I really don't get Kanye. I don't get why he's popular. At all.

Also, SotS, he's a damn good producer, if a little... eh, not my cuppa, but I understand the appeal. I still think the best stuff he's done were the tracks he did for Mos Def. Either way, he'll never have anything on Dilla, Blockhead, Madlib, El-P, Prefuse 73... the list goes on, and I hate to play this card, but if you're making hip-hop, it'd better be immediately accessible to white, suburban kids if you want any kind of commercial viability. :smallannoyed:
And even in that field, The Neptunes kick his ass. >.>

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I can't talk about Kanye's skills as a producer; I'm not that well educated there and prefer a dirty sound anyway.
But one thing that irritates me is that a lot of people will take anything Kanye does and claim it as an example of musical genius- even when it really, really isn't.
My best example for this is "Touch The Sky". While I'll admit that there's some lyrical dexterity there, musically, the song is lazily ripped off from Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up". To the point that the original vocals are still part of the sample.
And yet, if you look at the video for it on youtube, EVERYONE is claiming the track is a piece of musical genius and that Kanye is such an amazing songwriter...
Sorry, just annoys me.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
SotS, you know as well as I do that sampling is a legitimate method of creating music. On the other hand, when a truly great producer samples, it tends to be a hell of a lot harder to place.
-
Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I love sampling as a means of creating music. Some of my favourite musicians sample exclusively- Amon Tobin, DJ Shadow, The Avalanches...
That said, there is a difference between the sampling that those guys are using and loop-it-and-leave-it sampling.
I mean, Touch the Sky is as bad as Whatcha Say by Jason DeRulo. That takes some doing.

It can be a legitimate way of a creating music, when it's being used to actually create something new. It can also be just a lazy way to avoid having to come-up with a melody or riff, and indeed it in most mainstream music it is used at least as often in the latter respect as the former.
-
Re: Can we just do another music thread?
My point is, singling out "sampling" as opposed to "guitar playing" is a little unfair. You could just as easily knock off someone else's guitar riffs; it'd just take a few hours longer than sampling 'em. Creativity and originality doesn't care what instrument you're playing or what techniques you're using.
-
Re: Can we just do another music thread?
And I didn't intend it to be seen as any different as any musical technique.
However, Kanye's music primarily uses sampling, and, I know, he tends to use sampling in a more subtle fashion. But calling something a piece of musical genius when it evidently completely copies its melody from another piece of music is a bit much.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I recently remembered, why I love Polyphonic Spree - there is just so much positivity in their songs. I didn't get to check all their albums, but I like Together We're Heavy much more then Fragile Army.
I was also recently amazed by their predecessor: Tripping Daisy.

Nah, The Beginning Stages Of... is my favourite! Nothing can be better than "Hey, now, it's the sun! And it makes me smile, all around"
Seriously, that album has to be one of my favourite albums ever.
Actually, I'm going to put that album on right now!

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
For no reason that I can adequately explain, The Strokes debut is the most... I guess familiar album I've ever heard. Everything on it feels uncannily right.

He's one of my favourites. Partially for his lack of a filter (Taylor Swift) and partially for his lyrical deftness. I don't think he's one of the most technically skilled musicians out there, but I enjoy him.

To each his own, but choral parts of Suitcase Calling and the way they mesh with instruments worked better for me.
In all honesty a mix of physical exhaustion and Polyphonic Spree made me so relaxed I'm barely awake now.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
So the new Diary of Dreams album, Ego: X is out, and I've been too preoccupied to even notice. I know I'm going to get it regardless, but has anyone heard it yet? Just to get an idea of what my expectations should be.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I've been thinking of my favorite albums of 2011. Man this has been a good year for music. My short list has over 20 albums on it, and November has three of my most anticipated releases for the year coming out: Johnny Foreigner, Los Campesinos!, and Circle Takes the Square.
-
Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Helplessness Blues is my favorite album so far this year, no question. And haters be damned, I adore The King of Limbs.
-
Re: Can we just do another music thread?
It might also be worth noting that my friend Trevor just got an 8.4 from Pitchfork.
-
Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Ah, the noble 8.4. A distinguished and respectable rating.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
If any of you have seen Mogwai in the last couple of years, you'll have noticed their guitarist/violinist sideman Luke Sutherland (the sole black guy in a very white band). Turns out he was in an awesome band in the 90's called Long Fin Killie... check it out

You know you're a music geek when you start arguing over whether Stravinsky or Mussorgsky is better, and the merits of various arrangements of Mussorgsky pieces. Amirite, Chumley?
