That was pretty much gold. Really fun, and that monocle is magnificently glorious.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
Is it worth starting this comic if you don't know much of anything about Warhammer 40,000? I'm rather intrigued by its length and apparent staying power, but I gather WH40K is one of the main sources and I'm not sure whether familiarity with it is required to understand the comic.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
The staying power is mostly due to my stubbornness than anything else.
Don't worry, although it features a bunch of 40k characters, the setting and story isn't too 40k-centric.
However those who know little or nothing about 40k won't find this funny.
Ask the Custodes episode 12: Praise Be to Lord Melta is up.
It's actually a comic-ified remake of this thing so...yeah. WARNING: Contains mild profanity

Fire Dragons = Stormtroopers confirmed.
Gotta love the Custodes' expressions during that.

When I started this comic, I knew nothing of WH40K besides it's existence, and roughly what the God Emperor and the 4 Chaos Gods were. And It certainly didn't prevent me from enjoying it.
After all these years, every now and then, something I didn't quite understand would make me interested to the point of reading a bit of extra information on the wiki, like the ALL-HAIL-MIGHTY custodes. It certainly made things funnier, but even if I hadn't I know I would've enjoyed it anyway.
Of course, like Rand said, this doesn't apply to the extras. Those are heavy on the WH40Kness, like in this case. I had never even heard of the Meltaguns, but just this strip makes me understand what they represent and what the joke is.
Sincerely, someone who's never played a single WH (40K or Fantasy) game.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
Okay, sounds like I'll give it a try, then.
Though I may be periodically posting questions here as I archive-binge.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
Isn't the later part of the archive in need of being updated? I'm not sure if Emperor Ing ever got around to do that.
But, by all means, you're safe for the first 8 or so chapters.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
Yeah, I haven't updated the archives past Comic 580. Apologies, i'm lazy.
In the meantime, here's Comic 664. I'll try to update at least the main storyline archives for you.
Edit: MAIN STORYLINE ARCHIVES UPDATED YO

You know, I'm not surprised that works. Also, get something blueish/purpleish Marnia! It brings out your eyes.
Storyline aside, there's a minor problem with the bubble at pannel 4. New art looks good, but Torn's head size and buffed up-ness really caught me off guard. Probably, just because I'm not used to it.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
I've barely begun archive-binging, but I took a moment to look at the new art style, and while I hope this doesn't come across too harshly, I have to say that the lizard people look jarringly different from how they appear on the banner and presumably the rest of the comic (though the human characters aren't too bad).
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
I only JUST recently begun using the new art style, so expect changes to be made progressively. I do want to update the banner eventually though.
Though yes, the transition is rather...dramatic to say the least. Here's the example side-by-side I use. Same character, same pose, same outfit, different art style

Also, here's Comic 664 Fix'd
665 coming eventually.

If I had to point to a specific problem with her, I'd say it's the completely different facial shape. The more detailed limbs aren't much different from OOTS's own art upgrade, and the human characters (from what I've seen) still have the same circular heads, but the lizard people are going from an oval shape to something that reminds me of a dolphin more than anything else.
Again, I feel bad for just coming in here and criticizing the new art style (particularly because I'm not a long-time reader of the comic and have only just begun going through the archives), but it just seems too different to me and I feel like it's going to be a struggle to deal with when/if I finally catch up.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
I get your point. Over 600 comics, it's completely expected to see a comic change art styles. You can see it in almost any comic that runs long enough, and even in some sprite comics. However these changes are gradual improvements in art style that are tiny changes accumilated over months and years. The transition from Comic 661 to 662 is NOT a gradual change but a complete lateral shift, a massive overhaul of the overall character art style. The abrupt change feels jarring.
It's almost unexpected, is it not? :smallamused:
That said, I changed my art style because the limitations of OotS were starting to become noticeable as I found I needed more expressive characters that can rotate their faces in more interesting ways. I was already experimenting with this art style for at least a year prior so I figured this was a good solution. As seen on Comic 663 i'll still use OotS style, but only limited to flashback, dream, and other sequences to help differentiate it from the main timeline (similar to how OotS uses crayon scribbles) I'll probably also keep using it in Black Crusadin' for consistency purposes. Beyond that, unless I can make a better art style or I become so sick of using this one I go back to OotS style, i'm going to keep using this art style. I have a lot more fun making it honestly. Admittedly it takes longer for me to put characters together, but in a way I do appreciate it since it requires me to put more thought into dialogue and characters.
If you don't like it or the the transition is too jarring, I do apologize, but for the foreseeable future this comic will be using the new art style. I would suggest you at least read the first 661 comics I have that do not use this art style as well as the 70+ Extras comics I have that also do not use this art style.
In the meantime, 665 is up. This means Comic 666 is next. Dear Omnissiah has it really come to this?

Yup
Comic 666 is up. I think it's safe to say i'm in a privileged or stubborn group, having reached the Number of the Beast mark :smalltongue:

Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
Yep.
The Emperor doesn't appear as often as it should, but I guess that's part of his charm.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
I'm up to the end of Chapter 4 of the archives now, and Comics 245 and 250 are 404 Not Founds. I've spotted a couple more looking ahead.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
I'm not looking forward to finding those comics again, or even having to remake them.
Comic 667 is up, however
Q? C? C?
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
Yeah, sorry if it's a pain, but I thought you might want to know.
I'm going to go and click through all of the remaining comics to see if there's any others missing.
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
Panic doesn't advance the plot!
Please, do continue. :smalltongue:

Perfectly understandable. I don't blame you. However looking through those two comics and the surrounding comics, I haven't a clue how they were originally supposed to go. :smallyuk: I'll see what I can do.
Ask the Custodes 9 Ep. 4 is up.

Wait, you had a plan for how this comic would go at one point?

What are you implying? The heavily convoluted and confusing plot of this comic can only be premeditated, carefully crafted by a genius mind!
Because if not....
Re: Well That was Unexpected Thread III: I Throw Comics at the Wall, You See What Sti
So I finished going through the archives today and wanted to offer a couple of quick thoughts.
The comic certainly lives up to its name - things kind of swerve all over the place, often at random. Some of it doesn't really work - much of Chapter 8 in particular seemed to completely alter on a moment's notice - but there's been a gradual improvement in keeping things coherent, so that's good. (In fact, the comic in general has seen a gradual rise in all-around quality, with two big peaks in particular). One thing that is very consistent throughout is the tone - while there's very occasional serious moments, and they actually are necessary, they've never taken over the comic as a whole as has happened with so many webcomics and I can't see them ever doing so, which I think is a good thing. The humor quality itself varies, but has also gradually risen.
I get the distinct impression that the plot isn't meant to be a highlight of the comic, but I actually enjoy it, though certainly not to such a degree that I'm going to object when the characters put it on hold to do some ridiculous random thing (I did think the Pokemon battle in Chapter 9 went on way too long, but that's partially just because I'm not really into Pokemon). There's actually some genuine moral ambiguity to the main conflict - if only from the reader's standpoint - and the plot twist in comic 560 was legitimately stunning and singlehandedly salvaged a character I was pretty uninvested in before that point.
On the subject of characters, my favorites are the Custodes by a long shot. Even with my very minimal knowledge of WH40K, they're pretty much gold in every strip they're in. I'd definitely read a comic focusing only on them (though I haven't tried "Ask the Custodes" because I get the sense that it is pretty WH40K lore-dependent) and I'm sort of amazed that they didn't show up for over 400 strips, because I can't imagine the comic without them. My only issue is that I can't really tell them apart.
Other favorite characters include Powers (BTW, I keep wondering: is his name a stealth pun?), Marnia, Xeno, and all the Hyptians - another set of characters I can't believe showed up as late in the comic as they actually did. Some of the others are kind of bland, but the only character I really consider a weak link is Kaylethia, who kind of lost her more interesting traits and came to feel sort of redundant.
Spoiler: Spoilered because I can't tell if this was something that we were meant to figure out or a future twist or what
Show
On the subject of Kaylethia - is she supposed to be the otherwise-unidentified metal-masked character who first appeared
here? Some of the comics seemed to indicate it, and they wear really similar longcoats, but it doesn't really feel right (and metal-mask appears to be a guy).
I could probably offer more criticism if you wanted - there's still a lot about the comic that's unpolished - but honestly, given that it kept me interested enough to read over 600 strips in a couple of weeks, most of it would just feel like petty nitpicking. (Although the new art style is still a very tough sell).
