Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
If that's true, then who's Adam?

A figment of Hetty's imagination?I wonder how deep we can take this.

Just part of Renard's delusion/fantasy/whatever. Adam=Antimony. Hetty is the reflection of Renard's feelings of resentment over his current situation.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
The real question is, will "Madam, I'm Adam." ever be uttered in this comic? :smallamused: ...do nine men interpret? nine men I nod...

Adam is Danny's brother. In order to cope with his brother's death of congenital heart failure, he made up a supernatural wolf-monster and blamed it for Danny's death.

What a lovely smile Hetty has. :smallamused:
Interesting choice of words there. "I can't" instead of "I won't."

I'm getting Strangers on a Train vibes

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
something tells me this will end up less "strangers on a train" and more "throw momma off the train"

Well, if he says "Won't", Hetty might just be encouraged to keep trying to persuade him. By saying "Can't" he takes it out of the realm of choice. Which would be more effective in making Hetty drop the topic.
I wonder what Hetty was before she was trapped in the doll body. Female, yes, probably. Also probably not very strong, hence her interest in beings of power. I suspect not human, although perhaps not a member of the Forest. She's becoming quite an intriguing character. Which is good, because I think we're going to be with her for a while...

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
By panel 7 she appears to have forgotten all about the whole "you should kill Annie" thing because she's rediscovered her original goals for today. I guess she must be one of those people who only live in the moment, flitting from whim to whim as they strike her.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
Call me slow, but I only got now why Jones finds shadow's uniqueness relevant. http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=979 He's as unique as she is.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
Oh yes, Hetty, have the flammable cotton doll carry the inflammable fluid... (eye roll)
Pin and needles and a vindictive doll; this will not end well.

You may simply be being too impatient. We've gotten hints of much going on, new characters and situations in play; we'll have to see what develops.

Did Gunnerkrigg forget how to make combination locks?

Nope. He's spent way too long on showing that Hetty is evil. Which means either she's evil or there's a twist rather than her being something more ambiguous.
I'm probably only going to check back every couple-odd days to see when it starts picking up again.

How come, it hasn't dragged on nearly as long as the Jones arc did. :smalltongue:

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
When Hetty first appeared, I was 'WTF is that?!'
WTF that is a needy, manipulative, passive-aggressive, monotonous petty evil pain in the ass. I think of her as Rey's miserable little cousin that repeatedly is stuck on the side of the road because she ran out of gas since she is too self-absorbed to remember to fill-up.
He still has to go rescue her because...hey...family.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
I'm sticking in to see what Hetty is planning to do to Adm. Pins, matches, and lighter fluid. I wonder what else she's getting?

Hetty overall seems like the sort of being you wouldn't want to hang around, and yet they seem to be friends, and she has a lot of insight into Renard's thought process and history.
Her situation also mirrors Renard's own, and the symbol on her forehead even looks a bit like his own.
What if she's not really there at all, but is merely a figment of Renard's imagination giving voice to his darker thoughts?

She could be a figment of Renard's imagination and still be there. If Coyote is right, then human emotions can spawn god-like and very real beings. We have also seen Zimmy summon some rather nasty ...things. What if Hetty is a manifistation of Rey's frustration? She could be the naugthy part of him that has been split off. She is doing all the bad things that Rey can not.

The problem with that is that Coyote's theory hinges on the man in the desert dying alone to spawn the god-beings. Rey would need to die for his frustration to spawn a Hetty, and we don't want that to happen just yet. Also, Zimmy's "summons" are temporary illusions that are "only as real as you let them be" and Hetty clearly has a life outside of Reynardine. Besides, Rey doesn't believe that Annie is a cruel, capricious b***h (which, incidentally, is what needs to happen for a Hetty to spawn from Rey's death). A bit thoughtless, perhaps, but otherwise he was defending her.

But Jones was an established character who was a complete mystery, so at least I was interested in finding out her origin. Hetty is a completely random addition, just talking **** about the main characters and trying to convince Rey to go evil.
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
So. Focus on the symbol. Um.
Was that Renard's, or is it Annie's?
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
It is the symbol that shows Antimony's possession of the doll, and by extension, Reynardine.
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
Let's see. Can't be Jones, she and Rey meet at school. I don't think Brinnie because we haven't seen that she and Rey even met. Besides, there's no indication she continued to live in the Court after graduation, more likely she'd be in Asgard. I doubt Eglamore, I think he lives at the school. So...
It is a puzzlement.

I believe it's Annie's mark of ownership on Rey. Hence Hetty's irritation and outrage about it.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
Now I feel extremely sorry for Adam. Unless Hetty is putting more insulation in his bed than she says, he looks like he's allergic.
He also doesn't look like that bad a guy. Maybe he should stop being nice and just put Hetty in a box for a few years until she mellows.
(We've seen Rey can adjust his form. I wonder what Hetty's words will lead to?)

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
The last panel today makes me grin, the two of them look so comical in that simpler style.
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
Hetty has a hilarious glare face in that panel. "THIS IS SRS BSNS."
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 4: Friends in Need
Well, if Adam is real then Hetty must be real too. Unless Rey has developed a split personality, is seeing a imaginary Hetty, did the fiberglass thing himself and has generally fallen completely of his rocker. But I don't think so.
How did this dork come into possesion of Hetty?
