Let's Play: Pokemon Leaf Green (Nuzlocke)

Hello Everybody!

So, believe it or not, I hadn't really heard about a Nuzlocke challenge before lurking around this section of the forum, and the idea intrigues me. After doing a google search of some of the optional rules and an archive binge on the comic of the originator of the challenge, I've been itching to give it a try. Since I'm on a video Let's Play kick too, I figured I'd make one out of it as well. I'll be starting in earnest next week, for now I'm wondering people's preference on main character gender and name, votes and nicknames for starting pokemon, and any other nicknames for pokemon that eventually join the team.

Core Rules:
-Any Pokemon that faints is considered dead
-May only catch the first Pokemon encountered in an area, no others (No Duplicates)
-All Pokemon must have nicknames

Additional Rules:
-Cannot catch legendary Pokemon
-May only buy one of each item from each PokeMart
-Use the same amount of Pokemon as the opponent during a Gym battle or rival battle

I know, you don't see too many YouTube nuzlocke LPs, and those that are out there are mostly from a OOC perspective. I'm hoping I can try to do the commentary from a IC perspective to give that emotional story-feeling that most Nuzlockes have, if I can make the viewers start to care about the trainer and their pokemon I feel I'll have succeeded. If not, at least I'll have played a fun run of a great game under a challenging trial.

My vote goes toward Birch or Sojourn as a boy name, and a Squirtle named Poseidon.

Part 1: Procurring the Professor's Parcel
Sojourn receives his first pokemon, curbstomps the upstart Gary Oak, retrieves a parcel of questionable contents for Professor Oak, and then catches his first wild pokemon.

Oooh, Tesla, I like. Chances are pretty low I'll get a pikachu, but it'll work for any male electric pokemon.

I'll support Tesla for any male electric, but if you get a lady Pikachu, I vote Candy. That was always the name of my Pikachu from my youth.

For a male caterpie, let's go with Papillion.
For a female, Margarine, making our party...Butter-free.

I never really started nicknaming until I got into Platinum, and I felt that nicknames were more warranted with the addition of the GTS, giving me a taste of the world out there. Even then, I didn't nickname until they were level 60+, and a regular on my team. Nuzlocking has expanded that.

Part 2: Rumble with the Rival
In today's episode, Sojourn trains his pokemon to be strong enough to challenge his rival Gary, and catches two new members for Team Awesome!

I tried something a bit...different editting wise with this. Let me know what you think.

Shed skin only has a 30% chance of working, you should have kept her in there so that maybe it would work, and only switch out if one more turn would kill it.

Is that how it works? Good to know, thanks.

You're right, I should've left Magarine in (it's not like the enemy could've attacked), but it's funny, when you know your Pokemon are dead when they hit 0, you get a bit panicky.

So apologies for the double post, but I have now officially caught up and am here to offer my infinite wisdom.*

First things first, you've been very lucky so far. Thank the RNG for she smiles kindly, and pray that me writing this does not incur her wrath. That said, be more careful with your pokemon. Keep track of how much damage the enemy is dealing on an average attack, and multiply it by three. If your pokemon's health drops to less than or equal to that number it's time to pull them out. Do NOT pull them out if the enemy has a good chance of knowing pursuit. In that case, follow medical advice on how to administer a potion. If your health drops below the reccomended level, but you are confident you can take the pokemon out first you may do so. Confidence follows the SAD principle. Speed to go first, accuracy to hit, and damage to KO. If you are confident all three of these things are guaranteed, then you will never be sad.

There will be plenty of enemies which must be avoided in Nuzlockes while being pushovers in the normal game, among them as you learned in your latest outing is any enemy that carries the risk of poison. Avoid poison early on, for it is the plague upon all Nuzlockes (up until black and white.) Nidorans, zubats, weedles, all must either be run from or dealt with using appropriate measures (special attacks against nidorans, super effective attacks against zubats and weedles.)

Finally, we come to the topic of names. A good way to go if you want to use voting is to look up what routes you will be visiting ahead of time and posting a list of possible pokemon for us to look over. There are other ways, but this seems to have the most success.

Other than that, I'm really enjoying what you've done so far, here's to your continued success!

Isn't it more of a 2.5 times, then 3. Regular hits can be between 85%-100% Crits can be 170-200.

Thanks for some great advice, glad you've enjoyed so far.

Yeah, I know I've been pretty lucky. I've had Poseidon out there a few times a bit longer than I should've (HE WAS IN THE RED YOU IDIOT! WHY DID YOU LEAVE HIM OUT THERE!?). I'll need to be more careful in the future. Though, once I train Pokey up, I should have something to fight poison types with, because, correct me if I'm wrong, poison types are immune to poison? So I can always have her front and centre when that's a risk. I also plan to use repels religiously once I've obtained access to them in Pewter.

As far as the nickname, I will probably in the future do a look up and list the areas and candidates for a new team mate. It's not really voting so much as looking for suggestions. Sometimes I do have a good name in mind I'll probably use (if I had gotten a male caterpie for example, despite some good suggestions I was kinda set on going with Absalom), but other times, as with Pokey, I'm a bit at a loss. The only polling I did was for the starting pokemon.

Thinking ahead I've got a few names:

Nidoran(m): Jackson or Presely
Mankey: Son Goku (m)
Pidgey: Pilot
Jigglypuff(f): Katie
Jigglypuff(m): Bieber
Clefairy(m): Puck

Paras: Frogchair

Edit: Oh! And adding to the list of things to be avoided: everything that knows self destruct.

My suggestions for names

Nidoran(m): Idoun
Pidgey: Ivan if Male, Sheba if female
Clefairy(m): Optimus
Zubat: Magikarp 2
Paras: Shrooms!

Part 3: Battle with Brock
After a regroup at the Pokemon Centre, Sojourn and Team Awesome push through Viridian Forest and face off against the leader of Pewter City Gym.

I was going to suggest the send out Spivey first thing.

Also you are aware that Butterfree is doubly weak to rock types right. So it might have been slaughtered out there.

Also Onix is doubly weak to water types.


I would totally be a water type gym leader.

Hmmm, I did realize that The flying side would be weak to rock, forgot about the bug side. In fairness though, I think only Onix has a rock attack, and only one, so risky but not horribly stupid. Her speed and confusion being able to bypass the rock resistance really made her the only good back-up. But in the end, Poseidon with Bubble handled it well.

And...Why would Onix be double weak to water? It's a pure rock type, it should only have x2 vs water, not the x4 of rock/ground.

I'm actually not sure what gym type I would pick myself. Probably Steel type or water. Or normal.

...I could've sworn it was a pure rock type. Huh, I guess my poke-knowledge is rustier than I thought.

Part 4: The Route 3 Rout
With a shiny new Boulder Badge, Sojourn enters the battlegrounds of route 3, facing many adversaries, and then attempts to catch a new team mate.

Technical note: The game audio recorded a bit crackly for some reason, sorry, hopefully it's not too noticeable.

Your Kakuna seemed to have issues with poisoning pokemon

Yeah, Pokey seemed reluctant to poison pokemon at first, but now that she's evolved into a Beedrill it seems that hesitation has gone away. It'd be nice if I could pick up a stronger poison or bug type move than poison sting soon though.

Part 5: Mischief in Mt. Moon
After catching a new member for Poseidon's Harem, Sojourn and Team Awesome inflict some danger on some strangers.

I like the party summary at the end of each video. Most video let's plays have a dreadful habit of not giving much info about stats.

Part 6: The First to Fall
During the second part of the Mt. Moon journey, a valuable team member falls to the Nuzlocke challenge. A saddened Sojourn then arrives in Cerulean City.

Spivey! Why must the good die young!? Whose going to handle the rival's grass types!? Besides Margarine....

I'd recommend grinding to at least level 18 before fighting your rival. Otherwise you may have issues not wiping.

Man, seriously, Rattata get dangerous once they hit level 13. And Spivey's poor defense... She didn't stand a chance. I should've switched out for Poseidon but... :smallfrown:

I was gonna look up Gary's party before challenging him, mostly so I get the number of pokemon correct, but yeah, Level 18 is typically the sweet spot for going forward.

Though truthfully, I am a itsy, bitsy bit worried about what might happen if I don't get a pokemon that can learn fly. It's something I wasn't considering with my no-dupe rule.

You should be able to find a Pidgey, they're reasonably common.

Poor Spivy... On some level, you're always expecting it. On another level, you never do.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll pick up a Pidgey or a Doduo or something.

Part 7: Return of the Rival
In an effort to make sure none of his Pokemon share Spivey's fate, Sojourn trains Team Awesome to new heights of power, then squares off against Gary.

Yeah, I suppose I still have two more pokemon to look out for. I guess my main worry is that, once I have them, I need to protect them, because my no dupes clause won't let me make many mistakes in that regard.

Fury attack plus focus energy is a pretty nice combo. And bite is a lovely move. Sad to see Spivey leave.

Anyways name suggestions:

Pidgey: Valiant
Bellsprout: Jinglebell
Abra: Houdini

Oh, and be sure to have Margarine in front in case an Abra pops up. I believe compound eyes gives sleep powder a better chance of hitting than a poke ball. After that don't waste time weakening it, just chuck poke balls at it and hope it doesn't teleport.

Oh how I love the nice blend of Sleep powder and Compoundeyes, It's almost like Spore, on a fast pokemon

Love bite. As weak as she is, when she works, Dr. Acula is pretty amusing in how she can shut down opponents. Confuse them and use bite or astonish and they seem to be mostly flinched or hitting themselves. Unfortunately Supersonic's accuracy really sucks.

Thanks for more nickname suggestions. We're thinking alike about Margarine up front. She's totally going to be my capture specialist, I don't want to waste any pokeballs, so even if it wasn't an abra I'm sleeping something up. And in the case of other pokemon, her tackle should be weak enough to soften them up without accidental killing.

Any suggestions for worse case scenario that I don't capture a bellsprout when facing Misty? I'm thinking Poseidon and Margarine are my best case, Poseidon's defense and resistence to water should let him soak some damage and he can retaliate with bite, Margarine is reasonably defensive against special attacks and can reliably sleep opponents. Everyone else just doesn't feel like they have the defensive capability to handle the damage Misty can deal out.

Poseidon's bite is the best option for Starmie right now, Bite does double damage. If Pokey gets twineedle she may be the second best option. The Starmie has no psychic attacks.

Part 8: Picking on Picnickers
Sojourn searches for a Bellsprout to add to Team Awesome as a secret weapon against Misty while battling with trainers that are dating outside Bill's house.

I suppose my luck with the RNG in battle is coming back as no luck avoiding dupes. Although... I think I might switch my plans up a bit and check out routes 5&6 (I believe you get access after visiting bill) for a bellsprout before taking on Misty.

As a side note, part of my reasoning to hold back Pokey, if the first team fails against Misty, I want at least a minor advantage on my roster for a secondary team instead of none.

Misty was a pushover back in Yellow, but then I got LeafGreen, and it all went downhill from there. At least I didn't have to grind a Nidoran until it got double kick to beat Brock, though.
