And as for the book . . . how about Across The Nightingale Floor by Lian Hearn. I've already dropped the hint to dad (by picking up the entire series the shop had - four out of five, quite nicely, but not the first one) on Saturday as a Christmas pressie.
Sure, why not?
Music... well, I know the words and tune to a lot of songs, and for some reason I've had 'Soldiers of the Wasteland' playing on repeat in my head for days now. I should learn the words so I can sing along to it.
I didn't used to be able to sing, but I can sorta do it now.

There is no such thing as White Chocolate, by virtue of 'White Chocolate' not being chocolate.
Anyway, Extra dark chocolate (at least 65%) is the best anyway.

Just...love music.

It's a horrific thing, a blight to all of humankind, come to plague our tongues and warp them into things that should not be.

You mean squid bones are not the only thing that is fictional? Madness!
To be even more technical, White chocolate does exist. It is not, however, a misnomer, as the FDA (and probably a whole lot of other people) does not consider it chocolate. It does contain cocoa butter though. It is also delicious, and now I want some.

Llundain (Welsh) looks similar but sounds different.
Welsh only really has translations for English cities that are close to Wales or are otherwise important, e.g. Lerpwl, Manceinion. Other English city translations don't relate at all; for example, Caer Efrog, Rhydychen, Amwythig and Croesoswallt.
Even translated Welsh place names sound completely unrelated, like Treffynnon (Holywell).

HERESY!
By the Chocolate Goddess; Chikalottie, thou art a blasphemer! 'Tis time that thou shouldst be punished.
[cue scene from Thief of Time with the huge vat of chocolate]
Throw the heretic in!

@Destro: No squid bones. They don't exist, never have, never will.
@Dihan: quick guesses:
Lerpwl - Liverpool
Manceinion - Manchester
No idea for the others.

Correct. The others are:
Caer Efrog: York
Rhydychen: Oxford
Amwythig: Shrewsbury
Croesoswallt: Oswestry

I prefer the Irish, myself, or at least their music.
Ugh, technical translation is the single most dull thing in the world.

Though I must admit, I was playing Warcraft 3 the other day and was curious about this map (my brother gave me a whole bunch of them to play) but when I opened it, I got...Got.....*sobs*....I got Rick Rolled. T_T

Re: Cristo's Consistently Confusing and Constantly Casual Random Banter #105
Cool; but even if an Englisher like myself tries to pronounce those two it's fairly similar. None of the others even vaguely resemble the English name.
I love Celtic mythology myself. Welsh; Irish; Cornish; I even know some Scottish stuff.
Did you know the Scottish equivalent of Cinderella had slippers made of rushes?

Re: Cristo's Consistently Confusing and Constantly Casual Random Banter #105
I love Dutch mythology, it's such an awesome mix of Celtic, Germanic, and local myths.
And, the oldest complete piece of Dutch literature has an elf in it, and not even as a minor character.
The piece is called "Karel ende Elegast", or, in English, "Charlemagne and Elf Guest"

It was always the Native American myths that caught my attention. Give me a story about Coyote and I'm a happy reader.
Yes, I realize I just horribly generalized the rich diversity of Native American legend...

I think you just horribly insulted the Aztec culture, myself being a amateurish knower of it. Not to mention the other ones....
Also, London is not only called Londen in Afrikaans but also in Dutch. Afrikaans is based on dutch, only then throw in english, french, german and street language and some garbled stuff.

No doubt.
It's been way too long since I've been able to actually read up on these things...

I think you just horribly insulted Afrikaans, which is a full fletched language that developed from an ancestor of Modern Dutch. Neither one is based on the other, instead both of them evolved from a common ancestor (Republic Era Dutch).

Re: Cristo's Consistently Confusing and Constantly Casual Random Banter #105
My dad works for an Indian (Native American...but they prefer Indian, pronounced in-din) tribe and he and some anthropologists worked on a "tribal placenames atlas" that includes the names of the places, what they were used for, and the myths behind the naming. Whenever we're driving around, he'll point them out.
"And that spot? the story behind the river there is that a young maiden of the coastal tribes was engaged to be married to an inland chief's son, and she made the journey back to the coast and when she arrived she was dirty and tired and he treated her badly. The next morning she got up, washed, and dressed in her bridal clothes, and he came out and sucked up to her about the night before. She was put off by his arrogance and she ran away. She cried all the way home and the river was formed by her tears as she traveled back to her father."
Only he told it much better than that.
But stuff like that is very cool.
Though there's one place where the English explorers asked what it was called, and as a joke their guides told them "it's called ___", which is the word for *ahem* a man's parts, just as a joke. :) And it got written down on the official maps.
-
Re: Cristo's Consistently Confusing and Constantly Casual Random Banter #105
Interesting fact: after Latin and Greek literature, Irish has the oldest written literature.
And I've been wonderfully stealing Celtic (in general) myths for my ships. There's so much scope. I'm even reading the Mabinogion for the newest one.
Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman is based on, I think, West Indian/Jamaican mythology - Anansi is their trickster god, or so Gaiman says.
And in the book I had, he said that Coyote was the Native American equivalent of Anansi in an nterview thingy.
New things:
1) My parents went to bed at nine o'clock! YES! Nine!
2) OH GODS SIDEWAYS! WISPA'S ARE BACK! I haven't had one in years.
3) I walked behin a couple on the way home from the shop, and at least one of them was suspiciously drunk.

Ah, the fine old naming traditions that gave us the Forest of Skund, and Mount Oolskunrahod.
I need to not do stupid things in my chess games. 1.5/5 is simply not good enough.

Meh. This looks like the right place to put this...
I was just listening to Duel of the Fates, by John Williams. At the same time, my sister was playing I Just Want To Be With You from High School Musical Three. Normally, I'd just try to drown out her music. But this time I decided to listen to them together. What was wierd was that... they... actually sounded kinda good together. :smalleek::smallconfused:

I concur. High School Musical, whether it be 1, 2, or 3, is just plain BAD.
