Maybe I should put it this way. Up until now they have been fighting other things. This time they are fighting the protagonist. Only when the protagonists fight are the battle like this. :smalltongue:

Still, it seems like kinda an important detail to just skim over in their training.
(also, plenty of cut-scene fights occur in Tales games =P)

She clearly Knows About Timed Hits. :smallwink:
(What is this? DMC in my JRPG? Unpossible!)

Hmm, how to end this with a succinct explanation. They know how to fight what we would consider normal battles, but were unprepared for the JRPG battle format that accompanies battles with the protagonist of the JRPG, because this is the beginning of the game/story, and the protagonist has just appeared.
In any case, it's a parody comic, and this is just the first battle, so just roll with it.
They're will be MORE jokes on battle-styles, believe me. Stay tuned.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Cool. Just to make sure is it turn based or just hack nī slash. Also that guard can take an awfull lot of beating, 537 dammage, and he survived, and the girl has 760.

"Hack-and-slash" is close enough. It's actually called the linear motion battle system or something similar...
And the first fight in a tales game starts with an instructional section for practice which doesn't let any damage be done (though you can see how much WOULD be done)
EDIT: And i just noticed that she fought all of the three knights already... XD

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Nice combat scene you've got there. Am I the only one that found it funny that it was the protagonist that got to teach someone (an enemy to boot) how combat works and not the other way around?
Also liked the death effect, it was a cool way to show it, but I think it could have some sort of sound effect.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Lolz. I'm going to lay money on the fact that it's an actual video game, sometime in the future. Right at the critical moment, a main character dies, and the camera (metaphorically speaking) pulls back to reveal to teenagers playing their old consoles. Just a suggestion. More humor. ;).

Oh. So how much health do they got then?

Judging from the number of blows these took? Somewhere around 170 (the first two both took between 111-173 and 47-173 before dieing, the last one took 98-201)

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Just realized they said that they're not recruits, but the combat screen says they are. :smallamused:

This is a parody. It's good that you found it funny. With the exception of Vesperia, the only one in which this occured that I've played, the first enemy fought were humans and the protagonist, Yuri, in the case of Vesperia, as opposed to Luca in Innocence, had more battle experience than the knights that he had fought.

Yeah, that's why I had to explain the thing in my other post. Any suggestions for a blowing-up esque death sound effect? Cause, in JRPG, enemies vanish when they die. I guess what Vesperia did was cool.

I didn't realize that this would cause so much worry for readers. They are recruits, they were just bluffing Aria into thinking that they were tougher than they seem. The battle just confirms this.

I had a plan for something like this, but not as grand as introducing teenagers playing the game. But messing with the game, yes.

I was thinking of that sound the other Tales games did when an enemy died. At least as far as I remember they make a sound, it has been a while since I've played.

I was just explaining that I thought it was funny too, that's why I put it in the comic, and sited Yuri knowing more about fighting than Adecor and Boccos in the first battle of Tales of Vesperia, despite it also being the tutorial fight.
As for the sound it's like a whoosh and a crack at the same time, with Vesperia added what sounds like a bell tinkle.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Question: Are we going to have some pos battle scene with random banter?

First battle. White opaque cross-star is the death animation, which is hard to animate in a panel-based 2-D comic. The next comic will be a continuation of this battle, so this isn't the end, if you think this battle is missing something.
See Saturn? this is trying to balance mechanics placement.
I am thoroughly satisfied. This is very good for a first battle as far as first battles go. Let's see Aria fight that important looking guy leading the recruits next.
Or, or or! A battle summary page, a comic where she loots the gp/money/gold of the recruits as a reward. Muwahahahaha. Then +exp, and skill points.
I want to make fanart. But alas, I have another long day at work tomorrow!

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Very nice, this will join the list of webcomics to follow.
One curiosity, maybe I missed it, is she supposed to be wearing short pants?

Yes, well they're supposed to be those typical short shorts you see on JRPG/anime characters. I guess she would have something else on her legs, but these are stick figures, so there's a limit to what they can have.

Some nice character designs you've got here. Speaking of which, guess who needed drawing practice? :smalltongue:

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Gasp! First fanart! And from Prime32. Saturn you've been beaten to it. :smalltongue:
Anyway, nice work, but for future reference, and I know it's hard to see but, Aria has two belts. The second is the the same gray color as the lines on her armor. Result, a bonus image to show what I mean. Warning, big.
Aria'a avatar, enlarged.
As for what her armor actually looks like, I quickly sketched and penned what I currently imagine it to look like. I messed up on the left shoulder; it's too wide compared to the rest of the body. Also the pencil gauntlets are because I'm not sure if I want to give her gauntlets. Remember, fully drawn (sketched) status pictures will be coming, once I get better at drawing people. Prime32 I have your same problem with knees. I think I just got elbows down. Warning, also large.
Aria's armor sketch.
The problem is that there is only so much you can fit on to MY avatars at least *cough* everyone else: Prime32, Tsofu, Saturn, August *cough*. I guess I imagined her with sleeves because I thought shoulder pad to arm looked weird on her. Compared to Lightning (FFXIII), who has a more tightly fitting shoulder pad and a cape on her other shoulder. And sleeves will always look weird but sometimes necessary to me in OotS avatars.
Anyway, comic should be up in a few days. Two maybe?

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
You're doing fine with the details (I'm surprised at the quite high level of them, to be frank), it'd be a nightmare to make a comic based around highly detailed characters. At least I would be dreaming nightmares about it.
Oh, and congratulations!
*Edit*
Although I think you might want to make that grey line on the shoes more noticeable if you want us to notice it. :smallwink:

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Here's my fanart.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1.../ariaslice.png
EDIT: I didn't think that my avatars have that much detail on it. I try to keep it rather simple and not spend hours over hours on an avatar for something you can't even see. I might add certain things, but the line-thickness generally stays the same. That means no minute details that require a higher resolution.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
New comic is up, along with a finished but still bad full drawing of Aria. Expect something like it for the status image. Also, Tsofu, these are the details I would like to have on Aria but am unable to because they are just stick figures, and too much detail, though possible, in undesirable for me.
I drew it too high, so I had to add paper at the top, but them the hair came out too tall. Oh well.
Completed Aria sketch
And small fix, during battle, character portraits are supposed to have a neutral face. In the last comic Aria was smiling. They only smile when they win. Future comics will have this problem fixed.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
HAhaha, I like how the item menu pauses the enemy. I'd like to see how that can perhaps be abused more. Internal dialogues happen so much in as a time-stop ability.
The art style is great TK. It's very clean and pleasing to the eye.
