Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
The Touhou Project is a series of 2D vertically-scrolling danmaku shooting games made by Team Shanghai Alice, with three fighting game spinoffs co-produced with Tasogare Frontier.
For those who don't know what danmaku is, it's Japanese for "bullet curtain" or "curtain fire". Also known as Bullet Hell; here's a picture.
Don't let that scare you off though, the game is usually not that intense. The fighting games are great to play if bullet shooters aren't your thing.
There are currently 19 official games; 5 for an old system called PC-98, and 14 for Windows. The PC-98 have nearly no connection to the Windows games. You also don't need to play the games in any order to enjoy them; I would personally recommend starting with Imperishable Night or Perfect Cherry Blossom, games 8 and 7 respectively.

The fan base for Touhou is absolutely huge; basically everything that you can find besides the games is fan-made. The huge list of fanfiction, fan-games, music, images, etc.
Wikipedia
The Touhou Wiki, for your reading pleasure. Don't feel that it's necessary to read it; enjoy the Touhou series however you like. The front page of the wiki has links to the different game descriptions. There's also a page for fan-games located here.
Music
A Youtube playlist over 150 unplugged/classical based music and song remixes of the different tunes found in the Touhou games.
A Youtube playlist over 100 metal/rock based music and song remixes of the different tunes found in the Touhou games.
Bad Apple; probably the most famous touhou fan video, thanks to the Cirno News Network (CNN) sharing it on the air.
Images
Danbooru (NSFW) is great for finding images of Touhou characters, but I would recommend browsing with Firefox+Adblocker to remove some of the NSFW content.
Safebooru is the SFW version of Danbooru, but again, you may google it at you're own risk.
Google is fairly good, but the quantity can be a little limited.

Whoo, new thread! Posting for the sake of posterity, and a checkmark so I can find it later. :smalltongue:
Also, you forgot to mention the first game. Not quite a bullet shooter, more of an Arkanoid/Breakout sort of thing. Then again, no one really cares about the first 5.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Yay, new thread. I need to post more music in here :smalltongue:
Also marking the thread

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Onwards, to new-thread yayness~! Let us taunt those who play on easy modo and steal precious things!

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Yeah, it was the Curtainfires I was thinking about Mage. Just an amusing little bunch of NPCs, really.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
While Touhou references in WoW is awesome, that's not enough to make me wanna go back :D

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Who here plays Touhou Hack and Slash?
-
Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
I personally actually really liked the first one and put a decent amount of time into it, but that may have just been me. -.-

I have it, although it's gotten sort of boring doing single-player. Netplay on that, even locally with one of my friends who lives about 5 minutes away from me, seemed rather laggy.

Eh, didn't like the first game that much. Had no idea what I was doing, so that might have been why. The danmaku ones were okay too, but seeing as I was already spoiled with the newer games, they lost some of the appeal. I still 1CC'd Lotus Land Story on my first run of the game though, which I thought was hilarious.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Finally got the two songs I was missing for Sengoku Gensokyo: remixes of Maiden's Capriccio and Suwa Foughten Field.

I especially like the latter.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Touhou hack and slash looks like a fun, little diablo-like time waster, so I'd probably enjoy it. Anyone care to do a multiplayer game of it(probably during the summer, if schedules clash)?

And just a little myuusak of my own. Oh, and while I can remember; did anyone here ever save/find an alternate link to Taboovampire's horrible series on youtube? If you don't know what I'm talking about it's the last song in Koishi Hell.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
I want to ask something. What is Reimu's and Marisa's main theme song/leitmotif?
-
Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Speaking of Sengoku Gensokyo, could someone help me download it? I can't read Japanese, and Google Translate doesn't seem to work on the site, so I can't for the life of me find the download link.

I think generally people use Maiden's Capriccio - Dream Battle from Imperishable Night for Reimu, and Marisa has a bunch of different themes (I remember hearing somewhere that she has the most themes of any character).

Yeah I think most people just go with the IN themes for them, meaning "Maiden's Cappricio - Dream Battle" and "Love-colored Master Spark." Maybe it's because those are the only actual theme songs for them in the main shooter games.
Caution! Link spam imminent!
Of course, they have other ones too, but they're from the more gimmicky games. Reimu has both "Mystic Oriental Love Consultation" and "Dichromatic Butterfly" from the fighters, and "Colorful Path" from PoFV. And then there's Marisa, who has seven theme songs, two of which are "Love-colored X" and sound rather similar. "Vessel of Stars," an old song from the PC-98 games, became more popular once it was remixed in the fighters, but then most of her others are again from the "not main" danmaku games ("Dim. Dream" (PC-98), "The Witches' Ball" (not a Touhou original, but remixed into "Dance of Witches" for IaMP), "Oriental Dark Flight" (PoFV), and "Magus Night" (Fairy Wars)).
As you can tell, lots of songs for the main heroines. Also, for the most part, any songs remixed for the fighters came from either the PC-98 or Seihou games.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Also, this is technically not Reimu's theme, but often seen as one. And Marisa, while it's not in any game, also gets Magician's Melancholy as her theme.

Sounds like Touhou themes in G-major, it's a bit of a meme to make things sound very scary.

Yeah, but TabooVampire had their's a particular pitch/tone/whatnot, plus most of the other g-major mixes are just ear-shattering walls of noise; observe. Still, just searching there I've come across some good ones, the version of Koishi's being almost exactly the same as TabooVampire's. Now the only thing I'm missing is TabooVampire's deepmix of Marisa Stole The Precious Thing.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
On the subject of music (though hopefully not on the subject of things sounding horrifically scary), does anyone know good electronic resources for composing Touhou-style? I'm thinking I might do some Touhou remixes now that I have a decent-quality keyboard, but I don't know which tools are available, or are best for composing in WAV format. I've already worked out an A-capella arrangement of "History of the Moon" that should, at least in theory, be compatible with any Common Meter song.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Everyone has seen the Bad Apple Shadowgraph video.
A lot less have seen it on a laser scanner.
But no one, until today, has seen it in a Terminal window.
My friend Kuraitou has done just that.
Download. Run HALT.exe. SabiReference.exe is the same thing in his old system.
Forum thread for his HALT project.
By the way, you should include a link to the last thread in the OP memnarch.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
And thanks to one of your links, I now have a new screen saver.
-
Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
A lot of people probably haven't seen the one that "hurts your eyes and ears", either. Of course, I could be wrong. :smallwink: On that note, Russian Bad Apple is relatively awesome, too.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Everyone has seen the original Bad Apple. Maybe even the screensaver version, the scanner version, and other versions, but have they seen the English version?
Yes? Well crap. I wanted to feel like I was contributing. Still pretty good IMO.

Weeeeeeell, the original isn't quite like that.... There's a lot more shooting involved... :smalltongue:
Then download it; there's a link on the video.

I was kidding about it being the original, sorry.
And it's Elly's stage theme; you can hear it if you watch towards the end of the vid.
