Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
It might just be the lighting, or the reflection off the ULTRA-WHITE carpet, but your flesh tones look a little flat. GW's Ogryn Flesh is a good wash for flesh tones, and can bring some real depth to the color. Your other colors look pretty good, though.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Once I get around to finishing up and basing my first regiment of Napoleonics, expect a picture onslaught. I just explained how much stuff I intended to get done for games and her mind went all kafizzle (not helped by my previous projects being Space Marines, FoW Germans and Dystopian Wars and thus quite low in model count).

They are actually washed with Ogryn (well, everyone but Candy, who I'm actually going to Simple Green and completely paint from scratch tonight, I think, if I can get the final touches on the Convict Gunslinger). The lighting in the room is rubbish so I was taking this photo under a table lamp, which combined with the white towel (I paint at my computer desk, and I wouldn't forgive myself if I spilled paint on my rig) is probably what's causing them to look so flat.

Yeah, they're a hell of a solid band. I'm friends with a local band, Katabasis, that opened for them and Sybreed last week in Ourimbah on the Central Coast, NSW, Australia. Absolutely cut that I missed out on the gig. It was they day before pay day AND it was a Wednesday. Sometimes having a Mon-Fri job can be a bad thing.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
I have another question for you guys. IS the Army Painter colour primer actually primer? The guy at the store said it wasn't and that it's pretty much just paint, and he's usually pretty helpful. So is he right or wrong?

Unfortunately, he's right...
Fortunately, all primers are pretty much just spray paint. :smalltongue:
Personally, I use a Rustoleum brand Double Coat gray primer.
-
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Sooo...I can use it? Because that bleached bone color is looking pretty useful.
-
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
AFAIK, it's fine as a primer, just a little expensive for my tastes.
-
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
So does only the Double Coat type of Rustoleum work for plastic models, or can I use another of the primers? Because I don't recall seeing the double coat anywhere. All I can find is their normal automobile primers.
-
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Okay. I have my models, I have some primer (I got Krylon Indoor/outdoor....I've read that works okay, but tell me if i should not use it) and I picked up two pots of privateer press' paint. Now for my dumb question. Do I need to water this stuff down, or just use it straight?

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Jeeze. Was changing the names of the entire Citadel Colour range entirely necessary? I'm gonna feel lost next time I need to replace my paints.

Also, why did they have to make all the names stupid?

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Anyone have any reccomendations on what colors of paint I should buy for painting my space wolves?
What I know I need
-Something for their blue-grey armor
-A Red Color for the Grey Hunter's shoulder Pads
-Flesh Tone suitable for space vikings (Probably pale, considering there isn't much sun on Fenris)
-Hair colors like Greying-White, Bright Reddish Orange, and Blonde
What I have
-Badab Black Wash
-Asurmen Blue Wash
-Skull White
-Chaos Black
-Boltgun Metal
-Shining Gold
-Mithril Silver
-Dark Angels Green

Water it down. Definitely water it down. Your paints should be about the same consistency as milk. It takes a lot more coats, but they come out smoother.

On the other hand, if you thin it too much, you have to load your brush more carefully or the paint will go everywhere; I had to redo the highlights on half a set of Fenrisian Wolf teeth twice because I didn't. You want to let the brush soak a bit more than you would and then wipe off any paint that's "outside" the bristles, if you follow me.

Okay, water down my paint, got it. what about dry brushing? I know you wipe most of the paint off, but do you water that down too?
-
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
I thin my paints right in the pots, so by default, mine is thinned. You don't have to thin the paint you're going to use for drybrushing, though.

I wouldn't. You can risk working the paint up to a lather, and that's a bad thing.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Does anyone here who plays Space Marines have a recommendation on how to paint and assemble my drop pod? Should it be painted and assembled in stages?

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
So, question to anyone else who currently uses Games Workshop's old paint range: Given the fact that we're going to have to start using a new paint range anyway, is there anyone else who's giving serious thought to picking up the range of a different company, like Valejo, Reaper, or Privateer Press and giving them a try?
-
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
I'm currently using Valejo paints and I can say that they're pretty great. Having to mix them is annoying but the dripper bottles are incredibly handy. The only minus I have is that I have a yellow thing which is basically unuseable because the pigment is all caked up and no amount of mixing is helping. :smallsigh:
Overall, I've found that Vallejo, Army Painter and a lot of the other similar containers are near identical. (At least Vallejo white and Army painter white)

Not ever having tried Reaper, I only have second-hand reports, but I know for a fact that both Vallejo and P3 are better quality (and quantity) than GW/Citadel. Everyone I talk to says that Reaper is better then GW/Citadel as well. I'm slowly working my away from GW, even the washes. (I make my own washes now usually using Liquitex brand art acrylics, mixing medium and water.)

I painted all of mine while they were still on the sprue. Easier for spraying/undercoating. Of course, I learned my lesson with the first one. :smallwink:

Going to agree with this point: you just can't get to certain nooks and crannies when it's assembled.

Well this is of course going to be out of date now, as GW has changed their paint line completely (and a new manufacturer, which is why they changed all the names) so to compare the quality of the new stuff versus the old stuff and other companies will take some time.
They now have... 4(?) different lines of paint, the base, layer, drybrush, and technical (I think) as well as the washes. I can't remember off-hand what the technical is, but I think its mixed with a glaze or some other sort of medium as well as a few base additives.
The base I tried last night have incredibly good coverage, but the color was an olive drab sort of green/tan color which tend to have good coverage anyway. The real test there will be whites, reds, and yellows. I'm also not sure how well they would work for drybrushing, or layering, as they might not work quite the same way if they do have a very high pigment count. The drybrush paints are really think, almost like a paste, and the little bit I used of it worked well. I didn't use anything else so far, so I can't comment on them.
I hadn't actually planned on painting anything and wasn't testing them specifically but someone had came into the shop while I was there and was working on a plague look for some skaven so I picked a couple colors and did a quick trial run for him.
I've used some Vallejo and a decent amount of P3 paints, and while I had mostly switched over to P3 I didn't really find anything that made any one line really stand out. I've had more issue with poor quality, but I suspect that was probably mostly due to picking less used colors from an online store that might have had it sitting around a long time.

The only thing that really stands out for me are the Vallejo Air Metallics. The metallic particles are so small (to fit though an airbrush) that the quality of the paintjob you get from these things is amazing.

I've actually been unimpressed with the Model Air metallics; the pigment is just too weak, at least for the red. I've had far better results with grey metallics painted over with inks.

I haven't tried any of the color metallics (I just wouldn't use them enough to justify buying them), just the basic steel/silver/gold/bronze/brass types.
