!Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
"The sky is vast, and beneath it, the earth. Such is the truth from times long ago, and in present, and in times long from now. But this story starts in the past, as all true stories must, and it is the tale of the 4 warriors, ancient and wise, who took on the shapes of beasts and fought in the stars." Beginning of a Msitu Mkaazi tribal origin story.
The jungle is large, and hard to move through. The men and women chasing you, though, seem to have no problem with it. They wear Msitu masks, and though most of them are human, they jump from tree to tree in a way that suggests the supernatural.
Tree-shaker: You seem to have no problem outrunning most of them, save one man. A Dwarf, his skin pale as a ghost from time spent underground, pops from tree trunk to tree branch and back again like gazelle leaps across flat ground. Also, unlike the others, he seems to carry no weapon. You would turn and attack him, but the last time you tried, he moved so swiftly he became a blur, and gave you a nasty crack on the head. Better to hope for some opportune circumstance. Or so you have thought up until now.
Calamvir: You have taken the most ignoble insult a dragon should ever have to suffer. They caught you unawares and threw these satchels of gunk at you. A quick reaction mean that your legs were not caught, but your wings were stuck together, and have been for a while now. You feel that the crud has begun to harden, and then crack under your wing muscles. Any second now, you should be able to fly, and gain the advantage on this pitiful group of mortals. But for now, their mobility and seemingly perfect skill at their spearwork keeps you smashing through the forest. It really is quite shameful.
Gwylan: They can see you. That was the first thought when you saw their heads turn from across the clearing, something shiny flashing behind the holes of the masks. That they pointed at you after they saw you made you want to run. The brandished crossbows made you want to run faster. The hematite crossbow bolt thudding into the bark of the massive tree next to you made you fly faster than you ever had before. But they chased after you, and you were more focused on fleeing the deadly Cold Iron than you were with attacking back.
Tak: They can't see you. Yet. Oh, they were prepared to fight you, with spears that they wielded with skill. But they didn't expect you to run. And now, in a tree above a babbling brook, you calm your heartbeat and watch them come closer, and closer. Soon now, one of them will find you. This is not the ideal place to hide. You let your telepathy take over, to sense when they come near enough for you to strike...
Sy'Aldreth: You are quite interested in a peculiar specimen of insectoid creature in a tree across the stream, hiding from some more of those goons you killed earlier. They were prepared for the gas, but not the spines. Didn't do their research properly, tut tut. It seemed that whatever this thing across the river was, these people wanted it dead. And that was enough, for the moment at least, for you to take an interest.
Blue: You would have killed them. You could have ended them easily. But that big elf up front had something around his neck. It made your head hurt and the space between your ears go all fuzzy. So you ran, checking yourself as you nearly tripped and slipped over seemingly a million different obstacles. You ran long after you thought you'd lost them, finally splashing down in a stream of some sort. Nervously, listening for sound of pursuit, you wade down it hoping to find civilization.
-
Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Blue moves quickly, faster than most humans despite his small size. They'd pay, they'd all pay! Damn that elf and his...whatever that was. He dismisses his mindblade, it's glow would only help them find him sooner. But Blue was skilled in all manner of things, arts both martial and mental. They would regret attacking him, yes they would. He pauses to roll in the mud, hiding the metallic shine of his armor.
-
Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Ah, mortal men, so scared of what is stronger than they are, so eager to take arms against their fears, they sometimes should know better.
But still, they seemed quite prepared. These ones also seem quite prepared for their intended prey, and what prey it is, perhaps you will stalk it yourself afterwards, yesss...
Sy'Aldreth looks for a bush or small tree (a low obstacle that can grant cover) and takes root behind it, the river will be quite useful he thinks.
Once he is set, his first volley flies out against the Msitu hunters. His bias showing, he targets any men first.

Gwylan scowled as she flitted from tree to tree. Whoever these humans were, they were ready for her... They must have taken note of that little incident at the bridge... Silly humans, can't take a joke... It's not MY fault they couldn't fly.
She keeps moving, trusting her superior speed to keep her away from her pursuers... As she moves, she calls upon her fey powers to slow her pursuers.

Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Calamvir hisses, angered by the humans essentially clipping him. He'd come here in search of a story, well, looks like he got one. Hulking about he slides around the mud and dirt, smacking into tries as he strains to free his wings. He was a dragon damnit! He wasn't going to be taken down by some savages. Trning his head back he lets his Thuum loose, the most common one Black Dragons used "Withering Breathe" or Acid as the humans called it. It streamed forward, like a deadly spray of death, and he aimed it to hit as many of the hunters as possible. The sound of it shook the leaves and grass around him, the words innately powerful in and of themselves. Retracting backwards he continues to run, scampering about in the hopes of finding a river or some lizards for him to hide/charm.

Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Blue is marching down the river, armor covered in mud, when he sees/hears three projectiles whistling through the air above him. He flattens himself, and then looks up to see some...thing, apparently launching it's own spines at some target he couldn't see above the banks of the river. He can hear the thud of spines hitting tree trunks, but also shouts of pain. Or at least fear. He also hears, from somewhere, a huge booming voice shout a few words in a strange language, followed by more screaming. This jungle apparently contains more dangerous wildlife than he thought. And more pursuers.
Sy'Aldreth is grinning. His first spine broke in his hand, but the other two found their mark in the unsuspecting men across the river. He was aiming for the one, but the other tried to shove him out of the way and both of them got hit. Idiots. Both, one human and one dwarf, let out cries of pain as their allies jump from the sudden assault. A female with a bow stares across from where the spines came from and sees the abomination quickly. With practiced stance she draws and fires in a single, fluid motion, as her comrades duck behind trees, tending to the wounded. It doesn't look as though you killed either of them.
And, thanks to your roots, merely sticks the arrow into flesh, doing nothing more than superficial damage.
The jungle calls to Tree-shaker. He will have his river, even if it is only a stream. He leaps and bounds between trees, almost reaching the river before a huge shout nearby makes him turn. He sees some kind of green mist fly into the air a ways upriver, but he doesn't have time to stop. As he splashes down into the creek, he hears the dwarf jump down with him. So he turns. The dwarf's scrawny chest is heaving, his mask slightly askew. He holds his fists high in a typical boxer's stance though, as if his fatigue meant nothing.
Gwylan's plan was solid, but the execution left something to be desired. The Elven woman up front got smashed in the face by a groping branch, and was soon entangled in the mass of foliage. Both the humans that were with her though, stood aside and took their chance to shoot at the tiny fairy.
Spoiler
Show
Rolls borked. Real rolls in OOC. 1 crossbow hit and did 11 damage.
And one hit. It was somehow the most painful experience the Pixie had ever experienced, and yet also very, very familiar. The Cold Iron went through her, giant crossbow bolt tearing a gash in her side. Where it hit blazed with ice, and her head felt like it was going numb. Limply, she flew around to the other side of the tree, and came face to face with...something. It was big, it had a ton of spikes, and it had just been hit with an arrow. (It couldn't, of course, see her)
Calamvir's Thu'um did its job, which was of dual purpose. The green mist that flew from his jaws withered plants, fried trees, and made tiny mortals jump backwards with its force. Three of them fell on the ground, overcome by their injuries. Most of the rest hid behind trees. One didn't. The Orc ripped off his mask, and wiped his face and eyes, tears streaming from the caustic assault. Then he looked at Calamvir and with bloodshot eyes said in Draconic, "Come here, Dragon. Fight me not with your words, but your body, for it is that which I mean to destroy"
Tak would have jumped behind a tree from where she was, except that she saw something across the way start throwing sharp objects at her pursuers. They were distracted. Excellent. One man, apparently badly wounded from how pale he is, is being tended to by a woman who doesn't look like she knows what she's doing. Oh my! She rips the needle out. (very bad idea, even Tak knows that) And then puts her hands over the wound... Oh. It would seem she has a healing magic of some sort. Neither bother to shield their thoughts from the Xenomorph, and you catch glimpses of their emotions. Fear, is evident, as well as excitement. Tak realizes, as she catch snippets, that they were looking for some other monster in these woods when they found you. Something, glittery. Either way, no one is looking at them right now. It is the perfect opportunity...

Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Calamvir smiles at the orc, perhaps this wasn't a waste of time? Standing on his haunches Calamvir chortles and says "You have a string heart to stand up against a dragon by yourself. Perhaps your people will remember your futile efforts." He backs up to the nearest tree, rubbing his back against it to further break off the gunk from his wings. In the mean time he needed to keep the Orc distracted while he recuperated his Thuum "So, tell me, aside from the great glory that killing a dragon brings," he drips with sarcasm like it's the acid he breathes "Why did your tribe decide to assault me? I've done you no wrong." After the rubbing he'll go back on all fours and take up a fighting stance, ready to duel the Orc "Let us fight in single combat, Orc, and see who is greater..."
-
Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Calamvir:
The Orc just smiles as his eyes stop watering, showing off his impressive lower canines. "You've done my tribe every wrong I know how to describe. But that is unimportant. Revenge does not motivate me. Nor does it fuel me. Duty does. I have sworn to protect those who cannot protect themselves", he begins. You feel the bile begin to return to your throat. He's providing his own distraction. This just could not be more perfect. "And no one can protect themselves from a dragon. Well, present company excluded of course. Which is of course why I must be the one to destroy you. To protect others". As your Thu'um returns to you, you notice, the tiny sores on his body and discoloration as a result of the acid are, shrinking? He couldn't be healing, could he? He readies up, and just as the acid regenerates fully, he charges at you spear-first.
Gwylan:
They take the bait. Or, that is, they can't see through the dense canopy. So they rush up the trunk of the tree, trying to catch a glimpse of you, both reloading. But you are spiraling up in the air, away from them. You reach the actual tree canopy height, and burst through the leaves into a dazzling sunlight. It would take them a while to climb up the trees long enough to realize the extra canopy is an illusion, which you realize looking down on them from above. That being the case, you have some time to look around.
You see green stretching all around you, which is no surprise. Neither is the sky, which is a radiant blue, only just beginning to show the brightest lights in the starshows. You clutch at your side. Iron that has yet to be worked by man, still full of the burning hatred of the earth when it was first created, is the only kind of weapon that can damage you. But they knew that, and they brought it along. But why? They also had some kind of device to see through invisibility, which meant they were expecting a pixie, not some other fey. You are also smart enough to know that they aren't Msitu. For one thing, they were too pale to be ethnically from the region. For another, they showed a little too much skill in how they wove through the branches. Locals would step around them, but these people used the natural obstacles as braces to propel themselves forward faster. They were also climbing awfully fast. You will just have to deal with them somehow, unless you can just slip away.

Calamvir: Your spell hits the man, but glances off him as if it were no more than a ray of light striking a mirror. He runs forward, unheeding of your steady rise, until he gets within about 20 feet, at which point he screams "SMITE-". The tip of the spear shines blue-white, blindingly, like a flare or an open welding flame. "-EVIL" he finishes, as he throws the javelin-spear overhand, into the air towards you. Sy'Aldreth: you grin and unleash a new volley, unheeding of the little muddy goblin. The woman with the bow sees it coming and only has time to widen her eyes before a spine hits her right in the stomach. The other two are safely hidden by trees, not that your spines don't give them reason enough to keep their heads down. The bowwoman gives a gasp of pain, and then another as the acid starts to work. She falls to one knee, but then raises her bow and reaches for another arrow. This one has a tip made of some yellow material. It doesn't look friendly. She grunts in clear Confederate, "F--k You", before loosing the projectile.
It too, thunks uselessly against your carapace, as she ducks and tries to roll behind a tree, but ends up stumbling over behind it instead, dripping blood along the ground. You almost resist the urge to laugh. Almost. However, the laughter you feel is cut short too early, because the arrow she used was indeed, not a normal arrow. You feel flames there. The eerie plant-song rings through the forest, far and wide. It's magical effect may only effect those within 100 feet, but for about half-a-mile's distance it can still be heard, ringing from rocks and trees. Its direction is evident throughout listening range.
Tak, oblivious to the danger once posed to her, crawls out of her tree, downwards, and begins to cross the river. She is joined by the ones who were hunting her earlier, for they are mesmerized as well. Though her queen howls into her mind, she is heedless to all but the song of the strange one in front of her.
Sy'Aldreth is pleased with the results, even as the goblin next to him plants himself in the grass and stares, cross-legged. A good 4 of the 7 warriors remaining were clambering over stones in the river to get to him, and one of those was the last healer, leaving the wounded with no care. The only one who resist your siren call are the archer (annoyingly), the wounded human male, and one other person who hid behind a tree at your first volley, that you have not identified.
Calamvir finds a good steady limb, and crunches it's base underneath his claws. The spear is smashed, so the Orc demands one from another. Reluctantly, the Orcish woman hands her spear over, and he readies it in his grasp, snarling at the dragon higher than his reach.

After salvaging anything that looks light and useful, she shatters the remaining crossbow, and perks up at the sound of the unearthly song wafting throughout the trees. Wondering if more younglings were about, she travels that direction.

Sy'Aldreth sings until the googly-eyed masses form a small circle around him, entrnaced by his eldritch voice, he is quite please, and his tentacles twist eagerly about the ground besides Tak and the healer woman. If Tak had eyes, she would have blinked. If she had brows, they would have furrowed angrily. She did, however, have a mouth, and in that mouth were a rather impressive array of fangs. Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
With an internal smile, Aldreth kills the men. The insect thing jumps on one of the two women, killing her with nasty claws and a large tail. That would not do at all. The goblin protests both actions, yelling that they needed someone alive, and also angry at being enchanted. Everyone present, basically, is a little miffed.
Except of course for the woman who is slowly coming to as she realizes that the beautiful song has stopped playing. She remains there, though, in the hopes that it will return, only gradually starting to think about her situation. Her archer companion across the river, eyes wide, cries out quietly, "L-Laura?". The man, who is sitting leaning against a tree, calls out, "What's going on? What just happened?" You can see past the edge of the trunk that he is clutching an axe. The person who was behind the far tree takes off into the rainforest.
A bleeding pixie (not that anyone could see her) flits through the forest, trying to find the source of a reverberating song.
The Awakened baboon does as well, though not before hearing a string of curses burst out of the spikes behind him. The dwarf didn't anticipate the spell being used to affect the trees as well. And now he's slower than you until he he finds someone to bind his feet. And in the humid jungle, too, not known for its hospitability to open wounds... He might get an infection, however unlikely given his supernatural speed and endurance.
Calamvir, meanwhile, launches his magic at the Orc and forgets about it, flying upwards, throwing the last dried-up bits of goo off into the jungle. Though he hears shouts from the clearing below, he ignores them, moving off to try to find the source of the siren call. Almost immediately, he sees the subtle path in the canopy that the creek leaves. He flies off that way.

Aldreth's tentacles rise in between Tak and... Laura, yes, that is the name, it wouldn't do to let the xenomorph keep killing his prizes. Not at all.
His serpentine torso bends to lower him to face level with the woman, a second set of eyes focused on the other archer across the river.
"Now, now, husssh, there isss no need to be afraid. I do not wisssh to harm you, nor will I let this angry, angry girl hurt you either. It appearsss that you and your companionsss organized quite a few groupsss to hunt ssseveral poor folksss who were passssing. Could yo be asss tender asss to tell me why?"

Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Calamvir begins flapping his wings with greater fervor, the echo of the strange song alluring him as he moved as fast as he could over the creek, not really caring if anyone sees him.
-
Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Calamvir's massive wingbeats let him down and into the dusky light in the middle of the rainforest. By following the glint of the stream a very short distance, he comes to a strange scene, laid out before him. Dead bodies, a massive plant-insect, something else insectoid, a goblin (is it, blue?) and more of those repugnant mortals who dared attack him. Or at least, he thinks they're the same, since they have the same masks.
Gwylan finds the place, too. Only she is above the canopy, ducking down and suddenly viewing the scene below.
Tree-shaker moves more slowly than the others, perhaps only because he attempts secrecy, fearing more men with fists like lightning in the trees around him. He can tell he is close though, by the voices he hears through the ferns, and a strange scent in the air.
Aldreth is of course, the only one present who speaks. Shortly after his query of the girl, she stammers, "Well, sir. I'm glad you don't want to hurt us" Her face clouds over, as she thinks of the three comrades lying dead beside her, but she isn't quite perturbed enough to say anything about it. "It's the dragon", she says suddenly, in answer to the actual question, "there's a dragon that lives in these swamps, and we heard of her power and greed" The fragrance is having the intended effect, she is letting out more than her tongue realizes. Across the stream, the archer-girl kneels against the tree, mouth open in shock. The scent dulls her wits, too, and she stays silent when she really should be quieting her friend. The injured man, however, calls out: "Laura you don't tell that sonofabitch the date, you hear me? Laura!"
Both Laura and the man go dead-silent as a massive black dragon lands in the stream not too far away. Laura looks over in a haze, and she gives a shout and tries to get up and run. The man is spurred to get up and look around, despite his injury. As he does so, wincing and leaning into the spike through his stomach, you notice that he has kept on his mask, though most of the others discarded theirs. What importance this has, if any, you do not know. What you do know is that, leaning on a tree for support, he brandishes his axe Calamvir-ward, and starts to go pale. The archer stays where she is, nocking an arrow silently.

Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Tak drew back from the corpse, a sliver of flesh still hanging from her jaws. She hissed softly at the goblin, but heeded his words and didn't immediately charge the other female nearby. She psychically projected a sense of amusement when the singing creature said he wouldn't let her hurt the last female, the one called 'Laura'. If she wanted to kill the humanoid, it would die, and that was that. Knowing the two she was with would seek information first, she decided to finish off the man who was sitting against a tree. Just for her own amusement, she started flickering images to all present, of her ripping the man into pieces and eating them while he screamed. Then she showed a picture of her doing the same to the woman with a few words hanging above her head saying 'Talk or Else' in common.

Calamvir begins to strut forward, the unusual sight peaking his interest. He croons his head, sliding it left and right as he looks at the humans "Dragon? What Dragon? Raising an eyebrow he smirks "And what, pray tell, do you intend on doing with that tooth pick of yours?" he questions the human as he brandishes the axe.

Tak bristles, her own hate adding to her Queen's. She turns back towards Sy'Aldreth, but not letting the axe wielder completely out of her sight, and screeches at him, all but foaming at the mouth at the thought of the impudent creature trying to control her, to take her away from the Queen.
But a new feeling settled in her psyche. Her Queen had decided she was... interested in this dragon they spoke of, and was equally as interested in the new one that had appeared, and the plant creature as well. Perhaps these three could become hosts, Tak figured, and knew her Queen wouldn't quite tolerate her just murdering everyone before the Queen had decided. In that mind, she was being told to not kill the human male either, until he had either told them everything or he attacked her in turn.

Re: !Monsters and Mayhem in Laterr [3.5] IC
Laura takes off, heedless of Aldreth's words. She splashes off, into the stream, getting about a distance of 60 feet in the shallow water. The archer stands up, an arrow of sparkling energy twinkling in her bow pointed straight at Calamvir, when she is caught full in the chest by a blast of energy, seemingly out of nowhere at all. Her special arrow tumbles into the stream, it's twinkle guttering underneath the muddy water. The fragrant insect beckons to her, and at that, it is too much. She screams, and tugs three more arrows from their sheath. These arrows, though also enchanted, fly crooked as she aims at Aldreth through panicked eyes.

Attempting to flee, Aldreth could be heartbroken at that.

Laura is stopped immediately, by 6 arms gently barring her way with the less-than-lethal end of a mace. She keeps freaking out, but is told to calm down, calm down, by the one who holds her.
Meanwhile, the whole rest of the party takes off after the archer girl. The baboon calls lightning from the sky, that forks between trees to strike at the archer's feet, making her stumble. Gwylan zips forward and tries to hit her with an Eldritch Blast, but only barely hits her. At this final push though, she falls over. Eyes wide with fear, she scoots around to look at Tak, who lopes around her and hisses wildly. And then, with the clawing of earth and dirt, Calamvir rushes around a tree and comes full into view. Blue the goblin strides up afterward, reaching the edge of the little circle of trees they were in. His fingers crackled, a final threat to add onto the pile. The now-slightly-smoking girl, it would seem, is not going anywhere.
Meanwhile, Tree-shaker, who had not even looked back while firing his lightning bolt, points his finger at the man. A threat. The man just stammers "Look, we knew there was a dragon in here, but not two! And we certainly didn't know anything about a... a Druid such as yourself. We were on a dragon-hunt. That's what we do. Tak leaned in close to the fallen girl, and sniffed at her hair. She was sure the girl was inconsequential, so no one would mind her killing her, but maybe there was sport to be had of it. Yes, she could make the girl trust her and then kill her, more the fun of it. Maybe the girl could even be her way into some villages... The Hive always needed more soldiers, after all.
To facilitate some trust, Tak made a noise that was something of a mix of a hiss and a coo, and projected a sense of comfort and security to the girl, while simultaneously sending images of Tak protecting her from the nearby creatures to everyone. The message she was trying to send to the girl was that Tak would defend her from everyone, while she was fairly sure the others would recognize the stance more as a 'Mine' declaration.
