Given that discussion seems to have died down a little, I'd like to get some feedback and stir things up a little bit.
Who is your favourite character so far and why? And who is your least favourite character?
Feedback only serves to help me improve!
Fave:
Wendy. Her... ninja looting skills, her charm, her eagerness to learn Thaumaturgy.
Least Fave:
Hmm... :smallfrown: That implies I had made an opinion that there's a character who's not interesting. If I were going to say who's the most villainous, I'd say Casper the Unfreindly Ghost. Who I dislike as a character, though... I... :smallconfused: :smallfrown: can't help you.
Favorite: Casper. We have no idea what he does, what his true power is, or what he actually is about. He also knows what he's doing, making him dangerous and unpredictable (to the reader, at least). All in all, he's an enigma, which makes him the most interesting character so far. It's all about wondering exactly what he's planning and what he's going to do next. Plus, he looks awesome.
Least favorite: Probably Kentucky. He's had almost no character development, and all I know of him is that he's a jerk and wants the farm. He has a clear goal, is a jerk about it (so no manipulative bastard points), and generally remains uninteresting so far, whereas most of the rest of the characters have at least some form of motivation that makes for dynamic and/or unpredictable. He doesn't even have any powers himself that make him interesting! The fact that he's been next to Casper decreases his awesome, as well. He is in direct comparison to Casper in the Notable Evil Dude department, and is completely overshadowed.
Fav: Frederick Kong. How can you resist his broad, naïve smile?
Least fav: Ol' Hickory, maybe?
Also I can't hate Kentucky because his silly hair looks like the crest of a rooster, which really drives the point home that his name is a pun on a fried chicken fast food franchise. Poor guy. :smalltongue:
I don't normally do this but,Herp to the Derp, this is what I get for not looking back one or two pages.
New page is up.
Okay, Death cards. The ability to accelerate decay processes.
Do we have any idea what to call this again?
No, that is a new page...
Casper, did you cast that without using a chant? :smalleek:
I really hope it's just that it wasn't shown. Chantless miracles make for scary sophers.
Fav: Most likely Nomen, because of something.. I don't know what.. It could be the stutter just throws something I can't put my finger on it, He seems like he is caring more baggage then he lets on.
Less Fav: Kentucky, because he doesn't fight his battles, but that's just because of personal experiences and people like that in my life that are annoying has hell.
Other then that, then the reminder of the hell-spawn I know, it's going great.
I'm glad there's quite a variety of favourites here!
One of my goals for Thaumaturge was designing and writing interesting characters. I'm not sure if I succeeded with everything I wanted to do, but just seeing that almost everybody has a different favourite makes me happy. I did write Kentucky as a character that has almost no redeemable features, so it's not surprising to me that he's one of the least favourites.
Anyway, I'm planning on adding some "Making Of" pages at the end of every chapter. They'll mostly detail how a character is developed and some personal notes on each of them. Is there any interest in this?
Liking the new Avatar, Elagune!
Would the Making-Of pages be in addition, or instead of the list of miracles used that chapter? I would like both, if possible, but if you had to go with one or the other, I would want the list of miracles.
Perhaps one character per chapter (2 for chapter 2, due to none for chapter 1)? Or 2 for 1 page, 1 page per chapter? It would not slow down the story line too much, but still satisfy fan craving for... :smalltongue: whatever it is that makes us want them.
Actually, he has two redeeming features: first, he's comic relief so it's hard to truly loathe him. Secondly, he's clearly not the actual villain, since Casper seems to actually be the one in command.
As far as interesting characters go, I think Mr. Ranchman and Ms. Mom are a bit flat at the moment. I guess they'll acquire more depth as time passes since it has been the Wendy & Nomen Show so far.
Lord almighty, Caspar's arms are MASSIVE O.O
I'm still on the fence about Casper. He seems powerful, but he hasn't really done anything to make him a fearsome villain beyond trying to get his own team-mates killed. Time will tell whether he has the skills to back up that attitude or he's just pushing Kentucky around.
Call me judgemental, but the apperance of his costume alone makes me give the guy a lot of credit. :smalltongue:
I intend on developing Mom and Rancherman further soon, but for now the focus is on Casper. Every important character will get their turn in the spotlight!
For now, I've got a new Manga Magazine Mirror. Drunkduck seems to have a lot of problems when it comes to being up, and this will help me reach a larger audience. As a celebration, there's also new cover art!
Anyway, that's it so far. I'm still unsure of whether or not to do the character pages, but I'm leaning towards it. The spell list as well. If I do decide to go with either, I'm planning on putting an extra page up to make up for Chapter 1 not having it.
...Will it be on both sites, or are you dropping DD? :smallconfused:
I have to say, I see the comments on the new site are more... well, there's more of them :smalltongue:. But judging by what they are saying, and judging by the few mangas/animes I've seen so far, I would probably guess there aren't many artists of your caliber out there.
I'm wondering what you do for a living (art wouldn't surprise me), and why no-one's offered to pay big bucks to put your works in all major stores (though I don't know where I'd find manga stores, except maybe the mall up in the province capital). It's certainly one of the better stories I've read, comic form or not, second probably only to The Lord of the Rings... And if you did a manga-form retelling of that, it would outdo everything, ever. :smalltongue:
Seriously, Elagune. When I was introduced to Bibliography, it was the first manga/anime I had any interest in reading. And Thaumaturge is very, very good too; You are a genius of an artist.
Elagune told me that he is currently putting Thaumaturge on both sites.
Caspar: "GIVE ME YOUR FACE."
Yep, the comic is going to be mirrored on Manga Magazine. I find the new site much faster and much less obnoxious with the ads, so I'm pretty happy with it so far. The Drunkduck user interface leaves a little to be desired as well, since I can't seem to reorder my pages how I want.
Anyway, extras have popped up on Manga Magazine! I was trying to get them onto Drunkduck as well, but the previously mentioned user interface screwed me over, so I won't be able to put them on DD until Chapter 2 comes to a close.
Here's the three extra pages of material. Warning: a lot of reading involved.
So we now have comfirmed names of each of the sopher elements, but I'm unsure about the name associated with them. Does it refer to a spirit, deity, or founder, and are they an active force that affects sophers or just a myth that many sophers believe in?
Hehe, Earth is the domain of stupidity
How do the emotions factor into the sopher's techniques? Is it like bending from avatar that requires a certain mindset to perform well?
I actually like how the elements have, more often than not, positives and negatives, rather than just all-positive or all-negative ideals.
The page makes me wonder, though- what exactly can Chronosophy and Kernosophy do? They seem, out of the box, like some of the more powerful elements- control over time and space. What's the drawback/limitation on someone using them?
