Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Yes, the subtitle is a Calvin and Hobbes reference.
Cover Page
Current Comic (#16)
Archive found here.
Banners, since I finally finished them and I'm too lazy to work the code out next time I want to change my sig...
This comic is jointly created by my little brother (not on this site) and me. He's responsible for the idea, the story, and 90+% of the jokes. I do the art, ~10% of the story and jokes, and put it up on here.
Trying for a weekly update schedule again, probably on Sundays. We'll see how long it lasts...

artillary would SMASH them when attacking this valley..
i need to stop thinking how i would conquer the place when reading/watching these things...:smalleek:

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Fortunately for the inhabitants of this world, there is no artillery here :smalltongue:

It's not like princesses have much of a choice in the matter usually... thus, an high-level adventurer should be marginally better than the incompetent and slightly perverted heir-apparent of the neighbouring kingdom, as clichè demads it. Or not?
Also, Yay to the comic.

Hey, it's a fairy tale, not the actual middle ages :smalltongue: In fairy tales, the princesses have a right to actually be in love with their husbands, and not that silly Oh-of-course-I-love-you-because-you-rescued-me junk that gets passed off in so many stories and always drives me nuts :smallannoyed:

You do realize that, while they might not have artillery, they do have dragons, right?
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
So? i have artillary ON dragons!
man i must stop thinking about this.
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
I LOVE it!
Totally worth the wait and all the teasers :smalltongue:
Especially like the map of the two countries looking remarkably like they're nestled within the vast, sharp-toothed mouth of a nasty monster
And all the detail is just incredible. Awesome

That was, er, totally deliberate. Yeah, I, um, had that in mind all along. Not. But I like the image :P

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Haha, that guy has three ace of diamonds in his hand.
Yay for nice webcomic that is only on it's first strip but is getting relatively low amounts of attention in a place where popularity is very competitive and viewership rather low because IMO the fan-comic page is one of the least visited subforum.
Sorry for lack of punctuation in the last sentence. My grammar teacher would not be proud. Haha.

See everyone? These are good image quality comics. I have yet to master to master their high polygon secret. Awesomely drawn comic too.

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Oooh, nice start to a webcomic. I like it a lot.
Is it just me or does the guy "slaying" the dragon looks kinda Guybrush Threepwood-y? (For those who don't get the reference, yeah, I'm old :smalltongue:)
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Yeah, I wouldn't recommend playing a game with that card player (there's a reason he's got the most money :smallwink:).
I wouldn't know about the dragon slayer being Guybrush-y; I've never played Monkey Island (:smallfrown:). I'll let you tell me when you've seen him a bit more.
And thanks everyone who's said they like it

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Savannah, I must ask, how do you export your comics from, I think I remember you using, Inkscape? If not Inkscape, please disregard this.
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
I don't think I do anything unusual...(and, yes, I use Inkscape). I create a temporary layer under everything and put a box on it that just covers the area I want to export. Then I make that layer invisible while I've got the box selected, so that I have the correct area selected but I won't export the box as well. I look at the size of the box in pixels (at the top of the page), and when I get to the export options, I make sure the exported picture's size is the same as the box, so that I don't accidentally resize my comic while I export. And that's it. Did that cover what you wanted to know? I'm not quite sure what you're asking :smallconfused:

Looks like that marrying you after rescuing her from the Most Cunning and Highly Flatulent green Dragon known as Scourge of Texas isn't going to happen anytime soon.
As a side note, I am already fond of the 'NO!' guy.

The best part is that you did not deny Prince Charming actually being incompetent and slightly perverted. :smalltongue:

That's exactly what I was looking for. The problem is that everyone follows that method shown by Trazoi in his guide, but everyone seems to be getting better image quality results than I. Oh well. :smallsigh::smallbiggrin:
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Hmm, that's odd...:smallconfused: As far as I know, the image quality isn't going to be affected during exporting, no matter what you do. (Although if you then import the image you just exported into Inkscape, it will look very pixelated.) What sorts of problems are you having?
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Nothing serious; it's probably just my own eyes and brain telling me my art will never be as good as some other people. It's probably perfectly fine, I'll just go back to finishing my comic now.
If you are still curious, peer closely at any of my comics and compare it to yours, and check if the various edges of stuff are blurred.
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Yours look just fine to me... (And your art is quite nice, so, erm, stop listening to your eyes and brain :smalltongue:)
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Ah, yes! You've got it up and running at last. The wait was so worth it.
I love it! Can't wait to see more.

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Wait wait wait, I can't comprehend this...
A fan comic... That looks good... both in writing and art?
WTH?
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Yeah, now it's up to whether Savannah can keep it up with a routine schedule. That can be a difficult thing to do. I had an OotS-style webcomic a long time ago and it didn't last very long. Then... the story and art wasn't that great either.

 Now, now, I've seen some other good ones. Sadly, most didn't last long... (Writing-wise, I think it helped that my brother and I had the story idea long before we got this started. It started as two separate ideas, actually, one about an adventuring hero heavily based on the Asterix and Obelix comics, and one about writing the story "Why Prince Charming Stayed Single". Then they ended up getting combined somehow, and only then did I get the idea to do it as an OotS-style comic. So the plot's been around for ages, and I know exactly where I'm going with it.)

Well, the good news is that anytime I'm at all stuck on the script, I can just call my brother and it always seems to work itself out within 10 minutes. Co-authors are awesome. And I waited to post this until I had five strips made, so I know it will last for at least a little while :smallwink: (And, even if I can't keep up the schedule, I can promise that it won't ever truly die -- we've got the whole plot laid out until the very end, and we're planning on giving it to our family for a Christmas present sometime (you all are kinda a test audience :smalltongue:), so it will get done eventually.)

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
I love the :smalleek: expression everyone has in the 6th panel, and the blue and green ladies restraining Lady Red herself: I like the girl already (and if she has just a walk-on part...I like her all the same).

Agreed. One doesn't cross Lady Red lightly  Those three remind me of the three girls in Beauty and the Beast who were after Gaston - same clothes just different colours.
I love it - is it wrong that the king reminded me of Elan?
Also - the lightening is an awesome touch

Not really; he reminds me a little of Elan, too. I tried really hard to make it so that he didn't, but the fact is any stick-figure with that style of blond hair looks a little like Elan...
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Slaying the dragon is easy? Not the way I've heard it. :smalltongue:
Looks great. Will follow. If it's all the same to you, could you not look behind yourself too often? It'll make my job that much easier. :smalltongue:again

True, and it was the blonde hair that made me think Elan at first... but then he consolodated it with the ditzy blonde-ness
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
He hasn't been too ditzy yet, just easily bored. I can see him being way more selfish, and maybe a little bit more nasty. Looking forward to learning more about the characters!
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Very nice comic.
I especially like the art, it's just like OOTs.
And, important, it has a lot of detail. I'm missing that in other fancomics.

Eh, the constant 'wanna do this?' "boring" makes me think ditzy.

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
See, I don't think that Elan would be thrilled that his fiancee got captured because that means that he now has something to do...

Ahhh, okay, I missed that he was the one getting married. Ignore everything I said previously in that case
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Well, technically, it isn't stated until the first panel of the next strip :smalltongue: (And, really, I doubt Elan would be thrilled anyone was kidnapped just because he was bored and wanted something to do.)

Actually, I see Elan having the opposite problem. He is too easily entertained :smalltongue::
:smallannoyed:: "You want to see the royal jester?"
:elan:: "YES! Oooh, I know, we could masquerade as hippopotami and play a tune in the town square!"
:smallconfused: "Uhm...maybe not. Maybe you'd like to visit the royal wine cellar?"
:elan:: "Yes! Yes! And I coud bring Haley and Roy and Banjo and all my friends and then we could go on a trip I like trips and do they have a lot of wine and can I have some, and can Durkon come too and I also have a lollipop?"
:smalleek:: "..."
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Hahahaha, yeah, that sounds about like Elan :smallamused: I notice you didn't include "consulting" with Lady Red in your example there :smalltongue:
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
That's just because he had the Cousellor speechless after the first two... :smalltongue:
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
I found it funny that the king was saying bored until something was said about a dragon
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
hm... considering the fact that the two nations are at peace with each other, and consider the mountains a natural barrier, I think it's reasonable to assume that niether of them have particularly strong armies. this is reinforced by the fact that the princess was kidnapped so easily from the kingdom that wouldn't necessarily let it happen based on how much like a fairy tale it is. considering this, any remotely sizeable army could probably take the valley, especially if they use a series of scare tactics.
unfortunately, I'm not seeing any major waterways to take control of to allow for easier mobility or creation of supply lines to the front. on the other hand, it means that there are few to no major natural obstacles to overcome once your forces have crossed the mountains. in addition, the fact that the majority of the valley isn't heavily forested suggests that cavalry would be quite effective, especially taking into account the likely difference in numbers and training.
The biggest obstacle, frankly, is crossing the mountains, especially since there don't seem to be any well tread passes through them. the key is finding a pass, flying over them, or digging a tunnel through them. I'd recommend drilling through them, if possible, because you'll be able to move troops through faster than through a pass, and you'd lose less men to exposure. also, steadier footing for the horses.
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
and with magical siege engins nothing will stand in your way without being destroyed.
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
...you guys are spending way too long analyzing the defenses of a fairy-tale kingdom :smalltongue:
Also, it's Sunday:

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
I like the two headed minion. He is (...they are? :smallconfused:) cute.
Also, love he way you drew the horse.
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Agreed. The horse is awesome
I like the bad guy, for some indefinable reason I'm having trouble putting my finger on, he's amusing - I think it's the monologing
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Gotta agree, that horse is well-drawn.
And this villain is cool. I love his two-headed henchman!
-
Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
I traced a real horse, so I can't take total credit for it :smalltongue: And I'm glad you like the villain and minion.

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
The follow-up follow-down tower panel is just great and so is the horse - the 'Evil inside' disappointed me a little this time, though, a tad too static.

Re: Hero's Quest (or, Why Prince Charming Stayed Single)
Another thing I'm wondering: are those blood stains on the villain's outfit, or something more mundane, say, barbecue sauce for instance?
