City of Spires - Game Over
City of Spires
Start of Play June 27...
...End of Play July 14
Co-narrators: Firemeier, BobTheFerret, Internet Flea
Each of the five spires towered a thousand feet above the City (solid pieces of an orange brown rock). They were built long ago by techniques lost to its current dwellers. Each spire expanded in a disk shape near its pinnacle and was equipped with observation decks and telescopes. It was here that the nobles gazed down upon the people of their realm and, perhaps more often, at each other. The noble families were an intricate mess even within each tower, but the claim to Lord Ruler of the Spires was the most hotly contested claim any of the nobles aspired to...
Rules:Spoiler
Show
There are three noble houses feuding in the City of Spires (each noble lives in one of the five spires). This creates three factions (one for each noble) and two empty spires.
The Nobles:
Spoiler
Show
The nobles begin play with their role and faction exposed to all players. It takes a 50% vote to lynch a noble. Every player is informed who the nobles are at the beginning of the game.
A noble wins if he is the only noble left alive and there are no ninja.
Roles of a Noble's Loyal Followers:
Spoiler
Show
Assassin: Each night, the assassin may attempt to assassinate one player.
Bodyguard: A bodyguard's noble cannot be assassinated as long as his bodyguard lives (the noble can still be lynched).
Spy: Each night, the spy may determine the loyalty (but not the role) of one player. The Loyal Followers of a noble read as Loyal Followers of that noble. Townsfolk read as Townsfolk. Ninja read as Ninja. The Master Ninja reads as Townsfolk.
We are
not using Helgraf's Interference rule.
But we are using the Evidence Doesn't Vanish Cause You're Dead rule.
Evidence Doesn't Vanish Cause You're Dead:
Spoiler
Show
Spies can spy targets post-mortem to determine the faction they had in life.
Roles of the Townsfolk:
Spoiler
Show
Healer: Each night, the healer may attempt to protect one player (but not himself) from assassination.
Villager: A townsperson without a special role.
Roles of the Ninja:
Spoiler
Show
The Ninja Clan: When a Noble dies, his surviving Loyal Followers do not! They retain their roles, but also become ninja seeking revenge! The ninja win if there are no nobles left. Each night, the ninja clan meets to decide who they will attempt to assassinate that night.
Master Ninja: The Master Ninja cannot be assassinated. He may disguise himself to appear to read as any loyalty (Loyal Follower of a living Noble, Townsfolk, or Ninja). He wins if there are no nobles left. The Master Ninja's vote is a tie breaker in ninja clan assassination votes.
Declaring Loyalty:
Spoiler
Show
Any player may publicly declare loyalty to no more than one of the living nobles during the day by writing the noble's name in blue. This does not make the player a Loyal Follow of that noble because he may change his loyalty during the day by striking through his declaration of loyalty.
Players who forget to strike-through their previous declaration of loyalty will be considered as not having declared loyalty.
Townsfolk win when the noble that they have declared loyalty to wins. Loyal Followers and Ninja cannot win this way, but they may still make public declarations of loyalty.
Lynching:
Spoiler
Show
Lynch votes are declared in red and you must strike through to void a vote. It takes a 25% vote to lynch any player except a noble. It takes a 50% vote to lynch a noble. The role and faction of a lynched player are revealed. Days are 48 hrs, nights are 24 hrs.
Players will be autolynched after three consecutive game days of non-voting. Their position will be open for substitution by another player for one game day.
Players who multi-vote (forget to strike-through their previous vote) will not have any of their multi-votes counted.
Multi-voters and those in danger of autolynch will be listed after each end of day narration.
Once any player attains a victory condition, the game is over.
It will take a minimum of 12 players to run this game without the ninja and a minimum of 15 players to run this game with the ninja.

06-24-11 Situations where players multi-vote or forget to vote are covered in the rules under Declaring Loyalty and Lynching.
06-27-11 Narrations reveal some information about the attackers (see Questions and Answers 4 and 5). Information about lynched players is revealed (see Lynching).
06-28-11 We are not using Helgraf's Interference. However, Evidence Doesn't Vanish Cause You're Dead (see the role of the Spy under Roles of a Noble's Loyal Followers).

Re: City of Spires - Recruiting
Questions and Answers:
1. Why use the plural "ninja" and not the plural "ninjas"?
Spoiler
Show
The ninja attacked!
How many ninja?
It doesn't matter, because no matter how many attack, you only ever see one...
Thanks to Ramsus
post 4, I have edited my posts.
2. If a noble dies in game do his followers become ninja?
Spoiler
Show
If we have enough players at the start of the game to play with ninja, then yes, his followers become ninja.
If we don't have enough players at the start of the game to play with ninja, then a noble's followers just disband and are eliminated with the noble they follow.
3. What does a Ninja Bodyguard do?
Spoiler
Show
A Ninja Bodyguard participates in nightly ninja clan decisions (influencing who the ninja clan will target for a night kill). He cannot use his Bodyguard ability anymore because the noble he protected is dead!
What? A bodyguard who failed to protect his master? Live with the shame or die.
Note: expect high attrition due to lack of baners.
4. What faction does a Healer appear to have when spied on?
Spoiler
Show
The Healer appears to be a Townsfolk.
5. Are role and faction revealed on death?
Spoiler
Show
If the deceased was assassinated, his role and faction are not revealed in the narration except nobles (whose role and faction are obvious).
If the deceased was lynched, his role and faction are revealed in the narration.
Furthermore, the narrations may reveal the faction (but not the identity) of the attacker.
e.g.
So-and-so was killed by an assassin loyal to Rules Lawyer #1.
So-and-so was killed by the ninja.
So-and-so was lynched. He was a spy for Rules Lawyer #1.
Additionally, players are informed privately when an assassination attempt against them has failed and ninja learn the role and faction of their target if the kill is successful.
6. What constitutes a 25% vote?
Spoiler
Show
It means 25% of the players able to cast a vote must vote for the same player.
For example, if there are 19 players, then it will take 5 votes for the same player to lynch him.
If more than one player garners 25% of the vote, the player with the highest number of votes will be lynched.
If there is a tie between two players with 25% or more of the vote. The player who reached the tying number of votes first will be lynched.

Re: City of Spires - Seeking Co-narrators
I'm in.
I have a few questions. 1) Why oh why are you using the horrible pluralization of ninja? 2) If a noble dies in game do his followers become ninja? 3) What does a Ninja Bodyguard do? Nothing?

Re: City of Spires - Assigning Roles
The Game Begins
Welcome to the City of Spires!
Rules Lawyer #1 didn't know how the Lord Ruler of the Spires had been killed this time, but the Lord Ruler was gone - vanished now some 18 days ago without a trace. Rumors ran through the City saying the ninja had taken him out. If this was true, then no one in the City of Spires was safe. The ninja could be anywhere and no one could take the Lord Ruler's place until the ninja were found and eliminated.
Rules Lawyer #1 put the finishing touches on the three envelopes before him. Messengers would take them out to the three nobles with valid claims to the title of Lord Ruler. Those nobles were TigerFang, Tilt, and Low-Key. His work here done, Rules Lawyer #1 started packing. It was time to get out of the City of Spires before those messengers reached their destinations and chaos erupted in the City…
Summary: Spoiler
Show
The three nobles are Tigerfang, Tilt, and Low-Key.
Rules Lawyer #1 left the City of Spires before the ninja could get him. He is the narrator.
Day 1 Begins Now and Ends in About 48 Hours.

Re: City of Spires - Day 1 Game On!
Lord Tiger of house Fang gazed at the great city from the top of his marvelous tower. He had heard from reliable sources that the Lord Ruler of the Spires had been assassinated yet he did not want to believe those rumors without confirmation. 10 years as the head of the prestigious house had taught the young lord that one should never trust what he heard without some form of solid proof.
Suddenly a servant approached lord Tiger, bowing his head he handed him an envelope sealed in wax bearing the crest of Rules Lawyer. He took the envelope and opened it hastily reading the letter inside... then he read it again to make sure he understood the full meaning of the letter. The Lord Ruler really was dead... and it was believed the ninja did it. This was dire news... chaos will soon engulf the city if proper measures where not taken.
Once finished with the letter the lord threw it aside and called for his servants giving them orders to make preparations. He was going to speak to the people of the town today. The city needed stability and for that it needed a Lord Ruler and lord Tiger knew well that he could not become the Lord Ruler without the support of the people.
"Dear citizens of the City of Spires. I lord Tiger of house Fang promise you that the wicked ninja will not go unpunished for their crimes. If you support me on my way to become the Lord Ruler I will guarantee your safety and we will bring peace and prosperity to this city!" (and free cookies all around)

Miya sama, miya sama

Lord Chiruto had arranged to be awoken every morning in an elaborate ritual involving a chorus of four servants and a gong. In this, as in other things, his style was flashy, it was inordinately expensive, it was perhaps in somewhat poor taste, but it commanded a certain amount of respect and it kept a good amount of commoners comfortably and harmlessly employed. And among the nobility of the City of Spires, bread and circus was what kept you alive. It was Chiruto's policy to provide both as generously as he could afford. He rose wordlessly to a sitting position and retrieved a small bell from the nightstand. Ringing it, he motioned for the servants to begin presenting the affairs of the day.
A servant carrying an ornately decorated box stepped forward, opening it. "My lord, fine foreign wine, a gift from merchants seeking to trade under your protection." A bottle was uncorked. Wine was poured into a small drinking bowl on the nightstand. Chiruto lifted it daintily and put it down into a small mouse cage standing beside it. He then rang the bell a second time.
A second servant, carrying a scroll, stepped forward, unfurled it, and began to read. "My lord, the First Lawyer of the City of Spires, honoured servant of the throne, sends you greetings. The Lord Ruler is dead, and the struggle for succession has begun. Your house is one of three to have a legitimate claim on the throne."
Lord Chiruto felt his heart racing in excitement and suppressed a smile. He put down the bell, rose fully, and spoke. "Very well. Make it known through the proper channels that we will be seeking to claim the throne. Spread word among the commoners that anyone who approaches our House for protection in these troubled times will be granted shelter and guarded to the best of our ability, and that anyone who can provide assistance in the struggle will be richly rewarded. Send for my three most faithful retainers. I shall need their services, and their counsel." He glanced glumly down at his nightstand. "Have the merchants exiled and find out who brought this wine. And have this mouse buried with full honours."
(OOC: Please do PM me if you want to get a head start on building a relationship with a noble house. We'll have fun, we'll have tactics, we'll have Mikado references. RPers and non-RPers welcome. Any level of commitment welcome, no need to claim allegiance openly initially if you feel paranoid.)

Re: City of Spires - Day 1 Game On!
The venerable Lord Low-Key walked out onto the balcony with the help of his favorite cane.
"Honored peoples of our most glorious City of Spires. I speak to you this day of a heavy burden on my heart. I am an old man, only wanting to retire peacefully, but the troubles of current events have forced me into action.
I come to to beg your support in my ascension to Lord Ruler. I do not make this desicion lightly and were it only about me would decline the position if possible. However, the quality of the next most likely choices is too suspect for me to stand aside. Young ambitions of the young lords Ti-ger and Ti-lt know no bounds, and this ti-dy rise of ninja can be no coincidence!" He raises thrusts his cane into the air to emphasis each of his sentences. And when done slowly makes his way back inside.
