Day 242: From High
Tired, so a practise of clouds and light. Threw a pony in at the end because why not?

I envy you and your tablet. At least I'm assuming you're using a tablet. What did you do that in anyway?
That is indeed looking pretty good. Interesting stroke work.
(but i don't quite get why her right side is dark. If anything that one should be the bright side. :smallwink: )
Of course I'm using a tablet. The Wacom Bamboo Fun is only about AUS $200, and I love it to bits. The program is Paint Tool SAI, done mostly with brush+blur and a few pencil lines for emphasis.
Thanks! And derp; I guessed.
Well, here's the store. They've got some new models since I last purchased too.
Day 243: Whoops
Badly mismanaged my time today and didn't produce anything worth looking at. Got stuck in crappy sketch and doodle mode; I did do a lot of exercises, particularly from the Art Upgrade thread, but it didn't turn out great and I wasn't able to produce anything complete. Will revisit later.

Day 244: Salutations
The linework on this one is pretty bad, but I rushed through it because I had an idea for a colouring technique I wanted to try. I layered two solid-fills of colour, and then used blur around the edges of the top, darker layer to illuminate the edges. I applied the same technique across the entire picture to see if there was anything that it worked for or anything it didn't.
Overall, I figure that I learned a lot about that particular combination of tools, but I should have focused more on my lineart at the beginning. I'm going to do some lineart exercises and practises over the next few days. Painting just happens to be ridiculous amounts of fun so I take any excuse to do it.
EDIT: Oh yes, and I replaced the nib on my stylus; that really threw me off for most of this.

Is that the General from Takeshi's Castle?
(Her pauldrons don't quite align with the arms there and i'm not quite sure how the tail comes out of that skirt.)
Illuminating the edges might have worked better if you had used a layer of white on top of the linework and then blurred that up to create shimmer.
I don't recognise that, alas.
Pauldrons were a not-thought-through random addition. I've actually become really interested in uniform design recently, but I need to take the time to get used to designing clothes; that's high up on the current list.Quote:

Ooooh, that's a great idea! I was thinking something similar but didn't realise how to implement it, thank you!Quote:

A lot of 503s these days.
That, and I went to bed and forgot to recover my data after the board maintenance period
Propping on a wall has been tried, but it works for you so I'm going to assume I did something wrong and try it again. I suspect it has to do with paper not being supported properly, and poorly positioned light sources.
And is that the promised Phoeplot? Nice. Your idea as voiced gives me ideas. I think I may just try and finish that last digital piece. Thanks Thanqol. You have framed it as an understandable process, rather than a magically cross able gulf, and that really opens it up.
Basically, you want to not be standing between the light source and your picture.
You're welcome?Quote:

Day 245: Minimalism Week
Introducing Minimalism Week, where Thanqol forces himself to not overdetail everything and instead work on consistency, speed, and basic shapes! I want to spend the week working on really basic concepts and simple shapes and drawings; I can focus on detail later.

That looks cool, but.. who is that?
So let's see. It's an original character for a universe made by Lauren Faust, converted for an entirely different universe made by Lauren Faust. I spy a multiverse explorer.
She's also featured in Mage: The Awakening and Exalted, under different names. Multiverse explorer is pretty accurate, but she'd tell you location didn't matter because it's always an internal journey.
Now you've got me thinking about other continuities and styles to draw her in. Hmmm.
Day 245b: Winning Internet Arguments

Do not anger the artist undergoing Minimalism Week.
At first I wasn't sure if that was actually supposed to be AotrS. Then I looked in Ponythread. Then I lol'd. That's hilarious and massively amusing. Awesome work!
Day 246: Minimalism Week #2
Minimalism week continues! And goodness-darn-heck in a handbucket this is the most educational thing I've done in ages. Part of the rules of minimalism week is that I've got to draw as many things in basic shapes, circles, squares, ovals etc before I progress and it's a fantastic way of breaking things down into their basic forms.
I was too tired to finish everything today, but I'm happy with the decision.

While you are still doing this craaaaaazy week, could you draw whatever you think a Tectonic Robot is supposed to look like?
That's because my visualisation looks like this.

http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/3960/day247b.png
Personally, I keep misreading that as "Teutonic Robot", visualizing some kind of medieval automaton cavalry. Actually, enough of them running could be quite "tectonic". :)
I feel bad about asking again, cause I did so in ponythread, but you're usually really fast on replies so I'm gonna be totally selfish and beg for a humanised pic like Mids and yours? I mean, if you have time and stuff.
I tried drawing ponies in my lecture today.
It went... poorly.
Well, if you're going to make it avatar sized, least I can do is use it as an avatar, I suppose!
Ah, what the hay, if you've got time perhaps you could whip up a chibi robo-druid for me?
