Too bad they didn't bring in Young and Beautiful as the Trash Heap. :smalltongue:
Jim Henson! You mean, the one who made muppets!
I love goblins comic but there is one thing I don't like. Thunt opened up too many frontlines of the player characters (Goblin Adventure Party and Kore, Min Mix and his company, and current Dies party. It is not bad but it hinders the story progress.

I'm pretty sure we're not going to see the GAP again until after the Maze of Many storyline wraps up. But I would count Saves vs. Duv as its own nascent scene, so there's that, plus Biscuit and Dies, plus Grem, plus Fogath/Minmax/Kin, and technically Tempts Fate. And that's assuming he doesn't randomly decide to start a new arc for the purple hobgoblin or something. So you're right that there are a lot of different cliffs for us to hang from.

Forgath, Minmax, and the ex-drow are technechly the only ones with players, but yeah i get what you mean.

The moster party is supposed to be an important part of the story i beleive, but from what i'm aware thunt doesnt want the extra workload. I beleive it's been mentioned that they're hoping to hire annother artist to draw that story to take over one of the two update days, but i could be wrong, so take this with a grain of salt.

The only ones known to have players. Fogath didn't seem to know he was played by a girl until Minmax pointed it out, so it's possible that the goblins have players but don't know this. Then again you may be completely right; technically I don't think it's even entirely established that Minmax has a player.
Oh, and am I the only one who wants the ex-drow group to show up again? It seems as though Thunt just kinda abandoned them, but it's possible that they'll pop up again in some surprising way.

Well I love Thunt's style but I can't blame him a bit if he needs to roll back on the investment.

I beleive Thunt said out of comic somewhere that the goblins are player characters, but dont actually have players. Baisically they get the benifits without any limits or bonuses players give them.

Wha? I really didn't get "Holy crap I didn't know that" from that face. He just seems annoyed at Minmax for his inane logic.

Eh. That's what Thunt called it in his Twitter feed when it first appeared. Came straight from a childhood nightmare of his, it did.

Well whatever he calls it, it's a great monster. Has anyone ever statted it up? Aberration type is a gimme, clearly Aquatic, but beyond that I dunno.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Oh gods.
I don't suppose I can just say "That's a very touchy subject," and just leave it at that, can I?
Thunt released the stats on it. Massive controversy ensued. Generally regarded as a pretty nonsensical stat block. Bringing it up again causes pages of arguing. And we just did that, like, two weeks ago. :smallfrown:
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Okay, well I think it's already been stated that Thunt doesn't seem to be a D&D rules expert. All told I can live with this.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Aberration is a given, yeah.
Which makes it really weird that Thunt made him Undead.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Ah, well I can sort of see that as the other possibility. Not quite as good, though, and with excessive mechanical baggage.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Looking at that matchup chart, I almost feel bad for the guys at the bottom. Right up until I remember that it could have easily been avoided.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
I just hope that the green goblin makes it out alive, he doesn't seem too keen on killing dies at least.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Yea, the Big-Ears McGreen sounds like a nicer guy than most. or at least saner.
I hope he gets out ok to, he really doesn't deserve it, as far as I can tell.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
From a narrative standpoint, here are my predictions.
Grem vs. Biscuit
This fight could go either way. Biscuit has only recently been introduced, so it would make sense for him to stick around for awhile. However, Grem has been gone for quite awhile, so it would also make sense that he would win, because why bring him back just to die? Given what I think is going to happen in the following scenario, I think Grem's going to win this.
Saves a Fox vs. Duv
Saves a Fox is going to die. Like, hardcore going to die. Duv is becoming the big threat of the world. She is the White Terror. There's been prophecies that she will come back in a big way. It will also lead to some drama between Duv and Grem if Duv kills Fox. Duv wins.
Dies Horribly vs. Everyone else
Obviously Dies is going to win this one. I think some of them may survive, but Dies is going to hardcore kill them. It makes much more sense as well to keep him around since he is the new chief. The hand's personality might even side with the Viper clan (probably not though). Dies wins.
What do you think will happen?
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Dies isn't the new chief. He refused Dev's offer to make him chief.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
I don't think that each of those three matchups will necessarily end in one side dead. It's not IMPOSSIBLE that they'll ALL survive... but I'm guessing we lose at least one named character here.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
I would say in order of least-to-most danger:
Dies Horribly
Klik
Duv
Biscuit
Grem
Saves a Fox
One of DH's opponents
This is pure speculation however, but I think DH dying after fulfilling his prophecy and having the plot hook about the two souls would possibly be anticlimactic.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Let's see here, I
don't care, hope both die aaaaand don't care.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Well, also, if Dies dies here, it'd sort of be like his entire plotline has been a waste, since it doesn't seem like much has been accomplished yet that would relate back to the other half of the story.
I mean, I assume they have to reconnect somehow. And if Dies dies here, then they're completely severed -- almost nothing would really connect them anymore.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Am I the only one to see the One winged goblin to die? Sure, she wanted civil rights for the goblins but she's evil and have abit hypocrisy in her ideal (keeping goblins and other race as slaves).
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
We all want her to die, but in terms of future plot development, it's very unlikely that she will die.

You all thought Chief was unlikely to die too. How did that turn out for you?:smallwink:
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
I think Klik might die. There will probably be a lot of blood, after all.
-

He can fly, so avoiding it won't be hard if he chooses to. Of course he has something of a history of endangering himself.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
I think saves a fox is going to die. This is a bad matchup. She is using klik as a weapon, and he is very weak against blood. The first time he smacks an injured duv, he will fly off screaming in pain, leaving fox fairly defenseless. Fox's only saving grace is the fact that she took adventurer levels, so she is more than just a random encounter level gobbo.
New prediction. Dies will win, but be permanently partially taken over by his green arm. This is what made the GAP look so shocked when we heard the, "Hey names, remember me?" line. Because dies will look really different, what with half his face being green.
Biscut is likely going to win. The reason for that is, I dont see whats his name joining up with dies and fox and leaving his clan, so his story is mostly over imo. Its not impossible that I am wrong, but I just dont think he will be a big part of the story once this arc is over.
-

Blunt force trauma probably doesn't cause much external bleeding compared to a blade. You can smash bones and organs without messing up the skin holding it together too much.

Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
I'm holding a button on all the vipers perishing, simply so that the storylines can be brought together a bit. Having three plots running concurrently doesn't work so well. It's very easy to lose the thread/interest in a storyline.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
I was going to say that the winners being Grem, Dies, and Fox could wrap up the Viper storyline in a nice little bow. Grem would take over leadership of the Viper clan but not be inclined to continue the plan of World Domination (which required an inspirational mutant albino winged goblin anyway). And while cliche, Fox saying she doesn't give a damn about Duv's professed destiny before clobbering her would be mucho satisfying.

The goblins (presumably including Dies, though I don't know if it's come up in his case) don't refer to Complains-of-Names as "Names"; they call him "Complains". I can think of only one character who abbreviates it as "Names", and what do you know, it's a character who's currently questing in search of an item that teleports people to the location of other people. (And he'll be bringing along someone who's prophecied to be slain by Kore.)

Duv is a complete pillock and frankly almost her entire tribe is too stupid to breathe. Klik doesnt like blood, but there's a reason he's a staff ya know... I'm going with Saves. If somehow Saves dies, then I'm going with Dies destroying Duv for it. (not necessarily by killing her).
Dies wins his match. His arm kills Riss by itself.
Biscuit and Grem- stopped before conclusion by Dies or Biscuits little friend.

Can we just hope a meteor falls on the scene and just kill everybody there? Like, something Chicxulub-meteor sized, just to be sure.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Well we "know" that Dies cant die (or rather both Dies AND his arm) or what the heck would have been the point of the whole thing with him. It would just be a pointless shaggy dog story without the punchline. But Dies *could* possibly die if his arm survives him in some fashion.
Personal prediction- I'm thinking Dies runs amok among the other captive goblins, Riss uses hold person on him, and the arm shows its seperate mind again by killing Riss itself whie the rest of Dies body is held, either by long-range stabbing as its done from time to time, or by taking over Dies' body and breaking/ignoring the hold spell that way, since its a monster and not a person for purposes of the hold spell.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
You realize that Riss isn't the one he's fighting, right?
Not that Riss couldn't become involved... Just that he isn't right now.
By the way, I still don't trust Riss. Something big is going to happen involving that guy, I just know it.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Yes, but he's included in the matchup page so I assume he's involved or will be.
Edit- whoops ok, no he isnt. Thats just a random dumbass Viper, not Riss, so n/m. Damn, there goes a perfectly good theory. :P
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
... No he isn't...
I'm going to assume you're referring to the third Viper goblin. The one who obviously isn't Duv or Grem. The one with the scars going across his eye. That isn't Riss. That isn't even a named character.
Here's a reference. The first panel, there are three Viper goblins. From the left, the first is the unnamed scarface goblin who Dies is going to tear to blood confetti. The one in the middle is Duv. Riss is on the right.
Edit: And... Edit-ninja'd.

I'm wondering if they have some magic effect :smallamused:

Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
My bet is, Dies will murder the crud out of his opponents, Duv will murder the crud out of Fox and Biscuit vs. Grem will end in a draw as Grem sees his mother kill Fox, likely in some brutal fashion, convincing him to join up with Dies and co.
Or, possibly the switchbeast will interupt Biscuit vs. Grem and force them to work together to slay it, but either way I don't see either of them dying.

Yeah I noticed that too, Grem is no match for an 500+ years old orc that can literally kill an entire encounter of goblins in a single attack. That sword might have evened the battlefield, now I'm thinking he's screwed.
At least without Deus ex machina, which I'm betting will save him.
Edit- OK, grem doesn't know how powerful the orc is, but he should be able to see that his camp has been laid to waste and the only non-goblin, dead or alive, is a single orc.

Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
So does the black eyes in goblinoid characters signify any enhancement of combat (like Beserker Rage)? Many goblin character's eye becomes black when they fight.
Hope thunt didn't make Grem look stupid in the battle or Grem's rage overtook his logic.
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
If I remember correctly, it's just an instinctual protection mechanism. An eyelid or some such that protects the eyes when the goblin is in a "fight or flight" situation.
Don't quote me on it, though. :smallwink:
-
Re: Goblins IX: For that, you shall DIE!
Just [Thunt's] artistic convention I should think. It's been the pretty much that way since the beginning and yet noone in-comic has ever noted it.
Maybe ties in with the "through their eyes" but that'd be about it.

Grem can't see Fox or his mother, as they are at the bottom of the cliff right now.

Duv can't fly, she only has one wing.:smallconfused:
If Biscuit knocks him off the edge he'll die, because he hasn't got a Klik to save him.

We've seen her doing a little flight during the battle against the hobgoblins; overland flight is presumably beyond her, but at the very least she can glide and Feather Fall and such. Whether she can gain enough altitude to get back up the cliff I don't know.
Quote:

That would depend on how tall and steep the cliff is, and whether he can grab a ledge or something to catch his fall, and how tough he is to survive the falling damage.
