Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
According to wiki, though they call it Creme Caramel:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cr%C3%A8me_caramel
Ooooohh...Looky, looky! They have a pic with dulce de leche! ^^ (second pic)
That's something typical of Argentina. And yes, flan is often eaten with both whipped cream AND dulce de leche. Which is like overkill for me. Because it's too sweet, and you can't appreciate the soft, eggy flavor and texture of the flan...
Look at the pic, see what I mean with the holes in the flan? And then on the left there's the dulce de leche.

All this due to a re-imagining of Saithis's avatar. I don't suppose she'll be flattered? :smallconfused: :smalltongue:

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Oh, I know Creme Caramel. I must say, though, it's good, but not as good as Tiramisu. Not storebought, the restauraunteur type, complete with glass, not plate, and layers of delicous.

Hehehe, I actually made up some Tiramisu last night. I don't expect any will be left by the time I get home though. My friends can tell when I've been making desserts and turn up during the day to raid my fridge.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
YOu have a RECIPE for tiramisu?? Why on earth are you here? GO make it, you silly, silly person.
Srsly, some people don't got them priorities straight. Sugar first. Socializing third. Sugar's second.
(Ps, could you send it to me? The recipe? Pwease?pwease?pwease...?

You mean panqueques?
Also, tiramisú is good, I like it but I'm not a fan. Though I'd have a taste of yours, Yiel.
It's a rule that the restaurant version of something is better than storebought, especially with these delicacies.
All said, even though I enjoy sweet stuff, I find that I get cloyed too easily. Especially with cakes and very sweet stuff. I have low tolerance to exhuberant desserts, though I like them. I tend to prefer softer, subtler tastes.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Also: Warm Walnut pudding with homemade chocolate sauce
Delicious...

That's why Tiramisu is good! It's the REAL coffee cake: basically, cake soaked in coffee. It tastes like a different, more interesting coffee, and it's sweet enough to cut a heavy Italian meal but not too sweet. It's just heaven.
EDIT: In response to the simu above, I have one better. Walnut cake with hot vanilla puddin'.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
But the best of all desserts:
Rum Cake.
-
Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
MMm, I prefer rum and...
Uh.
Judicious application of heat?
Yes. Rum and a judicious application of heat. Simple. Good.

Hahaha! I hadn't seen this!
I hope not, after all my version was clearly inferior to her original, despite my intentions of making a little gift for her.
Anyway, have you people seen the tiramisu photo on wikipedia? That's incredible...It's too much I think. I think it qualifies as food porn.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
D'anna, I'll type up the recipe when I get home.
My most requested dessert by friends is Sticky Date Pudding with Butterscotch sauce. Its a family recipe as well, and the dessert that can silence a room.

It's great to be friends with someone who recently got an Ice cream maker. You get to try all their inventions.
Of course, it's hit and miss, sometimes.
Rum Raisin... Yum
Strawberry... Yum
Blackberry & Cointreau...Yum
Ginger... 0_o

You know, by the sounds of that, a trek over to Brisbane sounds almost worthwhile. I'm sure those deserts aren't large enough to get in the way of the larger picture (the other type of desserts).
Reaper Fact #245: Next to ginger beer sticky date pudding is my second most favourite thing to devour.

Hol. E. Cruduckles. That pictures was the site equivalent of, say, sucking premium Quebec Maple Syrup up through the can whilst reading wish fufillment books while you gently hear children laughing in the distance.
Mah head, it x-PLODE.
And Yiel, two things.
A, thankyouthankyouthankyou, and
B, will you come to Montreal and be my personal breakfast chef?
Srsly, sugar in the day is the BEST thing ever.
PS, Death, you say "next to ginger beer sticky date pudding is my second most favorite thing to devour." That means ginger beer is second, sticky date pudding is next to it, so it's third. What's first?

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
I have to get on and try my late grandmother's recipe for date loaf... I never liked Christmas pudding, so my Chrissy dessert was a couple of slices of date loaf covered in warm custard. Yummm... now to figure out how to make it.:smallsigh:

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Lately I got into cheesecake. I had one soooo good that I was instantly converted. I'm afraid it's going to be downhill from that one...But it's a path I've chosen.
And yeah, wikipedia is the best source for food porn.

No. I'm mixing my food nationalities. Panacookas are like crepes, but thicker(and tasier). They are a recipe from my Mom's dutch side of the family.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Does anyone else here make Aebleskiver? Those things are the most delicious tiny dutch pancakes ever. It takes a special pan to make, though. Like a muffin tin crossed with a frying pan.

Ahhh...Our panqueques are very similar to that. I think they are made like crepes too.
And the dulce de leche part? Where'd you get that?
-

You need a REASON for Dulce de Leche?
-
Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
I'm strangely picky when it comes to my desserts... I don't like mixing my dairy and my fruits, hate peel, don't like toooo sweet, don't like coffee, cream or mint. So yeah, I like the idea of tiramisu, and I've had one that I could appreciate for being mostly tasty except it had mangoes (or was it peaches?) in it and the juice got everywhere and curdled the custard and so on, but I've never really come across one I particularly like. The cream is the most frustrating part, though: a dessert without cream is a rare one indeed :smallsigh: I think I might be building up a tolerance, though.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Howsabout this. It's delicous, amazing in fact, and you MUST have it.
I call it Strawberries and Mouth.
Ingredients:
Strawberries, to taste.
Recipe. Go outside. Buy strawberries. Come home, resisting temptation. wash. Hold up by stem, and savour individually.
Done.
It is EXCELLENT. Better than almost everything except Waldorf Pudding Cake, Tiramisu, Creme Caramel and maybe, JUST maybe, whipped cream from can.

My Dad spent some time in Argentina and brought back a bunch of good food ideas.

Possibly?
I was just saying that that is where I got the idea for Dulce de Leche. Then we tried it on the panacookas and found it to be a good mix.
