I also thought that “Thog’s puppy” revealed a very disturbing side about Thog.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to some recruitment scenes. The thing with recruiting EVIL adventures is that you have to make sure that they aren’t more backstabbing than you are. Or they might fool some good/neutral people and dump/kill them afterwards.
On the contrary, he obviously *would* make a good puppy-daddy... The 'puppy' is still alive after all, which would be unlikely if it had been left to him to merely keep a blacksmith quiet...Quote:

Actually, I think what you're pointing out here is part of "The Evil Villian Syndrome" syndrome. The phrase "A quick death is too good for you! Bwah-ha-ha!" comes quickly to mind.Quote:

On the other hand....
There should have been a bad guy girl who falls in love with a good guy guy, realizes the error of her ways, and helps the good guys escape the clutches. Durkon's beau did the falling part (maybe not falling in love, but at least falling in lust.) But she neglected the rest of the formula. So, it might just be possible that this story is NOT a true evil villian scenario, but something completly different....
Could it be...
An original narrative that uses the devices but isn't a slave to them?
Hmmmm..... I get uncomfortable when things aren't predictable. But it's a good discomfort.
What classes have yet to see:
Maybe Nale finds a Warlock (they can be evil). That would a dangerous foe I think. I don't think you can counterspell their Fel blast?
Let me see: Psionic characters maybe...
Druid (evil Druid) would be a good way to show the evil's of nature.
So i'm wondering if the Linear Guild will find members like the Order of new chars that are evil.
I don't think a psionicist could concentrate through one of Elan's songs. Especially the concentration song. shudder
Remember that is not enough for them to be evil, they must be fun, too.Quote:

What I meant was is that Thog is clearly of some Evil alignment at this point, and thus cannot be a Good aligned puppy daddy.Quote:

Sure, I can see that. But I think I may have buried my point a bit.Quote:

If Thog's predilection for confusing people (dwarves, specifically?) for pets were mentioned earlier in the strip, I would have thought "Hey, Thog's not the basically-innocent-oaf-in-the-wrong-crowd I took him for; he's just as evil as the succubus." And there would still have been room for a laugh in the last panel.
So, in short, I'm not disturbed by the imagery's *inclusion* in the strip, but by its appearance in the panel where we've gotten accustomed to seeing something funny.

Well, you're certainly entitled to be disappointed, but I would point out that OOTS has been "unfunny" in the last panel before, most notably when Nale ran Elan through with a longsword. Yes, it is a humor strip, but I am also telling a story with some dramatic elements. This strip was designed to underscore that the Linear Guild, while funny, is a real and scary threat to the OOTSers, not comedic buffoon villains. I'm sure some people got a dark chuckle out of the last panel anyway.
Fair enough.Quote:

I wasn't really surprised or shocked by the last panel largely, I think, because I never bought into the idea that Thog was just an incredibly stupid innocent in bad company. Frankly, I think Thog is just too dumb to fully appreciate the horror he's been inflicting on that poor blacksmith, just as I don't think he even noticed the sylph, he just whacked anything that he came across that wasn't Roy. It doesn't excuse him, but like someone pointed out earlier, Thog has the mind of a child, but the kind of child that pulls wings of off flies and beats up other children on the playground.
Whether or not Thog is evil or just plain dumb is one of the questions like V's gender, IMHO. With the possible exception of Hilgya, every other member of the Linear Guild is evil to their absoulte core, yet Thog remains a matter of debate. We can see instances of him acting in ways that can be viewed as either evil or dumb, and thus a point of speculation.
Also, could it be that Thog is evil because he's dumb? This is surely the case with Belkar, since when V buffed his wisdom, he became a pacifist, and then went right back to a 3 foot tall sadistic fiend once V dismissed the spell.
I suspect Nale planned a lot more carefully than that. He wanted all the sylphs dead, and the only one who survived was turned to stone temporarily.Quote:

Yeah, even Roy, who is a pure figther, used it at least one time more than Thog. (" You...broke... my...SWORD!!!")Quote:

Chalk me up as one of those people who roared with laughter at the Thog puppy panel. I fully agree with Stephen Leacock's assessment that laughter is often based on the sentiment, "Thank God that's not me."
I've also found that laughing at my own pain has been very helpful any time I can manage it. It's not about being cruel so much as it is about recognizing that cruelty and pain are part of the human condition. We're not enjoying the suffering when we laugh, believe it or not. It's just that comedy like this keeps me (and probably others) from closing our eyes to what's out there without tuning it out as "statistics" or responding to it in a more rash manner.
I believe the Giant did just fine with this strip, though I'm glad he got the response he did from you. I do not care for hurtful humour (says the admitted hypocrite, who sometimes overvalues cleverness), but uncomfortable humour is another matter.
This one is funny! And it's up like an hour early.
I like the horse names. Whisper and Silver are good names for horses.
Midday snack is an even better one :p
this is cliche, but
Hi Ho Silver! AWAY!
And there was me going to say "Hi, Ho, Midday Snack; Away
;D
I wonder if one of those spears is small enough for Roy to wield (with both hands, of course).
Of course, Silver had a white mane and tail, not black. I know because I spent most of my free time this weekend watching old Lone Ranger episodes. ;D
Oh, right, Is Roy going on this quest weaponless? And what happened to the sword Elan offered him after Xykon's defeat? I don't remember seeing it with the other magical items.Quote:
