Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
Hi there! I'm yet another lurker that just had to register in order to go
!!!! HOLY CRAP YAY GO DURKON BOOM!!!!!!!
I was too busy squee-ing last night to have a coherent response. AWESOME. Just freaking awesome.
My take on V's smile: Yeah, I think s/he had figured out the sonic effect that was coming, but more importantly: the uberstorm means that Durkon's back in the game, and about to dish out an ass-whuppin'.
I think the "control" part of "control weather" wasn't so much a specific "I'd like a lightning bolt of X size, over here, that can do Y damage" as it was "I want a massive sonic boom right here, pinpointed on those trees." And this isn't a normal Control Weather with the massive amount of divine influence he's got working for him here. Asking THOR to use THUNDER to DESTROY THINGS? Yeah. I can just imagine Thor going "Buckle up, kids, we're gonna have some fun."
But then, I'm also a big believer in DMs going, "Okay, that works because it is far too freaking cool not to."
And Miss'ssippi is clearly where Vin Diesel is from.

Boobs and Boom, what could be greater?

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
Proof that weather based spells don't suck, and clerics are more than healbots, i just kind of wonder how durkon knew they were vulnerable to sonic, since he had already run away screaming, or maybe he guessed.
Anyway, I loved the comic YAY!

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
Someone stated it before that it might be why Varasuvius was shouting SONIC! at the top his/her lungs, when s/he had not actually memorized the spell.
I really like the fact that the spellcasters say the name of the spell as the audible component. <chuckle> It reminds me of boffer combat with the wizards running around a field screaming "Fireball! Fireball!".

Or, the ever famous "Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!"

And I want to know whether V was dazed and confused right before the thunder got there or if he/she knew what was going on. He/she didn't look to happy when it hit, but I guess that is common among people taking sonic damage.
Oh, V knew all right: unlike Leeky, V had the good sense to cover the ears before the sonic boom hit, hopefully Spoiler

preventing deafness. If Leeky suffers deafness from the thunder, he'll have to make checks to cast spells with verbal components, putting him at a disadvantage in the finale.

I appologize for the above, but I could not properly type a response from my position on the floor laughing hysterically. and this strip is precisely why you worship a thunder god.

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
That...... was awesome.........
Julia was pretty funny, and revealing (about her character) and Durkon, well he showed us just how much he hates trees/has Thor's favor/is awesome.......
My mind is blown......

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
That was very funny. ;D
VG Cats did a similar joke with boobs recently (not that I'm saying Rich stole it; they were both equally funny).

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
This was an absolutely awesome strip! I love Durkon's eyes, V's smile, and the way Rich pulled an amazing rabbit out of his hat to save the day!

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
That kind of thing is what makes DnD great, when a player finds a great way to utilize something that just happens to save the entire party, and this strip captures that spirt great. One of the best yet!
Of course I'm not bias just 'cause I play a dwarven cleric here >__>

This comic has made my day. That is the best use logic I've ever heard of. That was awesome.

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
not to be a downer, but every 5 sec is 1 mile, or 3 sec every km for you metric people.
durkon counted to four and leakey predicted four miles, so leakey was off by alot.

Not to nit pick, but after the flash of light, there was a pause where Leeky comments on how far the lightning was and how his trees are safe, and then the teen goes "Did you see that?" during which, Durkon may have counted silently to himself up to 15. You see, after 10 Mississipis, your Mississipis get a bit longer then 1 second because of the additional syllable. He may have only verbalized the last 5 seconds, counting the first 10 to himself, then counting an additional 5 mississipis outloud to talk over Julia's loud mouth...that would have made it 15 seconds or 3 miles.
Just a thought

Not from where I come from. It might be 5 secs to a mile where you live, but I've always known it as 1 "mississippi" per mile.

Oh :) I know about "Mississippi" being a counting word. But, uh, like, how does a Dwarf in OOTS-land know Mississippi? Hee hee!

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
Clerics FTW!!! Great comic! Really enjoying the whole Cliffport escapade.

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
I liked the boobs part, but my favorite was the "two mississippi, three mississippi, four mississippi".

1 sec/mile is something that lots of poeple just say because its a cultural thing. The truth is somwhere closer to 4 sec/mile.

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
My favorite panel, aside from the BOOM!, was the middle panel where Durkon stops chanting and opens his eyes.
Yes, that's right, you tawdry little tart ... the pupil-less, milky-white goodness of TOTAL DIVINE POWER!!
Go Team Cleric!! :D

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
Wow, I just love how all the rules lawyers and physics majors get fired up by about page 11.
BTW absolutely awesome, one of the best strips yet

Re: OOTS #352 - The Discussion Thread
It is 1 mississippi per mile....if it takes you 4 seconds to say the word "Mississippi" :)
Sound travels .211 miles per second or around 1.055 miles in 5 seconds at sea level.
And I agree. Durkon kicks @SS! Love the strip. But that's only Leeky that has been temporarily diverted, and as Leeky mentioned a few strips ago, he has special abilities more powerful then Haley's entire class. Trees are dispatched but Leeky may have tricks up his short gnomish sleeves. A kobold, an animal companion, a novice wizard and a lesser fiend have 3 of the other 12-13 level OOTS characters on the defensive. (Which is sad when you think about it.) Or Nale truely is an evil genious, able to route 3 mid-upper level characters with low-level opponents.
