What tool do you use? How do you use it? Provided this is from inkscape that is.
I am just using Bezier curve tool mostly with the Ellipse shape. I usually have a hand drawn line art in the background as a pseudo guild for line/curve placement. I also places different lines on different layers, with the back hooves on bottom layers, and usually Hair/mane up front. This particular draft of Lyra was kind of rough, I got lucky that the skirt lines didn't look too bad when colored over.

Re: My Little Pony XIV: Boots on Hooves / Bikinis on Top
Speaking of Rarity's family, I wonder if her parents' absence is related to Applejack's parents' absence. I mean, it's only strange because Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle are still school fillies, and I also find it strange that Granny Smith is still around, but not Applejack's parents.
I also have this thought about Sweetie Belle retorting back to Rarity "If mom was still alive she'd let me!" and it being all sad and heart-wrenching to Rarity and the audience.

We have indirect evidence that Rarity's parents are still alive. Faust said that Sweetie normally stays with them, but she'll be at Rarity's sometimes when they're out of town, or some such.
Applejack's parents, on the other hand, are dead, IMO. It makes more sense.

the aft of the Neo Nemo contacts the whirling black vortex, and begins shifting ever so slowly to the right as it's port side is pulled into the event horizon by the shooting tides of Nightmare. The chains strain and pull taut, dragging the party barge to it's mutually assured doom (ETA 45~125 seconds, Equestrian standard time).
From beneath Grif's now pinkened Limb, a squeak and a rattle eventually make themselves understood as whispers, pushed out through unmoving lips.
"worst... ...timing... ...ever"
Elsewhere in the fray, a conspicuous log, approximately half a meter long and 10 cantilevers thick, single branch with two leaves still attached, and wearing a smaller version of S's jingasa, stands dramatically aboard something.
The ninja log surveys it's surroundings. E'ery creaking board, e'ery pony movement picked up by it's sensitive ninja log senses. It's target; well, actually, it doesn't have one. Hm.
Aha! That spinning, brewing ship! Ninja log spins like a tornado, or a typhoon or hoer similar awesome weather formation, and suddenly stops. It's green cloak and pointed hat settling into place, NinjaWizard Log begins the complex incantation to teleport itself across the intervening distance.
But alas! A stray cupcake whizzes past, disrupting NinjaWizard Log's concentration. Short of it's only 5th level spell, it once again begins the whirlwind dance, the sirocco of power that is it's comically cartoony source of equipment.
Standing tall, salsa music clicking and coaching away in the background, Ninja Wizard Zorro Log grabs a chandelier withs its branch, and cape fluttering dramatically, swings towards the intended set of Ninja Wizard Zorro Log's next big scene!
I'm curious. So, free (possibly worthwhile) art commission to anypony who can guess what the hay is goin' on in my response
Sounds to me like the Ponies-turn-to-wood discussion from earlier. has the posion joke and void sillies released your inner selves in wood form?

Aww, beside curve tool? Isn't that the line with the other lines that bend the line when moved? I can't use it for beans. It's worse than that pen tool in Photoshop, that sort of does the same thing while also making lines by clicking where you want the start and end to be.
Did I mention how bad I am at digital art?

I thought the chart was just for Midnight's connections to everypony? Bernard isn't connected to Midnight. Except that he's the Tallinn to try and soothe our Hippogrif after she flees town, before eventually escorting her home when she's too dunk to really do what she says she wants to. He of course knows how to treat a lady.

Actually, Esper's doing a chart of every convoluted relationship come up with in the thread so far.

And you'll probably need to be a theoretical physicist just to understand it when it gets finished, given the nature of this thread. :smalltongue:
What does physics and shipping have to do with each other? I don't know, ask the theoretical phsyicist! :smalltongue:

The chart will have to be three-dimensional, non-euclidean, or the confusing Bioshock-style map. Or a mass of black.

My brother and I are both hanging out in his room with the door closed. I'm working on my story, he's working on pony art. He has a bunch of videos and pictures pulled up for reference. Re: My Little Pony XIV: Boots on Hooves / Bikinis on Top
So, I've heard having OCs in fanfiction, shipping or otherwise is bad. Is there a specific reason for this other than that OCs can tend to be Mary/Marty Stus?

I hear that the reason tends to be that an OC is really hard to pull off properly and isn't good to read otherwise.

That's pretty much the only real reason.
I mean, there's also a level that, as fanfiction writers, we're writing with someone else's characters and setting. You get too removed from that and there's not a lot of point in just writing your own original story.
And I have seen a couple OC/Canon shippings that looked interesting. It's just a matter of presentation.
The trick to a good OC is this:
1) They have to fit the tone of the original universe.
2) While they can resemble you in a few aspects, they should have a unique outlook on life that differs from your own in significant respects.
3) You need to hook the audience on them fast. You want them to care, and they'll resist it, so you have a page at most before most will decide to give up on it.
4) Special little snowflake syndrome. This relates to number 1, but your OC shouldn't be the greatest flyer in Equestria, the best orange bucker, the most sensitive poet. A mediocre talent can still be very interesting.

I'm just going to say this about the chart, now that I have it, err, on paper, it's...there's...there is a lot of lines.

That's probably the main reason. Without having an established character to work with, it makes it that much harder to write them well. As a result, you get a lot of stories with OCs that are just downright awful.
There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a harder thing to write. I mean, just look at Moonlight over Midnight. 6 stars, and it's mostly about an OC.

Just use a white sheet of paper and put the word YES on it. :smalltongue:

Marysuedom is probably the biggest problem. Another, opposite, point is that people in the fandom are familiar with existing ponies and so are more likely to read and like something about their favorites than a new unknown.
I've seen original characters pretty well received overall, at least with what I've read here and on EqD.

That's because you haven't seen the reams of Mary Sues that DON'T get on Equestria Daily.

Hooray for having prereaders, saving us from the horrors of bad fanfic one Mary Sue at a time.

Just one. They hold it up to the socket and let Equestria revolve around them.

.5. Because she's so awesome, she can screw in two lightbulbs at once using ancient magic that only she knows!

Wrong, it's a trick question.

Re: My Little Pony XIV: Boots on Hooves / Bikinis on Top
So. Random fic idea for Bernard, estranged brother of Rarity and Sweetie Belle. Bernard is a down to earth unicorn who likes to mine and get dirty, with a rock and a pickaxe as his cutie mark. He's also very inclined to ask Rarity for her help all the time, and is generally very annoying to her and takes advantage of her generosity, but Sweetie Belle really loves him because he's such a fun guy. He's blowing into Ponyville for some reason or another (original idea was him eloping with an Apple) and shenanigans ensue.

Re: My Little Pony XIV: Boots on Hooves / Bikinis on Top
Back when I was in high school and university, I was a part of a community that made MST 3ks of fanfics. (Or, rather, was really more of a hanger on.) The stories that I could tell you about the Mary Sues and self-inserts and what not that passed our way.
So, yeah. All about being super-special-awesome-make-cast-irrelevant. That's what is the biggest problem with OCs.
-
Re: My Little Pony XIV: Boots on Hooves / Bikinis on Top
I think that the term "Mary Sue" needs a better diffinition.
The standards set for a character to be considered a Mary Sue fit most main characters in a canon story anyway.
Case in point: Twilight Sparkle.
Favorite student to her world's leader.
Incredibly powerful beyond what anyone has ever seen before dipsite being young and untrained.
Being well-liked despite being so socially awkward she doesn't even want to make friends in the first place.
Magical girl!pony episode one.
I do not consider her to be a Mary Sue, but do you see my point?
