempts.
But please, don't think I'm trying to squash discussion of it. Despite my cynical approach, I really would love it if we could pull off a working setting.
Edit: Multi-ninja'd! Content in above post may already be addressed by earlier posts...
Does anyone have a link to the old FFRP community thread? I think there's discussion on the setting over there, as well as discussion for a few other failed sci-fi settings... some good ideas there, that it might be worth taking a look at.
Edit: Found it... searching for relevant discussion...
Edit Edit: BOOM! Discussion underneath. Or not. I think that one post is about as far as it got... Searching for more...
Huh. I hadn't noticed this. I would be a large fan of the idea. Science fiction is the best flavor of fiction. The idea of one large ship or a space station or a large convoy or somesuch always running from some obviously unstoppable force would be a good one for keeping things science fictiony, while still keeping everyone relatively close to each other. Stopping at various planets and finding them inhospitable for whatever reason, then moving on, mayhaps coming back to some favorite planet, at some point. What happened to this idea, the last time?
It was being run by me. :smalltongue:
Long time frequenters of this section should know by now that I have the attention span of a gerbil on crack. >.<
While being hooked up to a thousand-volt AC supply.
Do you get the problem where you have this DUUUUUUUUUUUUDE THIS IDEA IS AAAAAAAAWESSOOOOMMMMEEE idea, then you're waiting for people to join up/for you to be able to implement it and you get an idea to replace that... and one to replace that...
I'm like that.
I can't stick with anything.

I'd be really down with some Sci Fi. I originally came to FFRP looking for cyberpunk, but found that group severely lacking. I would not mind Space Opera at all, but given my posting schedule my interactions would be kind of limited.
Could always do a gear-head that's always in the engine room or something. If it's a big ship, it's going to have big parts. Maybe he has a sort of open faced primitive powered suit for picking up and moving things? I'm getting idea-goosebumps.
Shoulda said it earlier, but Penumbra.
We've already got five total players confirmed, but we could certainly use moar.
Hi there!
I haven't been here in ages, but I do a lot of LJ roleplay. Mind if I use this forum for OCs? Since my LJ stuff is fanfic style and all.
What is OCs?
Original Characters. As opposed to playing, say, Voldemort. Or Roland Deschain. Or Kermit the Frog.
Ah, okay. Most of the characters in ffrp are OCs then. You can read the first 3 posts of this thread for more info.
I want to play Voldemort now so much
Go for it!
I know, I know, but still.
Your actions please me.

I last played Town back in 2009. In fact, one of my characters is mentioned in the OP'dness section of the FAQ on the front page. I was wondering what things are like now, since I don't see anything that I remember from Town on the first page, and the Dancing Fox Inn looks dead on the second page.
The Town merged with Acro and they're both within the Nexus FFRPverse now. The locations that used to belong to the Town or Acro are there now. Same goes for characters.
I am restarting Mythos (More like, creating new threads for it then anything else)
Still think this section needs a Farscape/Firefly/Spaceship thing... maybe with a little Mass Effect thrown in (At least the parts that make sense :smalltongue:)
I just can't think of how it could work.
((And by this I mean we need a generic sci-fi plot setting))
I kinda want to make a Tiefling Pirate.
Anybody know where I can easily import her to a setting?
