Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Some things I've been working on the past while:
Some images of a regiment of Tomb King Skeletons:
Some side by side comparisons of wash techniques:
Working on a test subject for my Necrons themed as "Tomb Kings in Spaaaaaace." Next step for that is to find red rods to place in the gun:

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
The basic idea for the model and the execution is indeed very cool, but I think I just dislike the skeletons you used for it... they seem blocky and low-detail to me.

I totally went ouch, until I figured you were talking about the piece Hootman did.

Oh, they are. And about 50% taller than the average GW model, which I did NOT know when I purchased them. However, I got 400 of them for about $30, and I'm FINALLY getting around to doing something with them, so I don't mind that they're a little screwy.
Perhaps someday, I will buy real Tomb Kings and ALSO hack them together into freakish combination models.
Speaking of which, could anyone please tell me the dimensions of a Casket of Souls? I would like to build myself one of those, but I don't know how big to make the base (because GW doesn't list a base, and I'm pretty sure they are like vehicles and don't have one normally). Also, if that person wouldn't mind posting a picture of the thing from above, I'd appreciate it.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
So, working on the crypteks. A question has come up, though. The two left crypteks don't actually have their arms glued on. My question is, should they? Or, to be clearer, should I wait until they are painted to glue the arms on?
As far as paint schemes go, I want to give each of the 5 crypteks (The fifth cryptek's arms unassembled bits are all you can see here) a different scheme, based on each of the 5 disciplines.
So, potential paint schemes
Harbinger of Despair: Ceramic Black carapace with a dark, glowing red eye.
Harbinger of Destruction: Mix of Black and blood red carapace
Harbinger of Eternity: Decripit metalic carapace suggests the Harbinger of Eternity has spent a fair bit of time in fast time.
Harbinger of the Storm: Bright Blue and Yellow carapace and cloak
Harbinger of Transmogrification: Torn between Earthy tones or some sort of Eye-Offending mix of bright colors.
Does anyone have any tips for getting the ceramic look on armor, or the aged look on the Harbinger of Eternity? Recommendations on what the Harbinger of Transmogrification should go with, color scheme-wise?

Ceramic:Go with a satin finish varnish on just the carapace? Or perhaps weather it with white chips in the finish?
Aged: Try some rusting techniques, or weathering powders. I recommend Doc O'Brien's powders.

Too thick, I'm afraid.
I've heard that, if you look around the internet, you can find some sort of plastic cylinder that's the right size.
Where, I don't know.

Go to a supermarket or Bottle Shop (a place that sells alcohol), and get thin straws. A friend of mine uses hard swizzle sticks. They're apparently a pain in the bum to cut, but they're hard, right diameter and a good colour.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
So, I have been a fan of minis for a long time, but for a variety of reasons never got around to actually painting them (cost, time, availability, whatever). Regardless, I was out and about last fall hitting the rummage sales and came across a bin of miniatures. I *think* they are GW...but not sure. Had some orcs, skeletons, ratmen??, and some elemental looking thing. Anyway, a few weeks back I took the plunge and ordered some vallejo paints (I heard they were good).
This is my first time painting these things, so be kind ;) I know the pics are not the best, but I am interested if you have any feedback. I have been scouring the net for articles, videos, and guides on painting. But yeah, here ya go:
Wish the pictures were better, but I used my phone cause my camera died. They are a little grainy.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Well, I can honestly say I've seen worse "first minis." A LOT worse. Those are actually quite good for someone who's never painted minis before.
To get rid of seams on resin or plastic, you can use Citadel's "Plastic Glue." (Personally, I never touch the stuff.) To get rid of seams on any mini, you can use modelling putty or Greenstuff. Modelling putty is cheaper, but requires more patience and effort.
Decent job on the rust, I never could get the hang of actually painting rust. I use weathering powders, and either wet them or just leave them dry, depending on the effect I'm looking for. Again, these require patience and practice.
On the photos, try bending (not folding) a piece of plain, white (or black) printer paper behind and under the minis. Also, try placing two spot lamps or desk lamps forming a "V" with the light beams with the mini at the vertex. Then, skip the flash. Your photos will look 100% better.
Hope that helps.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
DSmiles: your 2 latest miniatures are looking really good. The highlights aren't eye-jarring in their contrast- they work very well. I'm guessing you're using a lot more Payne's Grey? It seems to be working for you. Good TT stuff.
-
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Thanks! (Payne's Grey is AMAZING. A. MAZ. ING.)
EDIT: Also, has anyone ever made slushy snow? I need to figure it out for my Pyre Troll.
Should I use Water Effects and Snow Flock, or is there a better combination?
EDIT: Speaking of Trolls in snow...

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Slushy snow: water + PVA glue + bicarb (baking soda)
Play around with the ratios until you get something you like. Be sure to sprinkle some bicarb over the slush mix after you put it on the base to give it a little more definition and reinforce the idea that it is melting snow.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Alright, I need an opinion. I'm just getting started, and my first boxes for my 1000 point beginner army should be showing up this week. Anyway, Most of my core is going to be Vampire Counts ghouls.
I'm going for a frozen, wintry look (or at least trying) and decided I wanted to do albino ghouls. One of the guys at my local store had the perfect color on the belly of his....Manticore I think. Unfortunately, his method involves about 12 steps. There is no way I want to do that for hordes, so the guy said that I might be able to just base them white, and then do a wash of Ogryn Flesh.
Any opinions on that?

Well, I've done albino alligators. Bleached Bone or Menoth White Base, white drybrush, Gryphonne Sepia wash. I'm working on an albino Trollkin, now. Frostbite or Space Wolf Grey, white drybrush, Payne's Grey wash.
Alternatively, instead of Bleached Bone/Menoth White Base, you could use Rotting Flesh, with a heavy drybrush of BB/MWB, and a light drybrush of white, followed by a wash. That will give you a little more depth than just two colors, but blending from Rotting Flesh through Bleached Bone up to white (with the wash at the end) will give you a more even skin tone.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Do have pictures of your alligators and the in progress trollkin? Just so I can see what it looks like.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
I'm working on my first Valkyrie kit, and I'm wondering. Is it normal for the door gunners' arms to not fit into the slots for them on the heavy bolters they're supposed to man? I had to salvage arms from heavy weapon teams to get parts that fit properly. And since that's basically the first step in the kit, I might as well ask if there are any other pitfalls I should know about, since it's an exceedingly complex (and expensive) model that I've never done before.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
I haven't actually considered starting playing/collecting Warhammer stuff (primarily for economic reasons) but I have looked at it considerably. I was wondering if anyone knows a good way to paint Blood Angels without making them look like they came in a Happy Meal. I've started looking at their fluff and playstyle and like them, but can't get over how garish their Citadel-standard paintscheme looks.
-
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
You could try a really dark red. The way I paint my khorne models is:
Mechrite red drybrush.
Devlan Mud.
Gold+metals+other such things.
Devlan Mud.
Highlights.
I like the way it looks at least. It all hinges on the highlights though.

Certainly old boy I don't like them bright either. How I paint mine came out a pretty nice, dark, red. I've not got any photos because my phone camera is rubbish, but this works ok.
- Basecoat Mechrite red
- Thin layer of Blood red.
- Blazing Orange Drybrush when basecoat is dry
- Baal Red wash up to you how heavy you make it.
I also use a spot of Badab Black wash on bits like the armour joints which gives it a touch of shadow.

@dsmiles
Thanks! I'm probably gonna steal Monsieur Barnabas' paint scheme.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Well, my Imperial Fist Sicarius is coming along very nicely. Unfortunately, camera is dead is power cable is absolutely nowhere to be found. A bit of a shame really. Now I have to get a new camera, so soon after I got the old one working.
...Although, I can now see that I can a camera like, 8x better than my old one for 2/3 the cost.
Still haven't found better than
White => Sunburst Yel. => Gryph. Sepia (line, not wash) => Highlight White.

What's that you say, Cheesegear? You want MOAR TROLLZ????
You got it.

I forgot to add the snow. Oops.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Does anyone know any good alternative minis for the Necron Overlord? I've seen a lot of complaints about the finecast Overlord being awful so I'm hesitant about getting one.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
I noticed some people posting Malifaux in here. I've recently gotten really into Malifaux with a friend of mine and some of the folks at the local gaming store. I've mostly focused on Neverborn, but I finally branched out this afternoon and ordered in Rasputina and a few minis that work well with her crew (Silent Ones, December Acolytes, Essence of Power). Anyways, the only crew I've successfully completed painting has been Pandora's and for the most part they turned out better than I expected, seeing as the only thing I painted before them were Necrons, which are essentially varying shades of metallic grey colours. Going from that to flesh was jarring, and you can tell by the first mini I painted, Candy. She looks terrible :/
Anyways, the pic is below. Apologies for the quality, I don't have a decent camera so I had to use my phone, and the lighting the room's pretty bad so it's hard to see the highlighting.
If anyone has any comments or criticisms I wouldn't mind hearing them. As someone who hasn't really painted varied miniatures before, I need any and all help I can get.
I'm currently working on a Convict Gunslinger while waiting for the drill bits I need for my dremel to show up. Once they arrive, it's Nephilim time (soooo much pinning. SOOOOOOOooooo much pinning!), and that'll be the true test of whether I can do this painting thing all the kids are into these days.
