Re: Silent Tide [Kong Pathfinder]
The chains are just a tad too tough on that first attempt, but you still feel like you might be able to pull it off.
Yargos looks to Amdal "Oh you've been sent by the Society? Yes, of course you have! Thank the gods for the Pathfinders! Thank the gods for you! Those brutes are members of some lowly local gang that operates out of this area of town...Warhounders or some such nonsense they call themselves. I've never really paid much mind to those tattoos myself, I assume they're just some sort of decoration..."
As Amdal gestures to the other old men, asking who they are they introduce themselves.
"The name's Tashen, sir. I work down at the pub we came from, washin' the plates and mugs n' such." says a rather poor looking gentleman, his eyes and hair the same shade of dark brown.
"Samchar, retired watchman. I'd offer to help, but I don't feel I'd be any use, at this age." replies the largest of the men, his face and arms scarred from years of service. He seems as though he may have been a competent warrior in his day.
"I-Ilmn, sir." a quiet and shaky voice from the back of the group says. The smallest and most frail looking of the men. "I'm j-just a s-s-soap maker sir, I would like to go back home."

"Amdal!" barks Dastria, joining the party nearer the edge of the cliff. "How can you expect them to speak if they are on the brink of death? For Desna's sake...remember your compassion!"
After shooting a less than pleasant look at the halfling, Dastria begins singing her healing incantation, targeting all four of the prisoners, her palms outstretched to them, her eyes wide open.

Re: Silent Tide [Kong Pathfinder]
The chain between Tashen and Ilmn breaks with ease, the length binding Ilmn and Sanchar does not give so easily, however. It bends but does not break.
The men thank Theodric as he bends and breaks the chains that bind them together.
Torrim's bolt flies true and strikes the fleeing thug in the back, dropping him to the ground instantly.
"No, I don't think he does." says Sanchar with a small chuckle.
Yargos, very nervous and clearly agitated begins to explain his situation to Amdal. "So, you were sent by the Society you say? It's good to know that they had received word of the book, but those thugs were sent by their leader Nessian. They've got the book and it's not long before that fool uses it to wreak havoc on all of Absolom!"
"Oh, this is all my fault. I never should have tried mimicking those signals." the old man speaks as a wave of grief washes over his face. "You see, I am a historian, particularly I have an interest in military history and the Silent Tide was such an interesting attempt to take the city I had thought. I was so delighted to have in my possession an authentic piece of that operation! How was I to know the vows those saboteurs took would carry beyond the veil? Oh, and that bastard Nessian has it and I know this cannot end well if we do not retrieve that book soon. If we can get the book back I can use the master abort code -- a series of bright flares -- to end this whole thing before it gets much worse. As for finding Nessian, the only person I'd know to ask is..." he leans in closer to Amdal, seemingly ashamed of what he is about to say."Grandmaster Torch."

While breaking the chains, Theodric tried to listen to Yargos' explanation of the book's whereabouts. However, being as single-minded as he is, his train of thought got lost fairly early on. In an attempt to get back on track, Theodric asks: "So Mister, the book we have to find is in the hands of the leader of the guys we just killed? And to find the guy, we have to ask that Greatmaster or some such where he is?"
-
Re: Silent Tide [Kong Pathfinder]
"Er...yes, there might be more than what I've said friend," the old man says nervously "but in all this confusion some of the details may have slipped my mind. As I said the Silent Tide was a Taldan operation to weaken the city and then attack it with a hidden fleet. The saboteurs were discovered however and the fleet destroyed in a counter attack. I accidentally summoned these undead by testing some of the signals in the book I had figured there was no risk, considering the operation is some eight hundred years old."
Looking to Theodric he explains "Yes, their leader Nessian intervened when I went to throw the book into the sea and now that he has it I fear that he might use it to blackmail the city into submission. It is absolutely imperative that we retrieve it before he does any such thing."
He looks to the other old men "I am deeply sorry friends, I did not mean to put you in harm's way like that. Go back to your homes, this is my fault and I alone take responsibility." After a short period of saying their goodbyes the three other men take their leave and Yargos seems a tad more at ease.
"Yes, I suggest we seek an audience with Grandmaster Torch. He's an information broker and very connected in the city's criminal side. He's a tough man, but if anyone knows where Nessian might be it is him." he says occasionally looking over his shoulder.

Kong's a flash game site Sam, no real ties to this other than most of the folks being members. I originally set this up to run it for a friend from Kong and the rest also seemed interested. I would still suggest joining it just because it''s a nifty place and the built-in chat has given me some pretty good friends recently. Good folks in BC, that is.
Also, that knowledge local check is high enough, you're vaguely aware of the workings of Absolom's criminal side and know that what Yargos says is true about Torch.

"Oh, give me that!" Dastria spits, snatching the rope out of Theodric's hands, slashing off around three feet of rope with her starknife, and throwing the rest back to Theodric.
"I'll deal with our sleeping friend then, if no-one else will do it."

Torrim shook off the fear and turned back to the old man.
-
Re: Silent Tide [Kong Pathfinder]
"It's not the book so much as what it contains. Rather the dedication of those Taldan naval officers, I suppose." replies the old man. "The book contains only the signals and codes used by the fleet for that operation."
The bound thug looks at Theodric with utter contempt. "Heh, like I'd believe that. It won't matter if'n you tell 'im or not, he'll find out if I squealed and that's not going to happen. Go ahead, turn me in. See 'ow long that lasts."
