Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
So I'm quitting my job, and the security guard at work said he wanted to give me a box of old orks he had sitting around before I left.
I was excited, but expecting like one or two boys and a trukk.
This guy came in and handed me a whole, primed, unpainted old Ork speedfreak army with carrying case.
Wow. O.O
I need colorscheme ideas. My Speedfreaks are already the standard Red/Green/Checkerboard black&white that the books suggest and I've started to be a bit disappointed in my lack of creativity with them.
This gift is special, I want to paint it special.
Suggestions?
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Orks who paint themselves red in an attempt to go faster? Purple and Orange highlights for stealth?
My advice would be to look up the Ork color scheme meanings and pick what (besides red) makes the most sense for Speedfreaks
Let's see...
REd is speed
Purple/Orange is stealth (Have you ever see a Purple and Orange Ork? I didn't think so)
Blue is lucky
Yellow is flashiness (bling) and Dakka
Black is Toughness
Green is the "Orkiest"
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Give all the Speedfreak vehicles appropriately Orky sponsors and racing stripes, because they be proppa fast wunz?

Big numbers and spoilers. NASCAR-style.

Green is also best.
Which makes one wonder why they don't just pain everything green.

Okay, that's probably true for natural metallics. I just hate the fact that Vallejo Model Air are the only color metallics out there that aren't Testor's and they're garbage.

Because how would you know if they painted themselves?

You wouldn't. 'Cause it's Orky camouflage!

I found some acryllic metallic color paints. Folk Art makes some, but I haven't had the occasion to use any of them yet, so I can't vouch for they're quality. But they're fairly cheap, and generally available at craft stores(AC Moore, Michaels)
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
For colored metallics all you really need to do is take a normal metallic and add ink. The inks will color it without loosing some of the sparkle like you get if you mix normal colored paints with metallics. Inks are something you should have anyway. The copper/brass/gold colors seem to work best for mixing to green or red but the silvers work well for most other things.

I use metallics as an undercoat and ink over them. The effect is good, but I wish there was a simpler option.
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Just wanted to say, I am a noob at painting miniatures and the Necron Compound, that just came out, is a godsend for the dry brushing impaired. My orkz are coming along nicely now.
My local store was having a sale on the old citadel paints, but they were out of bolt metal(think that was what it was called).
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
So, Citadel Paint fanatics, Liquid Greenstuff...how the F do I use it?
How does it go on, with my modelling knife?
How do I clean it up?
I have a mini that needs a lot of little gaps filled, and Liquid Greenstuff seems like the way to go. But this will be my first time working with it, I normally use modelling putty.
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Nevermind. I figured it out.

New question! I'm looking for a wash for white. I know there is is the good old Devlan Mud/agrax earthshade stuff, but I don't want my white to look, well, muddy. Any ideas?
And on another note, about 4 thick coats of seraphim sepia will make Evil suns scarlet a pretty decent gore color. It's a little brown, but not bad.

Well, I guess you could use Payne's Grey, but I don't normally wash anything I want to be white.
I usually just build it up from another color. Gray for a "clean" white, and brown for a "dirty" white.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Could someone explain NMM to me like I was five years old. I tried and just can't do it to save my life. I ended up covering up the detail on the blades of my warmongers trying it. I think I'll just do chainmail washed with a watered down dark red.
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
First of all, it only looks good from one specific angle. Second, you have to be VERY good at blending. Unless you're painting it as a display piece, it's probably not worth it.

Yeah, I tried it on Candy & Cola (see ^), and it came out pretty clunky. But then again, I've never seen anyone's first attempt at NMMs come out beautiful.
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Because apparently I'm a glutton for punishment, here are some of my in progress mans! I noticed as I was taking the pictures that: a. I need better lighting. and b. apparently I missed a couple spots :(
Dire Wolf
Doom Wolf (Need to fix his back paw when I finish the other guys. Sigh.)
Black Knight Musician (You can't see inside his barding from a normal angle, hence the horribleness that you see here.)
Black Knight Champion (Random Touch ups needed, apparently. )
*edit forgot the important one, the reason I'm very glad there are only going to be about 3 models in my army with faces.

Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Query for those who've ordered from Forge World: Is it common to get stuff you didn't order when they send your models?
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
I only ordered from them once, but I DID get a free catalog. :smallconfused:

Yeah, well I got a free squad of Space Marines in Mk IV power armor. The group that went in on the order is presently arguing over who gets it; as the organizer I think I'm just going to put it up for a closed bidding auction for my trouble... unless there's some form of mistake and they're going to want it back or want to charge me or something.
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Was it a large order? I've seen some companies drop in freebies from time to time with large orders. As a matter of fact, Reaper does this occasionally with their paints.
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Roughly £540, in fact. So that's probably it. And speaking of Forge World, those darn Space Marines are stealing my bit! :smallfurious:

And since that's basically the first step in the kit, I might as well ask if there are any other pitfalls I should know about, since it's an exceedingly complex (and expensive) model that I've never done before.
I guess no one knows, then?
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
I once ordered two Cadian resperator upgrade kits and a set of bolters, and also got sent two Ork Battlewagons. Yeah.
Re: The Warhammer Models Thread III: A Brush With Death
Re free stuff: you likely got a sweet mis-pick from the warehouse. Even with the literal thousands of dollars I've spent there I've never gotten anything for free ever, or heard of it.
There's probably someone somewhere really annoyed that they didn't get their marines...

So does anybody here know how the Dark elf Sorceress on cold one attaches to the mount, and how the finecast mounted vampire lord attaches? I kinda want to use the sorceress as my mounted BSB for my Vampire Counts army, since I'm already using the normal sorceress as my Necromancer.
