Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
It's still not quite an annual thing, yet, but we're almost there.
This October Alarra and I are cordially inviting anyone who will be in the area for the weekend of October 12-14 to descend upon our home and partake of our hospitality.
We don't have the same kind of awesome that the Johnson City folks have, but we DO have one of the more spectacular Rennaissance Festivals in the country (second largest, I'm told).
Currently our plans are to have people arriving on Friday, participating in games and socializing until the wee hours of "way earlier than in JC". On Saturday morning, we'll awaken earlier and caravan down to the Ren Fest, leaving our place at around 8:30am in order to try to get good parking and good positioning for opening ceremonies, which are fun. Doors close at 6PM, but if everyone's ready to go before then, we can certainly pack up early. Upon leaving RenFest, we'll again gather at the Troll Cave and partake in more gaming and socializing until whatever hour we want. Sunday will consist of sad farewells and wishes for safe travels back to your respective home turfs.
I'll need a headcount for who's up for the RenFest. Given enough notice, I can get tickets at a discount of about $3 cheaper than the price at the gates. It'll also mean that people won't have to stand in line at the gates and we can start enjoying the morning even earlier.
Activities for Friday and Saturday night are open for discussion. If there's something that people would like to do, we'll see what we can figure out about making that happen.
We will have that Thursday night off, so if people are too excited to wait and want to show up early, we'll be home and happy to entertain. :smallcool:

Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Would love to, but there's a bit too much water between here and Trogland. And I don't have enough money to buy a plane ticket. :smallfrown:
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Put me and Gryf down as interested but not confirmed.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
The Ren Faire is awesome! If you go, you need to see the Danger Committee!
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
That reminds me, I need to check and see if they're going to be there this year. Last year was the first time I'd seen them there.
EDIT: Score! They'll be there, but only during October.

Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
I'd totally hop on a greyhound down from Rhodes Island, but to go so far in only one weekend, especially since I've got obligations back at the seminary, I'll have to sit this one out. :smalltongue:
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Please list me as a Possible attendee. I don't have sufficient vacation time to drive it this year, meaning it's a question of budgeting for airfare (and maybe a rental vehicle).
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Please add Hippie and me to the attending list! I will make sure he adjusts his schedule. YAY!!!
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
I'll be there.
In fact, I may really be there by October. Well, more in Bethesda than Baltimore, but close enough. Here's hoping.

Beat me to it.
I would however, like to add a small qualification to attending this wonderful event...
Should a certain Brit attend, he must be *stabbed repeatedly* be everyone in attendance. Vengence shall be mine... :smallamused:

Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Mark down Kyrian, Erin, and little Gracie as "We will see about attending, but apparently these new babies cost money..."
I'm going to try though :D
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Put me on as confirmed. I'll try to get tyckspoon to go so I don't have to Greyhound it, but I have no issues with doing it if I have to.

Bethesda is super close still, and really nice. Are you in the market to move there? Are you contemplating working for the NIH, per chance? Suffice to say, if either of these is true, this will be awesome.

I know I texted you earlier, but you were probably still a little busy at the time, so...
Congratulations! (I was beginning to wonder if you were serious about Erin being pregnant. Wasn't Gracie due like ten days ago? :smalltongue:)
Also, I'm working on the assumption that since you're posting/texting and seem to be in a good mood that mommy is fine too?

My contact is at CBER, actually. Which is currently working in the NIH labs until their own facility is done being built (I think in Silver Springs) and ready for people to move into. And there's no guarantee that I'll get the job, though I'm a reasonably strong candidate. Especially if they update the job description to include flow cytometry requirements.

Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Coolio! We'll be hoping you get it too, then!
(If things work out and you find you need a realtor, let me know. I know a gal who knows a gal, so to speak. :smallcool:)
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Can't believe I'm not automatically on the confirmed attendees list! :smalltongue: Unless something CRAZY happens, I will be there, and I can give myself my OWN rides!
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
So, if I do end up on the Greyhound, is there a station closer than downtown Baltimore? Because no search results come up for Glen Burnie.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Dearly wanting to be there...dears...
We'll see how things work out with work, not-work, wife's research agenda, etc.

Actually, the one in "downtown" Baltimore isn't terribly far. It's on our side of Baltimore and isn't very downtown at all. Probably about a 15 minute drive for us is all (assuming you're not trying to get there when there's a ball game in town :smalltongue:).

That would be awesome! Smellie Hippie still doesn't believe you actually exist! :smallcool:

-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
I very well might be able to attend; depends on whether or not I can find a ride/bus money.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Where are you coming from?
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Put me in for a highly probable. I foresee no significant problems arranging the time, and it should be affordable assuming I mostly stop spending money from now through August (semi-related topic: I'm not doing GenCon this year.)

Just wanted to get a headcount of who would be interested in 'dressing' for the ren-fest? It's more fun if we are all participating... especially if there is a possible option of a 'theme'...

Like a Dr. Who theme? muah ah aha
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Alarra and I will be dressing up in our usual garb. We have intentions of going to Goodwill near the house and seeing if we can buy them out of things that can be used for costumes and making that stuff available to people here if they didn't bring anything.
I don't know about doing a theme. I'm not sure if what I have is conducive to it. (Though it might once we raid the Goodwill!) The idea sounds fun, though.
Even if we don't go with a theme, dressing up for RenFest is a lot of fun and it's highly encouraged. (For the more affluent, there is a costume rental place on site, but I found them to be a tad expensive.)

Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
For what it's worth... Mountain Faerie and myself will be trying to lean towards Steampunk.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
De will support you in that endeavor. She's always looking for an excuse to wear her goggles.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
I missed the last DC meetup because I was out of town that weekend, and now I've moved across the country for my new job and will be out of town again. Maybe next year. :smallfrown:
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
You don't think that everyone should wear one of these?

This. All of this. Also, Mango - LOVE that shirt. Buy me one, and I will gladly wear it (WXL plskthxbai).
I have my goggles, a dress, and boots I could wear. I LOVE the steampunk idea. And I already have stuff, so...yeah.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
You can add me to the "tentative" list, but it's not likely - that's soccer season, and I coach two teams. Odds are good I'll have at least one game that weekend... I'll likely know my teams' schedules late August or early September.

That shirt is awesome.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
I don't have a steampunk costume, but I do have a hat!
I need that shirt.
*purchases*
Ah, the wonders of the internet! I wish I could impulse buy them for the rest of you.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Please add me to the "maybe/interested" list. This year, I' hope to attend for certain (and will be sure to ask off early if I can)
If I do go, I can also certainly promise I will bring along some period garb for Renfest. Been a few years since I've gone to it

Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
I have a local girlfriend who makes mini top-hats on headbands we could get. They are usually like $10 each, but I bet we can get them for less if we order a bunch (and with this much lead time). I brought mine to the JC meet-up, but I don't think anyone got any pictures of me in it.
Here is a photo from Facebook.
Let me know who wants one, and I can get her to make us some! All will, obviously, be a bit different, as materials are available. And if you have specific requests, she can try to get them done.

I have gotten word that we are "going to try" and make this meet-up. Any locals wanna recommend a place that falls between clean and decently-priced and pleasingly-located?

Let me dig up the stuff from last year. It'll take me a bit because I have chores to do, but I'll get it up here soon.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Please add me to the "banging my head into the desk repeatedly because I can't make this meetup either" list. You do have one of those right?

Here's a post from last year's thread.
We stayed at the Days Inn last year. I don't recall forming any especially strong positive or negative impressions from the stay - well, the parking lot was kinda weird. I do remember that it was pretty much a straight shot up the road to the Troll Cave from there.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Brb, moving out of my house so I can offer people a room to stay...
Nevermind, can't til next year. :smallannoyed:
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
*cough* BUMP *cough*
We're gonna try and make it. Depends on the offer they make for me to go full-time, and also whether we are gonna try and do Universal Studios for the holidays.
-

Do or not do, there is no try.

Have you bugged SirSix to come along? He promised me homebrew.

Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
It's mainly a matter of finances, which we should have this year. Especially once De starts working full time in a couple of weeks.

Aside from an exhibitionist, apparently.

It is still in the air if one or both of our kids come along. Definitely the two of us though. Safe to assume we have crashing space in the troll cave?

Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Turns out I have a big sacrifice on the Thursday morning before the meetup. 15 animals, with all the associated harvesting of organs. Which means I won't be taking that day off to travel. So I'll either fly in late Thursday or early Friday. Haven't figured out when I'm going home yet.
Oh, and it's looking like I won't be a local in October. Maybe by New Year's, though.

Is this one of those 'we won't be able to make a decision as early as we thought' kind of things?
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
It's more a "we're probably gonna go with the local guy who has more experience with animals than you, but here's contact information for some other people that may be looking for lab technicians in the near future" deal. I'm also watching job listings in the DC area. But I'm going to be heavily involved in several experiments where I am in the coming months, and as much as I want to get out of AR I don't want to leave people who are depending on me hanging.
-
Re: Baltimore/DC Area Meetup 2012
Gotcha. Well, we're glad to hear that it's not completely off the table at any rate. :smallcool:
