That was depressing, inspirational, and just all around powerful at the same time. I would even say it IS relevant to what we post about in this thread, because I think this kind of thing reminds us that we can be a little bit better to our fellow man than we are now, and if there's one thing ponies embody I think it's more or less that.
Also it led to me finding this in the same channel, which was none of the above things but made me laugh anyway.

Re: My Little Pony LI: FE
I thought ponies embodied our need to argue endlessly about the canon, popularity and power levels of a cartoon world? :smallyuk:
-
Re: My Little Pony LI: FE
Oh at a certain level it is related to pones. There's some shared methodology and outlook to it.
And yeah that guys channel(s) are pure undiluted win. He even mirrored Pony Note which is also related and awesome.
Hmm those two videos are bizarrely similar in a weird way...

Re: My Little Pony LI: FE
Hmm that got me thinking, isn't Scoots usually the pilot for steampunk stuff and Eberron-style ships?
Seems like the community always wants to give her a way to fly.

That's a funny way to spell "Pinkie Pie"

Silly MCerberus, there isn't a "P" in Rarity.

People get so confused on spellings.
Putting a 'p' in Rarity, honestly!
That sounds so wrong

Re: My Little Pony LI: FE
On Darkness and Ponies:
I think the main thing here is a question of intent and purpose. Namely, what does a story gain by its setting?
Yes, you could tell a non-horror story in the Lovecraft universe. No law that says you can't. But if you've done that, then why on earth are you in the Lovecraft universe in the first place? I can see it working as maybe a parody, or used to some sort of comedic effect, and that would be fine. But if you're telling a romantic comedy in the Lovecraft world, just because you want to, then your setting is doing you no favors at all. Can you write a good story like that? Sure, it's been done. But your story will naturally be under-utilizing the resources that are available to it. If it were set somewhere that supported the story, or if the setting was used to cleverly add depth to your characters and themes, then it might just be a great story. And that's not to mention the fact that running a story against the grain of the universe stands a much higher risk of making something that feels out-of-place. This rings especially true with ponies, because for a lot of people, it was the genuine nature of the universe that drew them in. In spite of the danger, in spite of catastrophe, there's always that thought that friendship can ultimately solve their problems.
(That isn't to say the story can't be great otherwise, it'll just be a lot harder to pull off, and a lot of folks will have this nagging feeling that something's not quite right with the universe.)
That isn't to say death and other tragedies don't belong in the ponyverse. Far from it. It's just viewed through that lens of "Friendship is Magic". I'd just say that you'd want to make sure that being in the ponyverse is the right thing for your story, and if it is, to make sure that your darkness is viewed in-universe properly.

Rarity is second best pony, we were discussing best pony: Pinkie Pie
This is the brony version of "I'm not your friend buddy" isn't it?

Given how often I see most of you post, I have to wonder just how you can all get the name Luna wrong.
It's four letters! How hard is that to spell?

Because as Deadly said, she's just beyond the show, not like the others but, just above it, a special case.
But I mean, writing "Rainbow Dash" is maybe harder than the others, but c'mon! it' isn't that hard!

Come on, man, Lanu is a tough name to spell. Don't even get me started on her sister Cletseia.

90% more humor with the addition of your signature.

Re: My Little Pony LI: FE
Clearly we need to implement a system where each pony gets a week of being best pony before passing it off to the next one.
Either that, or have it based off of something completely random, like a weekly game of candyland.

Really? Is it really so hard to spell "Rainbow Dash?"

A game of ponyland you say? I approve.
Also, could some pony explain the rise of Slenderman in popularity recently? The Slenderman Mythos has been around for years now, why did it just suddenly start showing up in memes?

I'll give you a pass on mangling Rainbow Dash, because your signature leads me to believe it was an intentional, comic slip up.

Pfff. Pinkie Pie can't be best pony AND an else itch horror from
Beyond the stars. And no amount of g3.5 will convince me
Otherwise. That monstrosity is NOT a pony.

I know right? I've been waiting for this moment since I first met him. He has given me remarkably few shots at using it though.

maybe, but it's really a sort of quantum thing.
All ponies are best pony at once, an picking a single one is just turning your eyes to a single facet of what "best pone" truly is, like picking a single virtue and declaring it Virtue itself.
Besides, candy land is so rigged in Pinkamena's favor.

Ehh, it's kinda become more spread out, so no surprise that you bumped into it now. It was interesting....last october, perhapes. But this is a pony thread, and so I will use a pony to show my views on it.

Well, then it'd just become a fight over who gets to be best pony first.
People would nominate, vote, we'd never figure it out since there'd be so many conflicting opinions.

Why can't it be determined either randomly or through an unbiased party? Most likely the former, though. Heck, couldn't you use dice and let luck decide?

I would love to have a long debate about the nature of truth and lies, but unfortunately I don't have the time. However, to understand my perspective, if you haven't already I suggest that you read "The Science of Discworld II: The Globe" by Terry Pratchett, Ian Stewart, and Jack Cohen. It contains some wonderful essays on the nature of truth, and why lieing is not a bad thing and is actually quite vital to human development. Go. Read. Contemplate. Then we can talk (assuming I have the time).

The colour "red" refers to a certain spectrum of light, which has a specific wave length, which can be detected. Even red/rlue blind people can do that, even if it's a bit elaborate.
"Red" is a lie. There is no such thing as "red". "Light in the wavelength 630-700 nm range, as interpreted by the majority of the human visual cortex" is a slightly more accurate representation, to which we commonly apply the label "red" (one of those commonly accepted lies that we call truth, which I was talking about earlier).
Yes, the wavelength can be detected, but how it is interpreted by the observer is the lie. For example, dogs don't see 630-700 nm light waves as red, they see them as what humans call green. If one points to an object and calls it read, and another calls the same object green, who is telling the truth?

I propose assigning each pony to a number, then using this. That'll be the pony of the week.
