Besides, didn't he send in that Dreen (that creepy thing that looked like a L4D Witch in a bee keeper costume) to fetch her? She certainly seemed like the type you would send into a dangerous situation, when you really wanted to get the job done.
What happened to that thing anyways?

Ah, I like it when every few months or so a character succeeds at something.

Because it contains an explanation of the word HUP and also that is playgrounder Sir Six getting harassed.

For all the Dreen's awesomeness, it would appear Tarvek, Agatha, and the General simply ran away from it. It may not be able to move forward as fast as a human.
Also, I would imagine the Knights and the Bloodstone Paladins are attacking it and trying to drive it back...

It just feels chaotic, like it's not really going anywhere.
It's clear from today's comic that powering up the zappy stick will be important to the story of how this battle goes. So it wasn't a digression. It wasn't random. People seem to have a tendency to say that about the comic every five minutes, that it's always getting distracted because it's not focusing on whatever it is they think it should be focusing on at this particular moment, but the Foglios are pretty good at this, and all those digressions that don't really matter end up mattering before all is said and done. So, me, I just go with it.

There is one problem with this. Look at the previously mentioned dreen for example. It is presented as some super-powerful, unstoppable creature that even the jägers are afraid of, and it wants to kidnap Agatha. Then from one strip to the next it disappears and we didn't hear from it since then. If we just switched to another scene not involving Agatha & co. then I might say that yes, however annoying, maybe it's an important scene. But Agatha moved on without mentioning how the dreen is dealt with.

Dreen is/was being slowed by the red horse clank things and tarvek's replacement. Powerful and unstoppable doesn't mean that the dreen would also be super fast & efficient as well.

Its just completely UNNECESSARY!
We don't know the full extent of the power in GG (We almost never do). She could have just set it to "High setting" or something similar. Whip out an extra battery.
This was just a dilly dally distraction.

Of course, the zappy stick always breaks or is otherwise useless at inopportune moments. This minor digression just makes sure that won't happen again.

Oh, sure, because if she suddenly was like, "Oh, look, Gil had it turned down to the low setting. I'll just flip this switch and make it 10 times as powerful," you wouldn't be crying foul at all. THAT would be poor writing. Girl Genius is meant to be read long-form. They're graphic novels. 4 pages devoted to explaining how they upgraded a weapon that will be important to the plot is nothing at all. Since it takes you a week and a half to read it a page every couple days it seems like a big departure. When you read it in context in the finished book, it will fit, just like everything else.

Re: Girl Genius XIII: "Gott's Leedle Feesh in Trousers!"
I disagree. GG plays fast and loose with the inventions. Ones that should be revolutionary are just played for laughs and levels of power fluctuate madly.
Lets see how important this power boost is. I doubt it will be.

As to why we went on this diversion. There are lots of things between where Agatha et all are and where they want to be. She doesn't want THIS to happen again. This makes the stick worse than useless. So we are going to improve it. For all the complaints that Girl Genius is arbitrary and silly, it actually tries to call back to old plot points, if not old jokes.
Also, we get to see things like "Dere iz a squad of bloater tanks comink dis vay!" "Ve iz on our vay to meets dem. *Hat Tip*" in this diversion.
Also, Othar Tryggvassen is the best part finder. I especially love the "Rummage Rummage" sound effect.

Yep. That's even worse then how they ended the Life of Pi movie.
I mean, really. They basically said "Oh, by the way? Every single thing presented as fact over nearly the entire movie? May or may not be a hallucination."

That's how they ended the book too.

But that time, they replaced all the animals over the course of the story with humans. Among other switches, the tiger became a rapist who was employed on the ship as a cook.

I guess my point is that it's true to the source, as well as being obnoxious and dissatisfying.

Huh. Well. Not watching that film then. xD

Sounds like the director didn't learn from his failures.

In your opinion anyway.
About the only thing that springs to mind that could be considered an asspull is Agatha's glowing blue Science Goddess moment during the disease arc, but even that has a good cause (Dyne water to a Heterodyne plus electroshock from Castle Otilla).
-
Re: Girl Genius XIII: "Gott's Leedle Feesh in Trousers!"
I meant that the entire POINT of GG is the whacky inventions everybody can conjure up in seconds.
I continue to point to Agathas death ray that could blast through mountains miles away.

Actually, while Agatha's death ray was just there one moment (not already established but needing to be more powerful, so saying the zappy stick could be the same is ridiculous), it never would have been created without the disease arc, you know that big story that everyone complains was pointless but actually created the opportunity within the story for quite a few important things to happen to advance the "main story."
What's that, you'd like examples? Happy to. The disease story arc gave Agatha relevant story reasons to create a death ray, traverse the castle to find Gil, have a confrontation with Zola and then bring her along, have a confrontation with the doctor and with Von Pinn, create the giant tunnel that revealed Lucrezia's secret lab, discover the problem of the castle's power supply, recruit a new smoke knight minion, cause potential trouble for Tarvek's succession to the Storm King throne, find the great movement chamber, meet up with the castle/muse, etc. etc.

It's possible that Agatha could have built that death ray in second, simply because I don't think that Von Zinzer would continue trying to wake her up for hours afterward.

Wait, I thought that the ship's cook was the Zebra...
Because the Tiger was the last human left, right? The tiger was Pi.

 It's been a while. However, this is all technically OT for a Girl Genius thread.

Nah. Don't you remember? "A strong Heterodyne will take about two hours to truly warp the laws of nature."

Re: Girl Genius XIII: "Gott's Leedle Feesh in Trousers!"
I for one am not saying that the staff upgrade isn't unnecessary; they did a good job explaining the motivation behind it. I also get it that they're trying to get from one place to another, in a middle of a war zone, so they might as well pick up some needed parts, along the way.
However, the attitude of the past few strips have been so nonchalant that you don't realize that there's a super powerful bounty hunter after them, while an enemy army is buzzy blowing up (or at very least preparing to blow up) the entire town.
None of this is me saying that the comic is bad, just that I don't feel the sense of urgency in these past few pages. With that being said and done, I really did like the part with Othar.

It's just Sparks At Play -- they never seem too concerned about mortal peril when they're working on something interesting. And the Jaegers are just being Jaegers, of course.
The Dreen, as has been established, are being delayed by Tweedle and move at an unknown speed. They may be very dangerous when close but despite their reputation they weren't able to defeat even a single Hive Engine with the close support of the Baron's top fighters -- let alone on their own. So the Dreen obviously have some sort of disadvantages that haven't been fully explained as of yet. If they didn't, Our Heroes would be very dead now wouldn't they :smallamused:
-
Re: Girl Genius XIII: "Gott's Leedle Feesh in Trousers!"
OK, Damn you people. Now you've got me thinking in tropes. My wild guess is that the Dreen represent a maneuver that I will dub "summon bigger Whorf". Dragon is scary, but not as scary as lightning enhanced Franz. Both dragons (apparently) scatter when KoJ power-mechs land. The KoJ then demonstrate the Dreen to be fatally uncompressable, and ranking scary thing on the field.
The Dreen even have the awesome and terrible power (to a Jager) of instantly recovering their hats after a massive attack.
I'm thinking this would make toasting the now scarily established Dreen with the lightning stick lance the perfect proof of concept, and a great way for the Lady to re-establish battlefield dominance.
All wild conjecture of course.
(And what better way to flirt with Gil than to show him what she can do with his stick?)

New meaning to the phrase , "Rekindling the old spark"?
